BS. The model 90 and Model 95s have replaceable processor complexes from the 386, through the 486 and into the Pentium era. Also Cyrex made a 486 upgrade for the Model 70. It might also work on the 50, 65, P70, and 80 though I haven’t checked

IBM lost the clone wars then, it was a different world for IBM by the 1990s, they were up against huge competition, so of course they allowed replacement then. But back in 1986, IBM were still king of the hill, they could do whatever they wanted and generally get away with it. They pulled this sort of stuff a lot in all sorts of their equipment

Nice video, thank you! I noticed your frustration with those dialog boxes closing when you click OK. That was (still is) a Windows convention - clicking OK in a dialog box must apply changes AND close it. Windows users would think something has gone horribly wrong if it didn't close. That's how/why the "Apply" button came into existence, which applies changes but keeps the dialog box open. It featured heavily in Windows 95 onwards, and also brought about the OCD behavior of religiously clicking Apply then OK to close a dialog box, even though clicking OK implicitly applies changes anyway 😅. But wait, what happens if you click Apply then Cancel? 😭

They deliberately prevented upgrades so their good name wouldn't be destroyed by hacks who would make the system unstable. Overclocking wasn't a thing yet. They may have had alterior motives. But IBM computers were the most stable and excellent computers available. My friend's dad bought an IBM PC with an Epson FX -80 printer. I had a Commodore 64 at the time. I visited this friend nearly every afternoon and it didn't take me long to read the entire MS-DOS manual. While my friend was playing Flight Simulator 1.0, I would read the DOS manuals. His dad became upset to find that I had learned how to control the computer but his son had not. Lol. The IBM PC was a feat of engineering, stable and reliable. The software was rock solid and so was the hardware. Later I purchased an IBM PC Convertible, a laptop with an LCD monochrome display. It was awesome. Only when clones became commonplace did I experience hardware problems.

I preferred the Phoenix BIOS in some cases . Keep in mind the programs are not very complicated and can be modified once you know the algorithms for systems integrity check ( checksums and code words and phrases ) at each level even into operating system . Microsoft did not want its IBM compatible operating system to run on just anything and several manufacturers got together to keep Commodore machines from being able to run software and hardware compatible with the inflexable behemoths Apple and IBM at the same time , Commodore would have won the war if it could have survived the lawfare that IBM and Apple used money not merrit to corrupt the legal system . There we also " wars " between IO device manufacturers on mass storage , memory expansions , busses , protocalls , networking and still going on in video devices . There are now a diverse set of options when it comes to computer features there could have been more had not litigation kept hidden the facts that the " emperors had no clothes " . Big tyranny hates small flexible diversity causing unpredictable futures but innovation is way behind on what is good computer engineering because of the narrow channels that the tyrants imposed to keep their hegemonies .

This was something IBM came out with later, after the first round of ATs, which did not have this lock in the BIOS. I doubt IBM ever said why they did this, but there are numerous reasons one could think of, any or all which could be true. I assume the XT 286 was locked down too, based on its late release in the PC cycle, before MicroChannel.

Very few games were written for PC back in the early 80's because a PC costs more than a car back then (if you include the RAM and video upgrades required for any type of game would require)

Not so. There were plenty of games. Many text based like Zork and other adventure games. And lots of boot games like Microsoft Olympics and copies of most arcade games like Space Invaders, Asteroids, and so on.

Well, i'm also from the 0.99 kernel age. compiling the complete linux system yourself. Arch is meant for the people that wants full controll over there system and are willing to put some effort in it. Nothing wrong with that.. I personally not using Arch, but i can understand why people would like Arch.. But about this video.. Arch Linux Suck... Except for the installation guide i see absolutely nothing viable why Arch should suck? What i understand from Arch if it's up and running it seems to be a very nice system. This title should be called "I'm lazy and do not want to put effort in Arch Linux" Instead of claiming that it sucks. Because you really do not know if it sucks, because you never tried it.

That *was* graphics capability for the 5150 .. "Graphics" according to IBM is a 4 color bar chart (compared to their mainframe block text terminals). That's probably why the Wikipedia chart shows the Atari 400/800 in the lead for home PCs at that time.
@gemedetvideo8 күн бұрын
The 5150 was originally available with a choice of either a MDA card or a CGA card. The MDA card was pure text-based and had no graphic capability outside of using characters. The CGA card was capable of full bitmap graphics but cost significantly more and required a CGA monitor which was also quite expensive at the time. Also the text output by the MDA card was a higher resolution than the CGA card could do so while the graphics capability of the CGA card was nice for games, the MDA card was a much better choice for most business and productivity applications.
@johnathanstevens84368 күн бұрын
@gemedetvideo Yes, I remember it well. That's how the Atari 8-bits, TI, Apple, Commodore VIC20 were still able to compete .. for a little while anyway. I think the C64 came out the next year.

There used to be a DOS utility called "MOSLO" that was supposed to slow down your PC for the purpose of playing 8088 class games. Never tried it myself, but it was kind of popular in the 90s. But then again, you have probably come across it by now and it probably isn't effective enough for cycle dependent games.

I miss the days they all actually competed with wild hardware... do enjoy seeing the videos of the old stuff though! Cheers!

Best thing z80 had was it alternate registers ie dual registers was great for interupts so you did not have to push your registers to the stack you just used the alternate register so one instruction and bang service your interrupt and just swap em back before you leave. Tv
