Thanks so much for this great film of East Germany. I have longed admired their railways and several things about their society - the refreshing lack of advertising in public places and on trams for example. The low level of urban violence. The cheap cost of public transport. I was surprised to see, though, that the sun actually shone there at times whereas we were always told the weather was only fine in the west!!! The approach to Dresden station was magnificently filmed - a real feeling of excitement and awe emerged - entering a big city without the impression that you were going to be devoured by it was really positive. Today, cities scare me off.

(Steam-)railways as an integral part of daily life. There are lots of working steam locomotives around in the 2020's, but without the scenery of the 1960's they are like bears in a circus : impressive but out of place. Thank you for sharing this material!

Nice to see. I was born in 1967 and so I have never seen steam in normal daily operation. Since 1980 railways are my passion, especially german steam locomotives, and it all started with a railway magazine. I have read many books on steam, and visited a number of musea, but there is nothing like an original movie of the old steam days. Thanks to share it!

I have a bizarre childhood memory of the outgoing steam locomotive era. My mom and me were on the way back home from the grocer store, when the railway barriers went down in front of us. It was already pitchblack dark, but quite a lot of people were gathering in front of the barriers. It must have been winter. A steam locomotive, which was probably shunting at the station, came to a stop in the middle of the level crossing. The men on the locomotive looked out of the window and were probably waiting for a signal. A smalltalk started between them and the people in front of the barrier. I only remember a single sentence, a complaint from the stoker or the train driver: "And always cold feet..." Do with that what you want ;) I guess it was at the beginning or the end of 1966. The setting was a place called Hesedorf.

Simply enchanting,one of the most beautiful parts of Europe was East Germany,i always wanted to visit before the fall of the Iron Curtain but i finally made this part of Germany in 1991 and fell in love with its rail system in the dying days of the DR.Got to visit almost all the remaining narrow gauge lines before thy became private.Thanks for showing this beautiful film and of course part one as well.Ps loved the tram shots.

Beautiful, again some locomotive classes not seen in more recent footage, Baureihe 92.20, Baureihe 56.20, Reko Lok 58.30. But at the end I see EMU/DMU? on the high line which have cabs like the Soviet class ER1, can someone give clarity about these, as ER1s were broad gauge they couldn't run as such in East Germany, or were there built for standard gauge as well?

Looks like a ČSD M 498.0 (built in Hungary), the train "Vindobona" (Berlin-Vienna) was operated with Czech, Austrian and East German DMUs alternately.

@@schmierlapp353 That must be it, it does indeed look very similar to the ER1 in the shape of the cab, thanks for the info.
