Wonderful! I grew up near here as a kid and often wondered about the old railway in this area. This is very interesting, thanks for this. I lived on wainman street which was very close to an old railway road bridge and i went to the school there. I beleive its the same line that was next us that you have explored. Thanks again 😊

Like the video i remember when mr marvels theme park opened back in 84 i was in my late teens . It was a great park in its day and the chairlifts were always great fun . Its a shame to the park closed in 2002 and been left abandoned for 22 years now

In the seventies it was Scarborough zoo and marineland with dolphin shows I can just remember it I was very young. I do remember theme park it had its own rides and old ones including the live size dinosaurs statues from the earlier attraction .like the open air swimming pool down on the bottom road and tree walk wonderland at peasholm park and sadly Mr Marvels all sadly gone 😢

I remember them lifting the tracks when I was a kid. We used to bmx on the old airfield at Broomhill on the small slag mounds that were on to stop vehicles, and when they lifted the tracks to the marshalling yard it was fantastic on there for the bikes too ! Vaguely remember cycling on Broomhill road too before they closed it

Brilliant video John. Remember much of the route from the 70s/80s and have cycled on it loads of times since. But your video is still bringing out new and interesting stuff. Always struck by the power of nature to reclaim her own. No one would ever know, looking at today’s scene, the scale of industry that used to be there. Keep up the good work.

You are correct , the canal bridge had a metal span and a stone section with a horse tunnel on the tow path , the viaduct over the dove was a mini swaith but built from stone with three stone piers , and near the junction was a stone bridge identical to convicts tunnel but without the concrete bridge on top , it was a low stone bridge with the embankment going over the top as convicts would have been originally , it crossed the aldam mill goyt ( South Yorkshire railway cost cutting ) they were notoriously tight with money and wouldn’t pay for a full height stone bridge .

I used to play on the disused aldam curve as a kid , a class 47 with HAA’s derailed just after ash inn bridge , it was heading for wombwell main junction , the track was the old type with wooden noggins in the chairs which locals took for fire wood so the rails spread under the 47 , it hadn’t been used for years before that ,the track was lifted in 76 and the bridges cut up at the same time , my bedroom window overlooked the junction of aldam curve and worsboro branch so could watch the 76 electrics to as far as swaith viaduct and 20 31 37 45 47 56 diesels going up to Barrow pit .

The Brick cut out that New oaks box sat in is still there , it is adjacent to the TPT on the edge of the concreted area , it has been extended by the brick works at some point , never saw new oaks box as it was just a pile of ashes and metal in the cut out when I first saw the area In about 75 .

If you had told me in the mid 1970s that Butlins at Filey would soon be closed and Primrose Valley caravan site would replace it I would have thought you were mad. It's incredible the pace of change. Butlins as late as the mid 1970s was seen as the more selective type of holiday yet it was to die out completely with the arrival of cheap flights to foreign destinations.
