STOP Choosing the Wrong iPhone! 16 or 16 Pro?

I did think of this when I was watching the event. They explained a lot of things for the 16 but when they showed the 16 Pro, its basically the 16 with an extra camera, better battery, the 120hz and the bigger screen sizes. Kinda feel like the 16 has become a pretty good buy this year compared to all the previous pros vs non pros 🤔 edit: yup, the being able to pause during video takes is my favourite feature that they announced 👍

That pause feature is so simple yet so handy! I'll use that way more than many AI features - a real-life improvement. The 16 & 16 Plus look great value this year...they really do!

It’s not even really a better battery unless you get the pro max. The bigger battery is to support the 120hz screen. Most battery test have the 16 and the regular pro last about the same amount of time.

I think they’re driving the cinematic mode and other movie style modes for persons who aren’t able to buy loads of equipment but still need the capabilities and functionality of a person who does because not everyone wants to buy a lot of studio equipment and some may only be able to afford just getting one device to start with so that’s what the iPhones are able to do for those type of consumers myself included because I have to add such a device to my wireless plan provider which is convenient for me and I am still able to use studio type of equipment in one device that I ordinarily wouldn’t be able to do if apple didn’t make such great good equipment available for the average consumer starting out. Have you tried the Multicam view using FCP on the iPad? It is brilliant and gives such a professional output - give it a go. I promise it'll blow your mind...it is SO good!

Here's a thought: wait until the feature you want is actually delivered and then see how close we are to next year's event! Chances are they will then promise something else you want and you can roll the whole process forward and not actually buy anything until you really need it.

I have a 'standard' iPhone 15 and I genuinely can't see a reason to upgrade. Even the AI isn't coming anytime soon (possibly restricted at best in the UK). So, I'll be sticking with my 15 which I thought was a worthy upgrade last year (love the colour of my blue variant too). Another great vid Mr. L. Keep 'em coming 👍👍🙏🙏

The difference between A18 to A18 pro was evident during the event. The subtle part which is a big player is A18 pro has larger cache on subsystem. Since the M4 came out, it was evident that the new iphone would carry the same subarchitecture which is THE MOST IMPORTANT: THE FIRST CPU WITH **ARMV9** INSTRUCTION SETS. Remember the armv8 is coming since the iphone 5S (A7). So the armv9 supports up to 10 instruction sets, larger cache and memory bandwidth, deeper prefetch and way way more refined than armv8

Hi David, first time viewer….. found this channel whilst looking over new iPhone videos and I love your content. After watching this video I was in total agreement with your comments. I have to say that I felt really deflated after the keynote as it felt like a repeat of WWDC with so many unanswered questions about the phones like ram & battery size etc. So even viewing some of the specs online it still didn’t seem that clear and which was a shame. I really miss the Steve Jobs just one more thing line which made always made the auditorium erupt with applause for the innovation and industry first features. I am however jumping on the 16 Pro as I like the form factor and it’s a jump from the iPhone 12 so quite a few features will be new for me. Keep up the good work David.

I'll stay with my 14 Pro Max another year. I don't care about AI, and while the better zoom and main camera sensor are tempting, my 14 PM does what I need it to do and does it well. I'd be more tempted for the 16 Plus if they'd at least have given it 90hz refresh. I could get along without the zoom, but I really like the 120hz screen.

I have an iphone 8 256 storage - still works as a phone, camera, watching films etc etc - I work in IT, I constantly set up clients phones, from 11’s to 15’s, no functional difference using apps to mine apart from Touch ID/Face ID. We’re sold the Apple BS every year, in reality they are small step changes and make little difference to quality of life for every average iphone user. Apple marketing hype is expert at rinsing your wallet every 1-2 years. HOWEVER, after hanging on for a further 7 generations I’m going to get a 16 - do you think I’ll be able to tell the difference? Will it make my life better?

Perhaps, would have to be tested, the point behind the audio-section was that now the mics are so good, you don't need external hardware to make it work. Tho i agree, actual professionals probably should not be using an iPhone to begin with. But lets say you run a youtube channel by recording from an iPhone, not needing external mics and still having great audio would indeed be helpful.

