I am touched when I see a simple step-up module from Aliexpress (a cube with a radiator), screwed to the main structure. This means that xtar-link are not able to make a 200W step-up converter completely by themselves. Therefore, they increase the voltage in two stages. And this means: (1) losses&heating, (2) reduced reliability, (3) huge dimensions. Did they at least build in reverse polarity protection? I am not sure about that.

Great video and info. But with this conversion kit, do you HAVE to use a 3rd party router? I can’t seem to find info if we can still use the starlink router on this conversion kit.
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures3 күн бұрын
You can't use the router that is built into the Starlink base, as that is powered by 120 volts and that is not used in this setup. Thus they provide a third party router with the 12 volt power supply. But you can also use your own (as I did) if you have a favorite brand.

The great think about Dockweiler is that you are right on the bike path and can go north or south very easily. There are way better campgrounds for a 'beach camping' experience, but we think Dockweiler is all about the bike path....oh and Plane Spotting if you are into that!!

Thanks for this! Electric engineer here and I would have done that power consumption test the same way. Could get marginal accuracy improvement with a clamp ammeter, but seeing as any errors in measurement are mostly equal between your test cases, for the purposes of relative power use this was perfect. And 50% power reduction is substantial, and mostly efficiency losses, plus the Starlink router which uses more than 3rd party routers.
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures2 ай бұрын
Thanks for that! Yes, I am not an electrical engineer, but I did try to keep as many things equal between the tests as I could. We've been using the 12 volt solution for a couple of months now, and had it on our rig when we went cross country. It's been great, and having it permanently mounted it great in that we just have to pull the cable out and hook up the antenna when we hit a campsite.

Yes! I have the 12 volt solution permanently mounted and use it regardless if we are boondocking or connected to shore power. It's great to have a permanently mounted solution that I just need to pull the cable out and set up the antenna.
@NewMyBrokenJeep2 ай бұрын
@@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures Nice! Could you post up pictures of how you have yours mounted and connected?
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures2 ай бұрын
We don't use a mount for the antenna, we just use the kickstand that is built into it. The way I showed the 12 volt mounted in the bay is how we have it mounted in the rig. We just pull the cable out of the bay and use the kickstand on the antenna and position it using the app for guidance. Hope that helps!

I’m planning a trip to Texas from the UK with the idea of RV boondocking for 2 weeks. Any tips or advice, please?
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures2 ай бұрын
We have a whole playlist of free camping sites.. there are tons of places to Boondock, most are in the West of the US. Where are you starting your trip? Also, refer to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Maps online on where there is BLM land you can camp on for free!
@DavidThornton-m8p2 ай бұрын
@@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures Thanks for replying My Buddy wants to hit up Houston, Austin and Dallas, while I’m more inclined to head west and north. I’m interested in small town Texas to get as close to wild camping as I can without trespassing. I understand navigable rivers are state owned so camping on the side of them is legal, but I fancy hiking in beautiful terrain. Any small towns you could recommend as well, please? 😁✌️ This will all be in a sub 3,500KG vehicle.
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures2 ай бұрын
We are not too familiar with that part of Texas. However, there is a Facebook group called 'BLM CAMPING' where you can post questions like that and people will answer with places to camp they know about.

What is your opinion on tent camping?? concerning the dirt and mud you discussed in the video?
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures3 ай бұрын
If it's rainy or has been raining, it could get muddy. My biggest concern would be the wind, as the rim of the badlands can get some really bad wind gusts, so make sure and check the weather beforehand. We didn't see any tenters there at all, but did see people camping out in the back of their pickups underneath the night sky!
@scottandnan50943 ай бұрын
Thank you. We hope to get to this spot this summer.
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures3 ай бұрын
It’s a great BLM camping spot. Just make sure to check the weather first for rain and wind. The road could get muddy in rain, and if it’s windy and you’re on the edge, it could be pretty powerful!
