I just bit the bullet and bought the Starlink Gen 3. I couldn't set it up at my house yesterday (in the city and too many obstructions), but looking forward to taking it out in the RV and finally having some internet service when camping. My phone always has 1 bar or less when we are out camping, so this will be so nice to have. Thanks for the informative video!

We have been on the road 2 months now and love it. We converted it to the 12 volt power supply so we don't need to turn the inverter on. It's been great...we were at one campground in the trees and had a hard time finding a clearing, but found a little spot and got coverage..though not as quick as a clear sky would have been. Good luck and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

THANK YOU GUYS for this! We've been considering getting Starlink as a backup for our home internet (we both work from home) and getting the RV plan for future RV life.

So glad you found this helpful! We like using Starlink and the Generation 3 has been pretty easy to set up and get going. ..and it beats the three hotspots we used to carry!

Did you leave the cable outside overnight? My first thought was critter damage. Like some car cables are eaten thru because the newer ones are sheathed in some soy based material.

We did leave it outside that night, but the make didn't look like critter damage... When I fed the cable out from behind the RV it was through a metal frame, so my guess is I pulled to hard and it got caught a couple of times on the frame, as there were a couple of them all near each other. I was just glad that I could get a new one overnight from Amazon..and now that they sent me one I will have a spare!

Best thing with gen 3 is you can buy better cat 6 cable that works the same that is wayyyyyyyy cheaper. I needed 75ft of cable for my camper and since starlink only comes with 50ft and i could only find 50 or 100ft of the starlink cable for sale for over $100 i did some digging and found out any cat 6 poe cable will work. Jumped on amazon like you did and got some fancy stuff for $35…… love my starlink gen 3 for my camper

YES !!! We didn't realize previous generations required a special cable! We were lucky that we were able to just buy one off Amazon and get back online!

No problem guys! I have no idea how it compares to your setup- I think you have yours on a pole, correct? I want to investigate one for generation 3.

that damage on the cable is probably from rabbits, i have indoor pet rabbits and thats what it looks like when they manage to get to my cables

Do you think? I just thought I might have damaged it fishing it through the metal frame behind the TV.

Very good DYI video!! Do you think you will get rid of your Hot Spots? What is the $$$ difference if you do? For my Internet usage I usually can find a local library within 30 minutes of my camping spots. That handles large uploads and ZOOM calls etc. Have you guys been to or done a video on Quartzite? I'm going to try to go in January. Wonder where to plan on staying. Or do you just wonder around until you find an open spot?

Yes, we got rid of our hotspots. We had three that were getting old (none of them 5G) and the price up updating them was crazy. The monthly prices were going up as well, so the monthly cost was going to be about the same as three hotspots, and the hardware purchase was cheaper than upgrading the hotspots. We have been to quartzite several times..usually for an overnight when we are heading east. It depends on what time of year to go..in winter its crazy busy, you have to get a permit (there are BLM kiosks at most entrances) and then you just find a place to camp. Lots of groups organizes place to camp, by brand of RV, common interests, etc.. look up 'Magic Circle Quartzite' to get a an example of one area to camp in!

Rather than pulling out all the coutner drawers, would it be easier just to use electrical extension cords?
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures 6 ай бұрын
The plug on the inverter is behind the outside TV which backs to the cabinets. The only way to reach hit was either take the TV off, or remove the drawers.....
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 6 ай бұрын
Just buy a cheap 3ft or 4 ft extension cord and let that be your inverter power for anything you need to plug in outside. Then keep all the starlink stuff together in case you want to plug it into a power post or someone else RV.

Good Idea. I'm still figuring out the best place to store the equipment. I am thinking of having the power supply and router permanently mounted in the bay under the rig, and then I just need to pull the cable out for the antenna. I can then jump between the two plugs in the bay, inverter or shore power... but am worried about if that bay will be too dusty/dirty...

StarLink’s monthly recurring costs scare me.

With the RV plan you can put the service on 'hold' via the app and it finishes up the month you are currently in and then stops...we found it better than our hotspots, which I have to re-activate when we start using them.

How much do you have to pay monthly?
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures
@JamesandPaulsRVAdventures 6 ай бұрын
It's 150/mo for the RV plan, you can pause it at anytime.

So my camper is at a permenant spot parked.. i looked at alot of youtube videos and let me say these guys so far have had the best video explaining everything and actually showing the install on their rv. So i found one techy guy that does alot of reviews and at least for situation i was able to go with residential service which is $120 month and you can go between 10-20 miles roughly from the location you put in as your residence and setup. So when we done camping in the winter months i could take it home about 15 miles away and use it or i can just change to my home address….. this guy said he was able to change his service address from every campsite he went to when he was on the road traveling and it saved him $30……. Eventually starlink will probably fix that loophole but for now its still working so just a thought. And its still pay by month or pause it for a few months from my understanding its the same thing just more expensive for the “rv” feature
