Thirty five years ago I fortunately avoided prison for what probably would have been considered pre-meditated murder of my neighbor and his dogs. He had a pit bull and Rottweiler who would charge the street when my kids came outside, they were terrified. Multiple calls to the police but this being before everything on video it was his word against mine. Being a small Florida town no one paid much attention to someone being armed, most of us had a shotgun or rifle in the back window of the truck. So one day I was cleaning the inside I pulled out the 12 ga and laid it on the tailgate as the neighbor was coming out of his house. I yelled across the street that we needed to talk about his dogs, he kind of laughed and that is where I stepped over the line. With shotgun in hand I told him "If your dogs every hurt my kids I'm going to sue your widow". Yes, it was a direct threat, but of course without video it was his word against mine. He was a lot bigger than me but I did have one more thing to help, a co-worker was a biker type and him and his friends did roofing on the side, I had signed a deal for them to replace my roof starting the very next day, Saturday. Early in the morning eight of these hairy road in on their loud machines, all except one and he drove the big work truck. It was a one day job and I had set up a grill in the front yard and several coolers of beer for the wrap party. Of course the neighbor noticed, especially when I was standing at the end of driveway with several of the guys pointing out the house as my young kids excitedly gestured and pointed as the neighbor came outside. That was probably the best $3,000 I ever spent. About a month later several of the guys came back to fix a minor roof problem, pulling up just as my now quiet neighbor was moving out.
