Hi, I hope you will still see this comment…. I am a junior undergrad psych student and I plan on applying this summer. Is that the best way to do it? I know multiple schools are rolling deadlines and they encourage you to get it all turned in ASAP. However this scares me… I feel like I won’t be ready to submit everything as soon as applications open but I also don’t want to wait and be overlooked. Can you please give me any advice you have on the timeline of OTCAS/applying process?

This was such a helpful video! I have a question on the shadowing hours part. I’ve been under a PT for a while with over 400 hours. I have realized that I may actually be interested in OT instead. Can I use that to my advantage for OT school?

I'm taking massage therapy. I graduate in November 2023. I want to advance my education. I want to put one base on the demand for jobs. Whichever one will have more jobs available. I'm into natural health,yoga and exercise. Which one would you think would be better for someone like ? I also don't want to do a lot of schooling

Dear Crista, A few years ago, OT caught my attention. As a parent of an autistic child, I am aware of my son's daily struggles. I decided to return to school, and I recently received my Associated degree. I'll start working on my bachelor's degree in January. What suggestions or pointers can you provide someone like myself. Who wants to begin OT school. Do you have any suggestions for books to start reading/studying? I appreciate your time. Vee

D’Youville College in Buffalo ny accepts you into their 5 or 6 year MS or OTD program as a freshman in college ( right out of High school). You actually start learning OT theory and practice year 1. I honestly don’t understand why other schools expect you to get a 4 year BS degree, then apply to a 3 year graduate school that you may not even get into. D’YOUVILLE COLLEGE - highly recommended

To anyone watching, this is typical millennial nonsense, this mindset will have you crying to the government for help because you cannot breathe. do not go into 100k+ debt for OT school. I went to cota school on the cheap and then finished a bridge program while working and cash flowing my masters. Never took a penny in loans, didn’t even fill out the fafsa forms. With interest it can take the average borrower decades to dig out of this kind of debts. Go to as cheap a school as possible. The cheapest accredited OT program is the best OT program. Don’t live on campus, apply for every scholarship etc. Absolutely not a single employer is looking at where you went to school. My full OT bridge program cost around $80k (I made around $80k a year as a cota)

Is it possible to get a job as a COTA without any SNF experience. I did all my fieldwork in pediatric, mental health and orthopedic outpatient/hand management. I begged to do fieldwork in a SNF but it was not offered. How should I go about trying to do this?

I think it's important to realize that you do not need to go into substantial amount of debt for this career. The cost of one semester of her program is over half of the cost of my in-state 2.5 year MSOT program that is also a top 20 school, is extremely reputable and established. Just because you're not alone with your massive amount of debt does not mean that you should be fine to take it all on - avoid it as much as you can. In the video, she says she would do it all over again to become an OT, but she was still a student when she said that. I would really love to know if this still stands now that she's graduated and working. No shade at all, really just trying to give some info to hopeful students!

I am also thinking of OT school. I am torn between MSOT or OTD?? Although MSOT is shorter, I have read that they are transitioning out of MSOT and into OTD now. Any thoughts?
@oranjjetofu4054

@@kathywolfe1641 The OTD mandate has failed MULTIPLE times in large part due to the backlash from the OT community themselves saying that there is no reason for this career to be a doctorate degree and it is not in effect and has no plans to be. They're trying to keep up with PT but many PTs will tell you something similar, that the doctorate is not worth it. The rising cost of the degrees with no increase in pay is enough for the doctorate to not be worth it. If you earn a Master's and in however many years they eventually turn it into an OTD degree, you will be grandfathered in. This degree used to be a Bachelor's degree and some of the best, most knowledgeable OTs I've shadowed have that as their highest degree level since they have a substantial amount of work experience, they were all grandfathered in and haven't needed to go back to school. Choosing the right school for you is not a super simple decision, it's largely about finding what is the best program for you (curriculum, your budget, reputation in the community, etc) but a Master's program is a perfectly great option. If anything you'll be out of school faster and able to start working sooner!

@@kathywolfe1641 I'm glad!! it's important to know that if you ever decide that you want to get an OTD for whatever reason, you can enroll in a post-professional OTD program or a PhD program any number of years into your career when you have more of an idea of what really strikes your interest. Many practitioners find their passion well into their careers!