Can you shoot straight out to the SSD if you only have USB2? As I recall, that's only something like 480 mbps vs. the 10,000 mbps of the pro. You don't have to buy future promises - nothing says the only time you can order an iPhone is during the preorder period. If you're skeptical, just wait until you see a preponderance of features which make it worth it to you - or wait for a future model which accumulates enough features to make it worthwhile. I've already dropped my storage to 512 GB since I don't carry as much media around any more - and since I'm now backing up to iCloud and syncing non-realtime media to the phone I really don't need 10 gbps at the USB-C port (though I _do_ want the ability to shoot out the USB-C port if needed). I also want that 48 mp ultra wide since I want the higher resolution - when I photographed our bathroom remodel recently the videos turned out a bit softer than I'd like.

My 12 pro has me in a tuff spot. The 16 is a nice upgrade, but with no 120hz always on display (standard for every other company), the pro and non pro models is hard. Pay more for standard features, or save money and get kind of cheated. OT is easy so I can pay any of them off in 3 months if I want, but it feels like I’m getting screwed either way

I am going for the 16 Pro because I do like the idea of being able to be creative on the fly. I got my first iPhone (15 base model) at the end of last year and have been super impressed so decided to upgrade this year to a Pro and then leave it a few years until I get a new phone. I would of skipped this year if Apple Intelligence was available on the iPhone 15 base models but alas not also I have a Mac Mini M2 Pro that I am running MacOS 15.1 beta on and I am pretty happy with the few AI features already available in beta so would also like to have those on a phone. Thanks for the tip about storage options I was considering getting the biggest storage option I could afford but might just limit myself to the 256 GB model. PS I think Apple know that the additional features on the Pro are quite niche and so didn’t make a big thing of them.

hi John - the first year that ProRes came to iPhone was on the 14 I paid £1700 for an iPhone Pro with 1TB of storage and never used it. It was a huge waste of money. If you are buying the 16 pro you'll have super fast transfer speeds and if you are shooting video you can record directly to an SSD - so you don't even need the temporary storage. Honestly, after a year of pretty heavy use, I still have around 50% free on my 256GB 15 PM. I'm keen to start using iOS 18 and macOS 15. Also, if you get the 16 you'll be AI-ready whenever they start releasing it...

I do like the security, simplicity and efficiency of the iPhones but the AI part of the pixel caught my attention. Am still undecided if it’s worthwhile to change just for this or it’s more of a gimmick? The scores for the new pixel appear to be really good but I think if the video/camera scores land around the same area I’d more likely lean towards getting a 16 as am due an upgrade. Hello David, how are you mate? Keeping my 13 mini 512gb. (unlike you I need a lot of memory since I'm not a fan of streaming services...I keep my music library offline on my phone...right now I have 110/115 gb free😇). Apple AI isn't coming to Italy until late 2025 (and I'm being optimistic) so no point in changing, might as well wait for the 17...but I wouldn't change anyway. The portability of the mini so far is one of top reasons to keep it. AirPods Max: missed opportunity, they should have included the H2 chip and the ability to turn them off permanently. Colors are "meh".In any case not a problem for me, I chose the Sony WH1000XM5 and they are superb for my needs. AirPods 4 with NC: hmmm, might grab them in the future, who knows? Take care!

Everyone I know who has used the 13 mini loves it. Oddly I trust the streaming services. I use Apple Music, but most of my library I have ripped so I have the original vinyl and CDs. The AirPods Max 'upgrade' was laughable! Yup, we should have been given an on/off button, a new case and the H2 chip. That would have been a done deal then!

I will be getting the 16 Pro Max in desert titanium with 1TB storage so I don’t have to worry about storage’s for a whole, I’ve already used half of my storage (512GB) and need that head room as a content creator. The event for me was rather flat, the main reason why I’m upgrading to the 16 Pro Max is because of Apple Intelligence as I’m interested in how Apple handles AI especially as Apple has promised that their AI will continue to be privacy focused and everything mostly on device.

