Know what you mean about using an iPad all day. Mine gets coffee, coke and whatever dropped on it every day. I am considering the iPad Pro M4 to go along with my 9th and 10th generation iPads. I use my microfiber cloth and eye glass cleaner on the screens of my iPads when they need it, usually after cleaning my glasses. I do not like Mac OS, never have because it pales against the Windows OS. I grew old with DOS, Windows and Microsoft compilers and always refused to port my programs over to the MAC. I am a retired Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP). I have moved over to IOS on my iPads in the last few years and like it, but not MAC OS. After I got my iPad my Toshiba laptop hasn’t even been turned on. I am going to buy a IPad Pro 13” M4 in the next week or so. The thing that most folks don’t know about iPads is how you can dictate messages, emails and the like on an iPad. Siri is smarter and faster than me with a stylus or my fingers.

Evening David, Just received my M4 Pro, and it's beautiful. I opted for the extra ram (64GB), over the SSD (Only got the 512GB) but it is so quiet, and cool to the touch whilst running, I am glad I took the plunge as I was umming and ahhing for a couple of days. I added the 10GB ethernet and the 16 core Neural Engine, as I cannot see myself buying another compute for a few years, so hopefully I am future-proofed. Setup was a bit of a nightmare, it didn't recognise my blue mouse, then couldn't find my old Mac-mini, couldn't restore from Time-Machine and finally, I could not get past the log-in screen (which other users had issues with too)! All sorted now, and I am happy with my purchase, as you appear to be too! Best, Bill
@DavidLewisTech4 күн бұрын
Hi William - I am so happy for you that you got the issues sorted. Luckily, my set-up was straightforward. I am still using it as my main Mac ahead of the M1 Max MacBook Pro. Interesting you mention storage...I amy be making a video about that early in the new year and some good workarounds. Enjoy your new Mac 💻

I'm about to retire my late 2014 iMac and will be replacing it with either a Mac Mini & 27" Studio display, or a 24" iMac. I have a question about storage. My current iMac has 16 GB of memory and a 3.12 TB Fusion drive and I'm considering a spec for the Mac Mini of 24GB of memory and 1TB SSD as a suitable replacement. The thing I'm not sure about is if this will give me enough for future growth - I'm interested in music and photography and use iCloud as well as a separate external drive for using with Time Machine. I have no experience of Apple silicon but guess the SSD will be more reliable and probably faster than the fusion drive? I'm using almost 0.7TB of the available 3.12 TB at the moment, so think a 1TB SSD should be fine. Any advice or suggestions on this would be much appreciated.
@DavidLewisTech4 күн бұрын
Hi there - trading up from an old Intel iMac to Apple silicon is going to be a game changer for you! 24GB of memory will be plenty from my experience, certainly for the work you are going to be doing. I am looking at making a video about storage options in the New Year. If you have the non-Pro M4 silicon you'll have Thunderbolt 4 ports. That will mean data transfer speeds of around 40Gbps - quick, but not as quick as the internal SSD. Also, external SSDs are often great for storage but often overheat if you are read/writing from them, so be careful of that. 1TB sounds as if it should be plenty. It sounds to me as if internal SSDs would be the best way forward for you.

I use an iPad first because I draw, which means if I have to choose I leave the laptop behind. So the idea of Mac Os (or even a hybrid) on an iPad is tempting. The idea of drawing on a foldable iPad seems insane though. That screen would have to be as durable if not more durable than current iPad models, and it would fold? I think Apple would be best releasing a big foldable portable monitor and not calling it an ipad. --- I'd totally be down for a foldable phone, but I would like a smaller clamshell one like the Motorola Razer. Where a small phone folds into a normal phone. I wouldn't buy a normal phone that folds into an iPad.
@DavidLewisTech5 күн бұрын
Well, if Apple does get into the foldable market, it seems likely the phone will come first...

I love my MacBook Pro M1 Pro. They are just to good. Interested to know how you got the Fusion doc to work with the Mac mini, the only cable I have seen for this doc is horizontal designed for the Macbook pro. As the tthe Mac mini ports are Vertical i wondered if you needed to buy another cable. Or can you just use two separate T4 cables?
@DavidLewisTech10 күн бұрын
Ah! A fellow Fusion Dock user! Great, aren't they? I'd be lost without it. Yup, you are quite right, there is no easy fix...I use 2 x T4 cables. It's a shame to use up two of the ports, but for now, it suits me fine. I may get a 2 into 1 cable adapter at some point, though.

I’ve been using the camera button pretty consistently since I upgraded. However, I don’t use the full functionality - just to open up the camera, zoom (when in landscape), and then take the shot. Toggling between sub-menus is just to faffy and so I’ll use the on screen controls in post-processing.

For me, m3 15" with 24gb ram and 512 ssd I got for 1422$ all in is working fantastic! Logic pro X, I have pushed this thing to limits I'll never use, 32 tracks, most with 1-4 plugins. That's my use case. Final Cut Pro - It does well, blender, etc does well. Those aren't my specialty though so I can't say hell ya lets fng go although I will say it was way way better than I thought. Also battery life is crazy good, I work on this thing most of the day and forget to plug it in sometimes and go "oh, that's way higher % than I thought" I came from a 2014 MBP with 16gb ram 512 SSD. I bought that used for 700$ in 2018, it did very very well in logic. Intel cpu, which was maxed out to 3.8ghz but it doesn't compare to the m3. M3 is just a slapper of faces compared when talking in the sense of working with logic. I could still do 24-32 tracks but it would get bogged when plugins came to town. dunno , just some hot take from a random that's been using it for a while now.
@DavidLewisTech12 күн бұрын
Sounds as if you are as happy with it as I am. Every time I pick it up to use it, I'm reminded how good it is. These Apple silicon Macs have changed everything
