I really liked the TM: Minnesota version, but this one is better. I like how they're using original tasks. At least from what I can tell they are aren't just regurgitating tasks like TM:MN.
@catastropheintended88Ай бұрын
I don’t think TM MN used that many tasks, in the first season at least every one was original (the board game task accidentally matched a UK task). And I don’t think that the second season borrowed more tasks than the recent UK seasons, but there ARE still borrowed tasks…

There's a certain irony to this episode. In the original Taskmaster, tasks are usually physically challenging while art is a rare but dreaded type of task. Here, only one person even attempted to properly complete the only physical task, while art was a focal point in several tasks. I also really love how the stationery costume task was turned into a team task, as I feel a lot of the solo tasks deserved to be used competitively. It's also good to see that previous contestants had a role to play and that the audience earned a whopping three points this time. I'm very curious to see if the audience actually wins a future episode (truly a first for Taskmaster if it happens). One could also argue that this episode was a first in that it's the first time a task was designed specifically to give an assistant useful life skills (as opposed to less beneficial tasks such as delivering Alex's lunch). And considering the cast also completely failed to abuse Reuben (the brief chase doesn't count), we honestly have one of the most wholesome episodes in Taskmaster history. As with the first episode, there were a couple places where the audio was a bit dodgy (most notably the clip of Vince buying the studio was too quiet), but I feel it was better quality overall. Headphones pretty much solve that issue for those of us too lazy to turn on subtitles, and there were very few distortions this time around. So whatever you guys have been doing to address budget and technical limitations has definitely been working. And now for the next agoonising month-long wait for Episode 3. I'm very curious to see where the next tasks go and if there will be a hidden (unintended?) theme again. You're really hitting your stride with the role, Ryan, and I love how you're continuing to break the mold and give us a more memorable and unique Taskmaster than any of the other spinoffs (official and otherwise). I'd love to see you and Reuban face off against Greg and Alex one day in a joint interview or even a little friendly competition, so keep those tasks coming!
@GeekPublic2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your words! The costume task was turned into a team task because I thought it was always interesting to have one team task per episode. It makes for great dynamics! I would laugh my butt off if the collective audience won an episode. It's not impossible, just highly unlikely. But I think I need backup plans in case that DOES happen. Stranger things (like a four-way tie) have happened before... I see what you mean about the audio in some places (rechecked it and I think it got quiet due to adjusting other audio levels) but it's also one of the reasons why I spend a few hours to subtitle the show and not rely on the automatic captioning. Subtitles help make a show easier to watch and in the process, I've had to listen to words multiple times and after 10 times playing a clip, I know that my best guess was often close enough. Listen, one day I would love to meet Alex and Greg one day. I will either cry or pee in my pants.
@ValosiTiamata2 ай бұрын
@@GeekPublic I'm pretty sure you'd do both! That would likely end up being my own reaction, since I'd be terrified they'd hand me an envelope with a solo task. The costume task was such a wasted idea when it was done as a solo task. Sure, the "guess the pun" part was a fun way to give points, but there was a lot of missed potential.Thus, seeing it turned into a team task really made my day. I appreciate the subs, but having kids, I often have to multitask when watching, so I find I rely more on the audio itself. What was nice about this episode over the last was that it was much easier to understand, and since I had headphones on already, the quiet parts weren't that bad. The first episode was different, as the echo and other audio issues means I had to replay bits several times, even with headphones on. The subs ended up being necessary at some points in that one. I'm kind of rooting for the audience to win an episode, even if it's only because you end up docking too many contestant points for one reason or another. Ever since that infamous water task where Alex had to disqualify EVERYONE, there's always been the possibility of an episode ending with zero points or the winner only beating the item task. And since you have a new group every episode, the risk of something like that happening is even greater. Perhaps for an episode where the audience wins you could have one massive tiebreaker where the contestants perform for a guessing game. The audience will find pens and paper under their seats and must guess correctly. Each round, those audience members who guess right stay standing while those that fail must sit. Last one standing gets a special prize (such as a nutcracker decorated to look like Greg called the "Taskbreaker" or "Nutmaster"), and must then give an admonishment speech to the contestants about how disappointed the audience is (mimicking Greg's reaction after the water task).
@GeekPublic2 ай бұрын
@@ValosiTiamata I don't know if I should blame you or thank you for thinking of ideas for if one day, the audience DOES win ;D But I do love involving the audience in different ways when they come to the live show so that's going to remain a constant.