For me, that was the biggest jump from the 14 PM to the 15 PM...I could now shoot ProRes LOG footage straight to an SSD - and as importantly...actually get the footage from the SSD to the Mac. It works seemlessly

PS it’s a bloody spicy price over in the UK to your point about the value piece on 16 vs 16 Pro - spending 1600 last year on the 1TB Pro Max last year is probably justification enough for me to think that I need to skip pretty much everything in this as the refresh cycle for me (even if I keep devices for 5 years) is already at about 9-10k (MBP - 4k, iPad Pro - 2.5k, iPhone - 1.6k, Watch Ultra - 800, AirPods Pro - ~220) and I’ve not included the Vision Pro which is probably something I’ll look to get come gen 2 as I’ve been burned before by 1st gen Apple products before…

I keep going back and forth. I like the larger displays of the Plus & Pro Max models. If we compare equally the 16 Plus (with 256gb) and the base 16 Pro Max the cost is much closer. The battery is a bigger change for me. Last year's Plus model had great battery life and reportedly the size has dropped to ~4000 mAh this year (compared to the 4676 mAh of the Pro Max). I won't use most of the "Pro" features of video and audio recording but with the larger display, much better battery and similar price it almost makes more sense to go with the Pro Max anyway. For the record I'm upgrading finally from a 13 Pro Max also with 256gb. Still scratching my head about it.

Currently have an XS. Trying to decide whether to get a 15 pro at £200 rrp saving or 16 pro. I like the idea of 6"3 over 6"1 and better battery but not sure its worth the £200 difference. Any advice would grateful.

hi Aaron - great to hear from you. On the dummy unit I have here the slimmer bezels on the 16s make the screen look bigger than it is. I think by the time my actual phone lands the size difference will be even more notable. I believe there are meaningful batter improvements on the 16s as well. Is there anything I can show you on the videos about my 16 that would help you further?

This is easy to choose. Do you need telephoto lens because you like taking shots in a distance? Buy a pro. If you don’t care about photography, buy non-pro.

It was disappointing for me overall, Dave - colours are nice enough, but it’s nothing really amazing… I’ll wait for the AirPods Pro 3 when they come out as they’re the only thing I have that uses Lightning still. I am losing faith that the Mini 7 may arrive - suggestions their old stock either mean that they are going to can it or release new ones, but ultimately 7% of iPad sales isn’t going to be a lot and they already killed the Mini back in the 13th gen… I really liked that phone and the size, and would have loved a Pro version but, sadly, we don’t have the battery tech as by the time it was down to 79% (and due for a replacement battery), it was needing charging in the day which was just wrecking it too. Think I can probably pass on most of it… apart from maybe having the right colour natural strap for my Watch Ultra 2 - as nice as that black edition is, I can’t justify 899 for a second Watch Ultra 2 just to have the stealth look… can I?

Great video. I agree, the AI frenzy taking place in the market over the last year forced Apple to level up AI capabilities for all of their devices sooner than they intended. Other than us tech nerds, the vast majority of people have not had much meaningful interactions with AI and don’t seem to care really. I hate to say it but Apple’s event will be watched by millions who don’t use ChatGPT and did not watch any of the Google, Microsoft or Samsung AI events. Apple’s event and Oprah’s special will be their first real introduction to AI. So far, the “AI revolution” is stuck in an echo chamber and the money is receding quickly. Apple is not “behind” in AI because Apple’s implementation is more COMPREHENSIVE than most companies. Apple developed their own LLM, they created their own chips to power it AND their on cloud based servers to process the data. I think Google and Microsoft are using Nvidia’s chips, Samsung is using everybody’s everything and ChatGPT is hoping Apple will bring them users. I was also underwhelmed by the event because there was nothing new to ME. I’m still upgrading from my 14 Pro after I created a list of all the hardware based features added since my device’s release.

I always love your reasoned comments Sharon - thank you for contributing so much. It's honestly appreciated. I think the fact that Apple has built their own servers is a huge step forward in privacy - they are in control. I barely use AI and I am in the nerdy tech space, so I think you are right, the average Joe will be using it hardly at all day-to-day. I think the 14 to 16 upgrade will be pretty meaningful. For me though, I am not expecting that much new between the 15 PM and 16 PM - time will tell though.

