@@fnonaka Yes, you are correct! This was the final release from the SY Series and for the SY85; Yamaha ditched the FM-engine and users were able to create sounds relying on 6MB of ROM. Single waveforms/samples (in voice mode) could be modulated using its digital filters (with resonance), various ADSR settings and 90 different stereo effects that are similar but not equivalent to those of an SPX900 multi fx processor. The EX5 (three years prior to the release of the first Motif) comes with a bundle of great types of synthesis, but also had a good - more developed - AWM2 engine as well. Both the SY35 and SY85 for example have the 'fat' strings that were very useful for the techno music that was very popular at that time. I do want to add that both really have their own character and I love them both. Who knows, I might make a video with the SY35 sometime soon.

I have it but nowadays almost only use it as master MIDI keyboard. I recently discovered its keyboard only has velocities up to around 100, it's almost impossible to get more than 104. And it's kind of by design....
@devingademanАй бұрын
This is just from memory without sitting behind my SY85, but I believe in utility mode you can choose how sensitive you want the velocity (curves) of the device to be as well as having the option to set it on a fixed velocity between 0 and 127. There is however indeed a claim that there seems to be an inherent velocity "fault" in the DX and SY keyboards making them never reach their full velocity potential. The SY85 as a master MIDI keyboard is an excellent choice since FS-keybeds have one of the nicest toucher. A common problem to be aware of is that keys can become 'sticky' over time, although this isn't too difficult to solve. Having problems over time with velocity is also quite common. I for example have a rather 'soft' response when playing my Korg M1 (quality synths from both Yamaha and Korg came with FS-keybeds during this era). When playing a few patches I always have to 'push' the velocity a little bit or else some sounds will come across as rather dull. I have to open the thing up sometime soon. If you feel like you're having to work too hard to get expressiveness out of your keys, you might want to consider to have a look at some of the online forums addressing these issues and what could be a way to solve them. Apart from never looking forward to unscrew all the boards, it shouldn't be too much of a deal. I hope this helps a little bit. Thank you for your comment! -DG
@mabian69Ай бұрын
@@devingademan I have other controllers so this velocity thing is not a relevant issue to me nowadays - ad it wasn't in the past when I didn't even know it existed. I just find surprising that there is this such a "issue" and I had to compare with another controller to realize how the difference of the (topmost) 20 velocity values is so significant. I can also get away with some input MIDI plugins that extend the range, of course there are still around 100 values but doing so these values are evenly spread between 1 and 127 :)

Thank you! Yes, it’s a great patch. Slightly overshadowed by some of the more well known M1 presets that everyone will recognize. I like it when those digital artefacts sorta ‘play up’ the more you drift away from the main source sample, often times spread out all over the keys and sometimes split up in maybe 3/4(?) samples (as with the famous M1 piano patch). Pad sounds from this era are also really useful when arranging/composing. I plan to do more videos like these.

@devingademan2 ай бұрын
Hey Nicolas, I think this answer will be of help: as the factory patterns were only stored in RAM and not ROM, unless you did a sysex or cassette tape dump of them, the only way to the factory patterns back in the RX11 is by doing it manually (talking about old skool!). When released in 1984, there was a 'pattern book' for the RX11/RX15 where you'll find the original patterns. I think the best alternative is finding a sysex file on - maybe Yamaha? - forums that would include the original factory patterns. My sysex file (dating from 2020) consists of user patterns done by previous owners throughout its 40 years of existence and currenlty, my unit is filled with some of my own made patterns as well. So hopefully there's a sysex file out there with the original patterns on the web. I will go through some forums to see if I can find one and be to sure to let you know :D PS: I was glad to find out that some of your best videos were back on KZbin again! As it should, since your channel is a cornerstone for the synth community thanks to your excellent content, devotion and last but not least; your fantastic style of playing!
