These sound great!!! The only one that I have read was The Witch and the Tsar and sadly it was a bit meh for me. I can't remember why exactly now, as I read it last year, but I remember feeling very frustrated by the end. I have a copy of The House with Chicken Legs on my kids book shelf though, so maybe I'll read that over Christmas.

Thanks for this review! I’ve been on the fence about going back to Gwynne after Faithful and the Fallen (I liked but didn’t love). Some of the darker elements you’ve spoken about have me intrigued. I’ll give them a go!

Hi, yes, is this where I sign up for the Fritha appreciation and apologists group? We're getting our badges soon, right? Totally agree that this series is hugely underhyped compared to Gwynne's other series though! I'm honestly not sure how I'd rank them though...

Eeeek, we broke your 3-star curse of last month!! This vlog turned out even better than I was hoping for, I am so so so happy that my picks all worked for you in their own way. I feel like these 3 books are all very different in their plots, yet that deep character-driven writing style is what makes them all favourites for me and I am so glad they connected with you in the same way ❤❤ Brightwash is indeed BRUTAL, and Krystle is just the best at making you feel all those raw human emotions. I can totally see the comp to Broken Earth in the themes, though I personally didn't enjoy that series because of the storytelling structure and way prefer Krystle's approach. SO glad you loved it though!! 🤩 And totally fair with Fangs, it definitely has some debuts quirks and flaws but it is still an exceptionally strong start to the series. Also, Revek deserves to walk on a pile of Lego's, he is SO wild hahaha. I think you will be pleased with how the lore and world building expands in the sequel and novellas 🤌 Doble didn't have the budget to hire an editor btw, so he self-edited with his wife's help... considering that, I think they did a really good job even with some of the slip-ups! And ugh you are making me want to reread Wickwire, I loooove that found family so much. It's almost a bit cozy in the middle and then that ending happens hahah. Also really nice that you enjoyed the audiobook so much, that is one of my favourite performances, so lively and immersive! 😍 Thanks so much for trusting me to take over your TBR for a bit. You will have to do the same for me next year when I have time open again on the TBR. Good luck with finding books I haven't read yet 🤣🤣 I LOVED THIS 🥰🥰🥰

You did break the curse!! Like a guardian angel! The picks worked really well together as well, they complemented one another in a way. Character driven is always going to be preferable to me so it makes sense these all worked so well. They all have different approaches to how they present the characters yet all feel authentic which was awesome! Brightwash really did have some hard-to-read moments but it was done in such a way that really spoke to the humanity of the reader. I don't think Broken Earth reads similarly, the writing is completely different, but yeah, so many overlapping themes. Clearly they are a theme that works for me since they're both books I've loved. I mean, there were so many incredible things about the writing in fangs of war, and though I could tell it hadn't been looked at by an editor, it doesn't detract from how talented a writer he is. Revek was a fascinating character to follow, because he's not one of those "misunderstood" villains, but at the same time he's interesting in his despicableness Wickwire was so balanced because it had Dickensian murder mystery, cozy fantasy, political fantasy and even a splash of middle grade whimsy thrown in for good measure. I'm so glad you got me to read that one! Thank you for choosing such awesome books for me and I'd love to return the favour at some point, though I think it will be quite the challenge since you have read EVERYTHING, I'm sure there's a medieval cantos somewhere on a dusty shelf you've not gotten to yet xD

This was great!! I'm really pleased to hear that you liked Wickwire Watch. I will definitely pick it up...probably in 2025 at some point. The Legacy of the Brightwatch sounds good, but I really can't read about horrible things happening to children, so maybe not for me? Plus, I'm probably the only person in the world that really didn't like Broken Earth, so if you think it is similar, again maybe not for me. I'm still soldering on with The Stormlight Archive..and loving it. Also reading Orbital which has just won the Booker. Loving that too. I hope your Nov reading is going well! 📚

I was surprised at how much I liked Wickwire Watch, especially because I thought it was going to be a murder mystery, which it only really vaguely is. Brightwash was great but yeah, 100% say it's not your thing. It was really hard to read at some times. It only really shares a certain world building element and some themes with Broken Earth, it doesn't read the same, but even still. Where are you up to now in Stormlight? Glad you're loving it, I hope to continue and fall in love with it myself at the end of the month. I keep hearing mixed things about Orbital so I'm glad you're having a good time. My November has hit the ground running so hopefully I can keep that up. ❤

@bookschocaholic I'm still on Words of Radiance. I'm not a super fast reader 😆...but have also been taking it fairly slowly and reading other, smaller books in-between...like Orbital. I'm hoping to finish WoR by the end of the month though. Orbital, I'm only about 20 pages in. I picked it up last night. It's very lyrical and poetic. Some beautiful imagery. But we'll have to see ultimately. Some books like that I love...like Pirenesi, some I really don't. Its only about 130 pages, so should be a quick read.

First of all, very happy and relieved that you and your loved ones are all safe over there in Spain. It's been terrifying to see the updates :( Also really pleasantly surprised by how much you enjoyed these books. I think I personally left too much time in between instalments for both of these series and that really hurt my personal experience, but you are getting me tempted to do a second chance binge reread. And yes, Dark Tower has some awfully over the top disturbing elements, and I honestly think a lot of it was King writing under influence lol. Glad you ended the readathon on a somewhat high note!! :)

Thanks! I'm so glad everyone I know in Valencia is unaffected too! I think it was the low expectations that helped. Neither are books I would go out of my way to recommend, they just weren't as bad as I thought they would be an I ended up having a good time. I always find King a big over the top, hence why he's not really for me. I don't know why I keep picking up his books TBH haha!! <3
