I usually don't like very long videos (as we are used to with current KZbin trends), however, I found the length of it and you talking like human very helpful.

It’s even better to breath through nose while singing. There’s really interesting book Breath by James Nestor where were examples of athletes and singers that started breathing through nose and were able to perform better and even healed some of their health issues. It is harder when I try it but these times when I got it it feels much more supported. Anyways topic is important, thanks for giving some cool informations!

I don’t know the science of it but it feels like the lower back expands more when breathing through the nose. Almost like support is automatically set up. It’s not something I can get used to while singing but I try to do it during scales and exercises

I’ve been looking into bel canto and appoggio breathing technique, and they way they had me feel the sensation to aim for was to breath in through my nose. I’ve been practicing getting that same sensation when I breath in through my mouth. I agree with you, for me, I feels more supported like that.

Great talk/lesson. Sort of proves that often the best teachers are the ones that have been through the crap rather than the ones that had just done it right from the start, if that makes any sense. I heard once somewhere that Bach was a terrible teacher, because it (music/composition I dunno) was all so obvious to him he couldn't understand how anyone couldn't get it, so he was impatient and couldn't explain stuff haha. Sounds like you're from the north of England somewhere, the place I feel the most at home. Unfortunately I'm a long way from there and walk around upside down atm . haha Thanks and kind regards

What about breathing through nose, not through mouth?
@ThePeacefulvibes20 күн бұрын
Love all your videos bro. Quick question.. and I’ve never understood maybe because my technique and breathing is off.. When you reach for a high note while taking that breath, should I be exhaling and squeezing my abdominal muscles for support? Or should I push out more with abdomen? I’m so confused on how to transition to a higher note without tension.. thank you in advance. 🙏🏽
@singingmatterscalder20 күн бұрын
@@ThePeacefulvibes Hey thanks for the comment. It’s important to grasp what is happening when we sing high. A higher note does not need more air . Anytime I see a singer mention pushing I just think nooooooooo !! Or squeezing noooooooo ! A lot of the exercises for breathing are just to get the lower Ab’s involved and thw diaphragm involved. When we are used to it you don’t have to think about it at all. Everything should remain effortless. Don’t squeeze or push . You can gently hold that support and hold the breath back. It’s so counterintuitive to people but it’s not when you grasp how the voice makes higher notes. Higher note = higher frequency, this means the cords are coming together much faster . So you can’t push air through them, or they won’t be able to come together that fast . They are also stretched much thinner and longer and again they can’t handle excessive air. Excessive air pressure works against the voice , especially when hitting higher notes. You must use less air, less force, less pressure for high notes. It’s so hard to get people to understand this. They think high notes are hard I must give more power more this and more that. No . Les , less , less. It’s an illusion. The voice sounds intense when stretched. It sounds stretched out . It sounds louder because our ears are sensitive to the higher frequency . Breathing is simple once you can control it . Imagine you are not allowing any air out at all (you are) but just imagine you’re trying to hold all the breath back. You only need a little. But it’s the vocal cords themselves which should control that. That’s why the exercises of hits going that sound of the cords coming together, and then allowing a noisy “hhh” to escape are useful. Not pushing it , allowing it. Controlling it with the cords. Training everything else to chill out and get out the way. It’s hard to explain on text. 😀 try the “huh”…”hhh” without pushing it. I’m not sure what I did in this video actually . You are trying to get to a point where the cords know how much air and nothing fights against it. There will be a range of things causing tension but too much air is one of them because you then have to compensate. Les less less for higher notes. Less everything . Apart from the stretch . I hope this helps . I’ve got more on my patreon page. But I don’t go for the big sell !

Thank you so much for this video, I'm starting my singing journey (right now I can barely sing at all) and your videos seem like the perfect starting point; one thing I'm not able to do is singing/talking without letting go of air, do you actually not let go of air at all?
@singingmatterscalder5 ай бұрын
@@Radior_ well, yeah, weirdly it’s good to almost imagine you’re not letting the air out at all. Obviously you are because it wouldn’t work without it but we need to retain it as much as possible, this is how singers can hold really long notes because they are holding it back, using support in the body and keeping the vocal cords nice and closed . I’m going to have a load more content on breathing available soon . Imagine how hard it is to sing well when you lose all the air in the first word of the line …

Do you find lip trills any good?
@singingmatterscalder6 ай бұрын
Absolutely! They are a great warm up, used by singers from all walks of life. Tree can tell you a lot about how your voice is functioning, including breath control and support, but resonance as well. But it’s the ‘semi-occluded vocal tract’ element of lip trills and other such like exercises that gives the vocal cords a little bit of air pressure from above them as well as below that they really like! it’s a great warmup used by all sorts of people… seems like some weird load of nonsense but it’s actually really really useful

I find when I breathe through my diaphragm, it feels like I'm getting less air then when I take a deep breath with my chest. Is this due to a lack of muscle training? Or does this sound like I'm not properly breathing through my diaphragm?

Well, I can tell you that I have only just seen this comment. I intend to respond to every single comment on my channel. Turns out I have just found dozens I've missed. I am going through them, from different videos in a big list in my account. I am the last person on earth to be accused of not responding, Ask my ex. :) 😂😂 I am generally someone who responds almost too much! I apologise I missed this. You may not receive this apology as I am some youtube entity to you. But I am a normal guy here sat replying to comments I didn't know were there .! Quite frustrating really. Well, it seems I didn't respond to the person above,.., > We don't need a lot of air. the voice doesn't need tonnes of air. But these exercises are designed to get you using your breathing mechanisms, feeling it , knowing when you are losing air or when you are holding it back nicely. getting used to using breath from the lower ab's and involving those muscles. In the end the simple dog pant goes a long way. Less air on a diaphragm breath could be just the feeling is different, or it may stop half way and not fully keep expanding,.. most people take a minute to get the belly to really expand.. again, in the end we don't need to go for crazy inhales .. just short quick ones. and not losing it all in one word at the start of the phrase./

I have a question about “engaging the core” I hear people say appoggio “lean out” & push in from the core at the same time. Which is correct? I do an ab workout daily & my core is pretty much engaged w/o purposely engaging it. It’s frustrating and exhausting trying to figure out what is actually correct. Thank you for sharing your info!

Singing from diaphragm as technique became nowadays just like a moto in KZbin. In the genuine reality anyone can sing great by taking proper voice lessons from good teachers and without thinking about diaphragm at all if the mouth's position is done right leading your diaphragm work by itself automatically . Yes, I say the mouth's position itself will cause the diaphragm to move and breathe properly. I can sing with my legs up in the air & with my head right on the floor as in yoga without straining because of good breathing done automatically without thinking of it. When you drive you don't need to watch how the car's wheels will be spinning because you know it automatically that the car's wheels are spinning.
@singingmatterscalder21 күн бұрын
Sure ..in the end it doesn't matter , but we first need to get rid of problems, understand what is not good and not helpful in breath control, feel the diaphragm, take some breaths right., Feel the difference between squeezing air out and not. Take some quick sharp inhales. Play around with the principles, and use air more sparingly during phrases. Once you've felt your way through it. you don't need to think about it at all . This is for people who are nowhere near that yet.
@singingmatterscalder21 күн бұрын
Also, it was a motto way before youtube existed. In fact it's one of the only vocal technique phrases that normal folk and untrained folk have ever heard of. hence being a way in .. cheers
