This video deserves attention. Too few people are talking about this issue which just keeps getting worse.

Hearing about the internet reminds me abou something a professor said in my history class. The professor talked about how at first people were saying it would lead to a freer society with individuals becoming more enlightened. While some people used their new access to mass printing to learn more and broaden their horizons, most people would read texts that were already conforming to their views. He talked about how the printing press when paired with the Reformation led to more fanatical and violent religious wars in Europe that dwarfed anything before (proportionally the 30 Years War is Europe's largest). Additionally, using the mass communication of the printing press led to more propaganda from governments. It also allowed them to more easily standardize rules & policies to establish larger state bureaucracies, leading to the absolutist monarchies or centralized parliamentary governments. His argument was that in some ways the printing press made people freer and shopped ideas around more easily, but it also led to a more centralized society. The professor highlighted how with the internet people were saying the same things about freedom and society, but he guaranteed that in time things would centralize around key players. Haunting & accurate prediction.

wow Sir Berners-Lee is not wrong. The internet has gone astray and I honestly don't know if it is even possible to fix it. Mega commercialism controls it now. I remember the fun of connecting to the early public internet in 1992 or 1993 at my office headquarters. Our desktops had to have a public IP address in order to connect. Such bad security back then, not even a firewall. haha

Imagine if Lee built on an off switch 😆

I mostly agree with Sir Berners-Lee description of the problem, but I am sceptical of the solution he describe. I do not think use of government power is the solution, and even less the UN. I have lost my trust in UN as an institution. The data collection done by Facebook and profiling done by Cambridge Analytica now seems like child play compared to the cooperation between big business and government we have seen since. The cure has been worse than the disease, and we have only gotten sicker.

Pop-ups are becoming a bloody nuisance.

The problem is a lot bigger than popups though! The issue of decentralization is a major one. The internet was supposed to be a melting pot of multiple sites, not a place for 4 businesses: Facebook, google, Microsoft, and Twitter that control the narrative for the way we live our modern lives
