the docks were a hassle for ships because they had to keep reballasting due to fresh and salt water changes. nobody liked london ports.

They are so worried (Not) about the bombs on the Montgomery that they have allowed the building of hundreds of houses on the island, would it not have been better to have removed them and then once the work had been done to allow the building of houses around the coastal areas to have been built, but as always they leave it for the next generation, on the hope that nothing happens in their time. Thought we were allies with the americans seems we were not that is while the ship was left, they had the technology then to have dealt with it.Look at the way they cleared Pearl Harbour up after the attack. Let us hope it never goes up, it does not bear thinking about. Am guessing it would send a tidal wave up both the thanes and the river medway.

At 1:03 continental freight wagons were seen lined up. On one occasion I saw an SJ Hbfs standing there.

They should cover the Isle of Sheppey permanently in snow as it looks so much better with it. 🤣

I know it's a commonplace to say how well everybody dressed in those days but some things really do jump out at you. At 4:48 for instance, there's a boy of about 12 running along the beach wearing long trousers and with his shirt neatly tucked in. Also, I love to see a traditional carousel, like at 3:08, with painted wooden horses.

This video brought back so many memories from my childhood (I'm 75 now). We stayed in digs in Seaview Road (a misnomer if ever there was one) the landlady was Mrs Wakeling assisted by her daughter Sadie. We used the beach at Thorpe Bay (by the gas works). We used to get beach trays from the Bulldog Cafe opposite the beach and in the evening we used to walk into Southend proper and get fish and chips from Clark's on the seafront. I also loved the Rossi's ice cream (dad called them 'topper-uppers') and I can almost taste them now. Ah! Memories!!

I lived there from the early t1980s and left in 1996 - I can see that from this film it had already severely declined by the 80s... and continued to decline.... Last time I was there was 2008 and the old Woolworth which had been there for many years and was the center of the shopping in the town had been boarded up along with many other places. Such a shame that Sheerness was probably quite nice at some point but well before the 1980s

Many a time I polished the big slide with wax in one hand and a cloth in the other . Very difficult at times as I kept on sliding trying to polish . Good times .

I have a lovely photo of gran and I on holiday in Southend. We are in the ladies room, she's cleaned me up and put a clean white dress on me and I am sitting on the counter. I was about three years old, so it would have been 1957-8 time line

Look ! English people enjoying England and doing English things in an English seaside town ! Look carefully all you immigration apologists and try to absorb the images of all that has been lost. A time when we weren’t afraid to go out at night in our own towns. Don’t tell me things are better now…..because they’re not.