@@DavidLewisTech thank you David! I love your videos. For months I have been raving about ChatGPT’s ease of use and trying to get my family and friends to use it instead of google search. Not one even downloaded the app, let alone used it. I knew explaining “hallucinations” would kill their curiosity even faster. As a content creator, you need to buy so many devices. If possible, will you do a video on camera control? I don’t understand how the various settings and gestures work. That button goes from simply taking a photo to very complex and layered steps to take professional photos.

hi ya Sharon - yeah, that new Camera Control is going to be a big focus for me. I guess it may take me a week or so of intensive playing with it, but I'll be using it and making a video on it for certain. I think comparing to the 15PM on the same shots could be an interesting way to go actually. I want to get hands-on with it and the new Photo Styles

I'm glad that this game program ai is not yet in the new iphones, if I could do it so that I don't make these updates, where they offer this children's game ai, then it's good, but I doubt very much that I will get it to choose, because they probably make an update that includes other necessary updates, all together and in one. And in general, it has somehow become customary for phone companies to no longer release a complete set of new phones, just like Pixel released its new phone with the old 14 software and Samsung does similar things, that is, Android companies also seem to be selling air and so constantly, apple have even delivered very well and with higher quality than android companies. At the moment, I know and experience these things, I use both an Android and an Apple phone. Thank you for your thoughts!

Hi there - yes I remember Google last releasing the Pixel 8 Pro and promising lots of new features at the point of release. Apple sadly is now following that same path. I never like buying on promises - I just hope Apple keeps their side of the bargain and delivers - even if it's a few months away. My new 16 Pro Max will be with me on release day - make sure to check in to see what I make of it 🤛🏻

In Estonia, I can only start pre-ordering on Friday, September 13, at the moment we don't even know the prices, how expensive the iphone 16 pro max will cost, for example, and it won't be available until September 23. At the moment, 15 pro max 512gb is 1499 eur in Estonia, the full price is 1769 eur, so probably like last year, 512gb 16 pro max costs 1769 eur. So yes, it's great if you can make a video and I can watch and listen to it before I buy! I know it's a big iphone and I have the small hands of a woman, but I still like the bigger iphone because it's easier on the eyes to see it.

once you experience 120hz you cant go back to 60hz… a low refresh rate phone will always feel cheap and buggy no matter of the specs

if we get an SE early in 2025, I assume that would only be 60Hz so I will hopefully buy it to demonstrate on the channel the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz

@archerman1 not true for all people. Example: My personal phone is a 14 ProMax and my work phone is an old XR. I change back and forth between the 120hz and 60hz screens multiple times a day. For the things that I use iPhones for the screen refresh rate doesn’t matter at all. I also went from an older iPad Pro to the new M2 iPad Air and it didn’t bother me at all. I’ll be getting the base model 16 and will be perfectly happy with the size and weight savings over the pro max.

I've always maintained the refresh rate matters more on larger screens and not so much on iPhones. Good luck with your 16 💪🏻

We have essentially reached the physical limitations of how good/fast/capabie H/W can be in a form factor on a phone. Going forward iPhone 17, 18 etc.. will see the same minor incrementals.

yea, I tend to agree - there is not much more a slab in the pocket can achieve is there. What I need is a better carrier & better speeds...nothing to do with my phone! The hardware, be it Apple, Google or Samsung is brilliant. It's very much a personal choice from this point on...great to hear from you 👌🏻

If my iPhone wasn't dying I'd wait to see what software features they actually deliver. As it is my old phone is so far behind that I'm getting a ton of new features I didn't have before anyway. Hopefully they follow through with their promises*. *I'm very skeptical given the levels of AI hype and issues with most AI tools around thinks like racist content generation, mirages, and inaccurate feedback**. I can't see Apple accepting something that's not at least half way reliable. ** My Nvidia GPU came with a free chat sample app. You can feed it a text file and as questions about the contents. It failed to answer yes to basic questions on what words are in the file. Eg is there a horse? It was beyond useless.
