After 3 years of dedicated masking, social distancing, and trying to be careful we were finally caught. At anchor. In Ireland. What to do when someone gets sick on a boat? What to do when both people aboard get sick?

Glad to see you made it through. My wife got it, maybe last year, and she was in a rough state. One of my daughters got it more recently and wasn't as bad. I never tested myself but if I had it when wife or daughter got it, it was just a mild cold with some coughing. Doesn't matter what it is, it just sucks being sick. You may be negative now, but you still need to rest up and continue recovery. Take it easy, take care.

Thank you for posting this video. Most people don't think about getting sick while cruising. Glade you two are alright. Maybe when you two are back to full health you could do a video about what to do when you get sick onboard. And talk a little about solo vs couples getting sick onboard.

OMG so sorry you two caught covid. I cannot imagine going through that. My daughter caught it and lost sense of smell. She is ok of course; however my ex-wife and her husband caught it around 2 years ago and he passed away from it. It is a horrible thing to go through.God Bless you and keep you safe. I have been lucky not to get it and I don't think I would make it because of underlying health issues.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your ex-wife's husband. That must have been incredibly hard. We were extremely careful for many reasons and very much did not want to get Covid, but it can be so difficult especially as cruisers. At a certain point visas run out and we have to get on the move, and that involves a lot of interactions with people. Take care of yourself and I hope you continue to avoid this. -Mo

I finally caught it in April of this year, I think when I went to a hardware store that was poorly ventilated and I was starting to get too casual about masking. It was a work trip to our boat in Washington and I woke up in the morning with a scratchy throat I was really suspicious of, and I put on a mask before I even got out of bed, told my brother I had a really bad feeling about this, and he left the boat while I hurriedly packed for the two-day drive back home. Thankfully he didn't get it from me. I had one horrendous night in a hotel on the way home, but I pushed on so that I wouldn't get stuck there. I then quarantined on our boat in California while my wife stayed up at our house in the mountains. It was 19 days till I tested negative, and I stayed two extra days knowing that we would be right next to each other in bed and I didn't want to infect her. I got down to some of the weirdest foods still left on the boat during that quarantine! I wasn't going to go out shopping and infect somebody else.

To be clear, I did actually get one food drop off from a friend toward the end. Still, you can imagine the odd food items lurking deep in the lockers! And yeah, I was "up-to-date" on vaccination, but the current vaccines don't have sterilizing immunity, and the current variants are highly infectious. You're way less likely to die from it even with a rather stale vaccination. I was only really sick for a couple of days, then really weak for a month or two. I also got shortness of breath which is only 80-90% recovered now, 9 months later. I have a couple of moderate risk factors, and had it bad enough the first time that I do still mask in high risk areas - often I'm the only one doing so, but that's what my risk assessment says to do.

I'm so glad you two are feeling better and you had each other to help out each other. In the last three years I never caught it although there were a couple times I had a low fever and felt something coming on, I think I was really lucky plus I lived like a hermit and didn't go anywhere. Most people couldn't do that. One thing that might have helped me was when I went somewhere and was around a large number of people when I came home I used Listerine mouthwash and then I used a nasal rinse with half a teaspoon of baby shampoo and squirted it up my nasal passages. Apparently, the virus enters the upper respiratory system through entryways in the mouth to a large extent. so according to some people brushing our teeth and mouthwash was supposed to help a lot. But who really knows. I also started taking a lot of vitamin D and K to raise my D levels, but I imagine you guys have pretty good vitamin D from being out in the sun. On the good side, both of you should have a lot stronger immune system against the virus in the future. Better days ahead

Glad you're better now. Covid sucks. I got it when it first hit the states. Lost my taste and smell for 2 weeks and I was 150 miles offshore when I realized I had it. I run a commercial fishing boat so I suffered through the 10 day trip and most likely got it from my crew who didn't social distance by any means( they are all in their 20's and invincible apparently). I got double vaccinated almost a year later when the vaccine came out and then caught the DELTA variant and then Omicron a few months after, but at that point I didn't even know I had it if my daughter didn't test positive I would've just thought I had a cold. I had so many antibodies at that point I would jokingly tell my wife I can see them when I pee and maybe we should see if Pfizer wants to buy some!

I attempted to reply to the comment on my previous comment, but three times my reply was deleted. This time I posted the title of the article rather than a link. As almost every, if not every, variant has been more infectious than previous variants, it is reasonable to conclude the numbers of those who are asymptomatic would also go up.

I let out an "aw, buddy!" just so empathetic for you two. I had covid bad like that back in March and I've had some long symptoms, too. Watch out for over-exertion, because I've been bed-ridden for days after just 1 or 2 long days. I lost part of my beard and it's just starting to come back now.