This was an excellent low-budget interpretation of the show. Very few understand just how much it costs to produce a panel show like this, and the fact that you've managed to make it both entertaining and faithful to the spirit of the original show on a much tighter budget really says a lot. The all-female panel was surprisingly good, and I found myself torn between who to root for because they were all so charismatic (unlike the "official" Taskmaster US panel). However, I do have to give Sarah an extra point for continuing the old TM tradition of poking fun at feminism by taking her apron off ONLY for the cooking task. Ryan was a more laid-back Taskmaster, replacing traditional antagonism with charm and ingenuity. The fact that he was giving points to the audience and had them more directly involved was a wonderful touch. And Reuban could go head-to-head with Alex Horne when it comes to deadpanning and calmly being abused by the contestants. If there was ONE complaint (which is purely a nitpick), it's that the lack of personal mics sometimes made it a little difficult to catch everything being said. This was especially true on the stage, where the acoustics caused some vocal distortions. However, providing a personal mic for everyone is expensive, thus I cannot call this more than a nitpick for how well the episode was made overall. I'm quite looking forward to the next episode and the new panel, although I do hope these four make a return in future episodes. You've all done an amazing job, and I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this series.
@GeekPublic2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! As you mentioned, making this on what little we have made me really appreciate how much money and time it takes to do the real thing. In terms of mics (and that's a fair nitpick), it was a matter of things like "where can the resources and equipment that we have go?" Our cameras do have mics on them and some point, we'll upgrade. But it's also why we take the time to add subtitles for accessibility. It also just helps to clarify what was said. As the Taskmaster, I'm still trying to figure out my voice but I'm thrilled that you picked up how much I like playing and including the audience in this show. I love making the audience feel like they're part of it, not just watching it.
@ValosiTiamata2 ай бұрын
@@GeekPublic I feel like that audience participation will be what makes this series stand out from all the others. One never knows when a random audience member could be pulled for a live task, allowing them to steal points from the panel. Likewise, there's the ability to do a live team challenge where one team is taken offstage while the other gathers information about an audience member needed for a bigger task (similar to some of the famous song/poem challenges from the mainstream shows). As far as finding your voice, a lot of people forget that Greg's personality as the definitive Taskmaster is actually due to his style of comedy, not because the role required it. Thus, it's best to do what feels most natural for you instead of focusing on those who have come before. The more playful nature you've shown will likely appeal to American audiences more than the British style of humour. It's been often said the main reason the NA series failed was because Brits enjoy the self-depreciating nature of panel shows whereas the American contestants took very obvious offense to it. You have a disarming nature that encourages the fun factor while also getting in plenty of sarcastic jabs. I could honestly see a future episode include a "Task the Taskmaster" task where the contestants turn the tables and get to come up with a task before filming starts. You and Reuben would then be forced to compete in a YT video, and if Reuben wins (by comments section vote), he gets to be "Taskmaster for a Day" for the next episode, meaning you would have to play assistant for that episode (and opening the door for a sadistically vengeful Taskmaster the next episode). It's something they'd never get away with on the original show, as Greg wouldn't have the same patience that Alex does for being abused by the contestants. In fact, I can see a LOT of ways your personality could lend itself to future tasks that wouldn't be possible if you were taking a more aggressive approach to your role.

There isn't a Taskmaster USA because they tried it and made an absolute Horlicks out of it. Taskmaster with no charisma and contestants that were obnoxious and rude for the sake of it. Taskmaster is on all over the World and the only Country that made a pigs ear of it was America.
@GeekPublic4 ай бұрын
I don't disagree with you. When they originally brought the show to the US, they changed the format way too much and I didn't feel they got the spirit of Taskmaster. It's also been six years since that show aired and I wanted to make a live show version closer to the original format that's everywhere else in the world, not a "preconceived made for 30 minutes with ads shoved in it" show.
