Great talk/lesson. Sort of proves that often the best teachers are the ones that have been through the crap rather than the ones that had just done it right from the start, if that makes any sense. I heard once somewhere that Bach was a terrible teacher, because it (music/composition I dunno) was all so obvious to him he couldn't understand how anyone couldn't get it, so he was impatient and couldn't explain stuff haha. Sounds like you're from the north of England somewhere, the place I feel the most at home. Unfortunately I'm a long way from there and walk around upside down atm . haha Thanks and kind regards

This is one of the MOST important advices I could ever receive! I really couldn't believe how agile my voice became when I finally tried to sing with less volume. Runs are a lot easier this way and it actually sounds more like singing with passion - I really had to ignore the fact that this advice sounded counterintuitive for me in the first place. It is definitely worth a try for everyone who tends to put too much power and pressure into his voice like I did.

Your video's are clear, concise and your methodology of teaching removed so much of the confusion that some other channels had left me with. It's like now - I finally understand what they were all TRYING to say - but their information always left me with a big weakness in my singing while I focused on such specific aspects of my sound (tension, lack of intensity, silly amounts of nasality, squeezing like mad etc). I have been way too good at pulling my chest up to notes higher than my bridge and managing an excess of tension to squeeze out these notes with distortion etc, to realise now that that's WHY I don't like my singing. Past couple days I applied your methodology as best I could and got amazing results today. Effortless range but power and resonation with it, sooooo much less tension and so much more freedom. Better and more intimate singing when I want to (always SUCKED at that), more or less air in the tone when I want to, more or less nasality (but I still have a lot of that when I go for high notes beyond C5). Anyway, I can't thank you enough for your videos man. It feels like you don't hold any information back from us and genuinely just want us to discover what you did to become better singers. Cheers! <3

This is awesome. If I had written the most ideal response I’d like to receive on my new KZbin channel, it probably wouldn’t have been as good as this. It really does make my day, honestly, coz I just really hope it makes sense to people. Yeah, I am so keen to see people improve and take on these things and try to understand it all. There are so many pieces to the puzzle. It’s very confusing, sometimes contradictory, and plain weird to get our heads round this stuff at times. The absolute best of luck with your singing; this summer I’ll be able to put a lot more content up and some other courses and things I’ve been wanting to create. I hope it continues to help… all the best

@@singingmatterscalder Thanks so much man! Another sick practice today. So happy with my range now. I hit a D#5 today and it sounded 'pretty', not like a squeezed out siren, nor did it have to be weak. I can slip up into old school rock-like wails really easily from there and it'll take some practice to master, but it feels so good. Yeah, I think everyone's journey is going to be completely different, you seem to have in mind two majorly different approaches to singing, for those who sing too soft, and for those who sing to hard, and I was always both of these at the same time! If I wanted power I was pushing and squeezing too much. If I wanted to be intimate I would flip far too easily into an unsupported falsetto I couldn't get back from, and no amount of crying, lowering/raising the larynx, or diaphragmatic control was helping me solve it but your approach in just a few vids has really guided me into the 'middle ground' I've been searching for, where it all seems to come together. Legend! I hope your channel gets the support it deserves in the near future. I'm sure it will! I will recommend you to any friend interesting in learning to sing. Cheers.

Do you find lip trills any good?
@singingmatterscalder
@singingmatterscalder 15 күн бұрын
Absolutely! They are a great warm up, used by singers from all walks of life. Tree can tell you a lot about how your voice is functioning, including breath control and support, but resonance as well. But it’s the ‘semi-occluded vocal tract’ element of lip trills and other such like exercises that gives the vocal cords a little bit of air pressure from above them as well as below that they really like! it’s a great warmup used by all sorts of people… seems like some weird load of nonsense but it’s actually really really useful

Here's a question: I tend to have any easier time singing strong and on pitch towards the top of my range (say, C#4-G4), but as soon as it gets a little lower and less "intense" things tend to sound really "weak" and I have a much harder time with pitch. I tend to go flat slightly on those mid-rangy notes, and my higher notes are often closer to pitch. Any thoughts would be great!
@josephharvey1762
@josephharvey1762 17 күн бұрын
Here's a question - obviously at some point you are going to run out of range and it's going to feel "hard" to hit something. How do you know what the top of your range actually is? If it keeps feeling free and easy as you go up, you'd think there would never be a limit, but obviously there is.
@singingmatterscalder
@singingmatterscalder 17 күн бұрын
Yeah there is a limit and you can tell the cords are stretched to their maximum and you are allowing the voice to go right up into head … you can tell it’s reaching its peak and there aren’t really any notes accessible but you’re not straining for it still!
@josephharvey1762

What I'd love to hear is how to sing with expression and even grit while feeling relaxed. When I focus on feeling no tension at all, my voice tends to sound weak and expressionless.
@singingmatterscalder
@singingmatterscalder 17 күн бұрын
Good! Ha ha. If that means you’ve removed any tension then great! First things first. Singing comfortably , always good! So it’s about bringing those textures in in a comfortable way … you could try two three or more levels of intensity . Sing one note , very light, light , medium, then compressed. Try to bring in a stronger core closure gradually! Get used to the different levels available to you, making sure to sing all without strain. Try that sort of thing. Take one word or phrase and sing it incrementally more compressed . Experiment with that a lot . Within one line you can then choose to create dynamic between the words and not sing everything exactly the same .

Very similar principle. They are both ‘semi-occluded vocal tract exercises’. They create a little bit of back pressure with the air, as it’s being restricted from escaping, it’s kind of building a little air pressure in the mouth so the cords get a air pressure above and below .

I've said it before, and I'm going to say it again because I appreciate it. You are so considerate with helping us understand what's going on with the voice and great at thoroughly explaining it. I've watched a lot of music teachers online and they all say great stuff but they always seem to leave out nuances here and there. You seem to make sure you're explaining this and that and how this and that affect this and that. You come off as very relatable and bring up what you felt when you were learning to sing. Which helps understand the struggle and is comforting.

Could you maybe recommend a volume level we could check ourselves against as a reference to get an idea of the proper volume we should be singing at? Perhaps something we deal with everyday like the sound of a car, a household appliance, our speaking voice, etc... Without being in the same room with you, it's hard to know what feels right.
@singingmatterscalder
@singingmatterscalder Ай бұрын
Well, I would aim to recognise what it feels like and it doesn’t need to be much louder than speaking in a way. Some people practice Speech Level Singing, for example. But how it feels should be an indicator. When you go higher, those precious vocal cords are stretched thin and moving fast, they need to be used more delicately , yes even when aiming for distortion and stuff. You must back off more as you go high and back off more. Try to do the same thing but I always say to students, take 50% of that volume away. Try it way less powerful and see what happens . It’s hard to give an exact answer but issues that arise can tell you there’s too much going into it. Sometimes it’s not easy to get the voice to operate differently to what it’s used to, over time aim to reduce the oomph of your singing and you will have much more flexibility and freedom instead of rigidity and strain . Hope it helps. Try any phrase less powerfully and see what happens
@ashlarband
@ashlarband Ай бұрын
@singingmatterscalder cool. Thanks man. FWIW, there are free decibel meter apps that allow you to use your phone to measure the volume of your singing voice relative to to speaking. I'm going to try that too and see if it helps.

Hey Calder! I love your videos and the format how you present them and I feel I've been learning a lot from you already - thank you so much for your work and teachings! :) I was wondering if you could share some tips about singing in a similar style as The Cure's Robert Smith. I'm getting better at finding my mix, reaching higher notes singing a lot with a few of my favourite singers, but I always struggle with RS' Voice and can't reach high notes the same way, when I'm singing other bands songs containing the same pitches. Maybe it's still a problem with my larynx, but I always sound way too thin and can't reach the pitches anyway when trying many Cure songs. Admittedly, Open and Doing the Unstuck aren't very easy songs to begin with.

@singingmatterscalder

Yes !! Believe me, it’s not an easy journey but it is possible . Have to learn when and how to let go and start blending , mixing , usually lower down than you think. Trust this process, get fine tuned to the sensations when you sing. So much of it will seem normal until you realise it’s actually trapping and straining the voice . I’ve been through it all, had an operation, battered it after recovery. I’m here to say you can learn how to use it way better. Hopefully without destroying it in the process like me!
