What a wonderful year that was, 1982, WC Champions. I watched that Italy-Brazil game which at the end I knew that after winning that game no other team could stop us. But man, it was a nail biter all the way to the end. And Rossi and Conti, Rossi the finisher and Conti the heart, mind, soul and muscle of that great team. Without Conti we don't win. His fitness and stamina second to none. And then there was Zoff. The oldest goalkeeper to win a world cup and at the age of 40, he played like a 20 year old, sharp reflexes like a cat. It was a well deserved win.

Rossi was not implicated in match fixing ....he even scored twice in that match. The accuses were husty and inaccurate, as usual for sport justice in Italy. Bearzot (1982 Italy's coach) believed him, and that's why he kept lining him up. It was more than football He was already and totally a Juventus player in 1982..... Juve bought him during his disqualification, waited for him, and let him even play 3 matches towards the end of the season, before the World Cup I'm 49, and that match against Brazil is my first ever totally coscient life memory....and all what happened afterwards. As a Juve fan, they were magic years, but 1982 World Cup was something else for every italian....there was a magic that there wouldn't in 2006. 1982 is the most loved italian team of all time, the most iconic. and 1982 World Cup is the by far the greatest ever ... let's no joke: Zico's Brazil Maradona' Argentina Platini's France Rummenigge 's Germany Boniek's Poland the Italy we know.. Spain who played at home all that before the hypersponsoring that would later corrupt football ....back then, it was pure passion Unforgettable years

This was the first World Cup that I got to see a lot of on TV (thank you, PBS and Soccer Made in Germany’s incomparable Toby Charles), and it was heartbreaking to watch Brazil fall out against Italy. Of course, that Brazil side has, since then, been accorded the agonizing acclaim as perhaps the greatest team to fail to win the World Cup, along with the 1954 Hungary, and 1974 Netherlands, teams. I do think that a number of observers offer a fair counterpoint to that estimation, in their arguments that in 1982 Brazil had a wealth of fabulous talent, but also had at least two weak links. Those critics focus, first, on the goalkeeper Waldir Peres, when the squad selection puzzlingly excluded Émerson Leão, widely regarded as one of Brazil’s greatest goalkeepers ever, and by 1982 already a veteran of three World Cups, in two of which he had been the starting keeper - including 1978, in which he had been the team captain. (And, for good measure, he would be back on the squad for the 1986 World Cup.) And Peres certainly did make some goalkeeping gaffes in the 1982 tournament. The second object of criticism is the striker Serginho, commonly seen as lacking the refined skills of his teammates on the national side. In his case, there’s still great controversy as to why he was included on the squad, instead of Reinaldo, a striker who, like Émerson Leão, is commonly considered one of the greatest Brazilians ever at his position. Brazil’s coach, Telê Santana, said Reinaldo was not available because of injury. But Reinaldo himself has said he was healthy. The true reason for his absence from the 1982 side remains obscure, but it was, very likely, genuinely consequential.

Again and again Italy is the team that make the history of football with great players and thrilling matches. Brazil was given a lesson that day in Spain, a real lesson of football where also defence is critical for the final victory. After Spain 1982, Brazil started to improve their defence and finally Brazil produced great defenders and good goalkeepers.

No matter where we went, we would see older couples, husbands and wives, sharing their food and wine. However, when Italy won again, things changed. Yes, we went out, got drunk, and had a good time, but the innocence of those elderly folk sharing of themselves just for the joy of it, was long gone.. and yes we talked about it. p.s. great video and great memories.

10:50 I call bullshit on the argument that "soccer died that day" and the fact that defensive soccer killed fantasy. Italy scored 3 goals, where's the defensiveness in that? One header from the far post, one shot from the top of the box, and one tap in on a rebound. There was actually another tap in from another corner scored by Giancarlo Antognoni wrongly judged off side. Italy scored 4 goals against the fabled best Brazil ever: where is the defensive play? they did not win 1-0 and park the bus for 85 minutes, they kept scoring one goal more than the "best' team. The sad truth for Brazil was that their defense system was embarrassing to say the least. If it's true that "Rossi had three touches and scored a hat trick" (not true, Rossi had another two occasions he missed badly) what does it say about the Brazilian keeper? like the russians and the scottish before them, the italians realized that they just had to shoot on goal to stay alive, and shoot they did. Unlike the others, what Italy did was not to let Brazil crush them in their box but they kept counter attacking at every turn. 1-1? 2-1! 2-2? 3-2!! Moreover, the "bad" team beat the world champions Argentina 2-1, the semifinalist Poland 2-0, and the finalist West Germany 3-1. defensive team? Italy had never scored that much in a tournament! Maybe, just maybe, the Brazilian team was a little out of touch with what football actually was and the self indulgent band of primadonnas had a rude awakening. In the following years all those talents (even Socrates) ended up playing in Serie A so that, after learning humility in Spain '82, they would also learn learn some real football.
@TheSportsFiles-mm1kg4 күн бұрын
I think when Socrates says football died that day, he is referring to the old flamboyant style of Brazilian football. You're correct about the perception of Italy winning this through defence being wrong. They exploited that terrible Brazilian defence really well. Like you said, they should have scored at least 4 goals.

82 was another era. We were coming from a football where the standard tactic was 4-2-4, even in Europe. Italy was probably the first major league to transition to a more rationale approach. It's not by chance that Italy has the two defensive world records: most matches (12) and minutes (1168) without conceding goals.

Actually many don't know that usually the Italian national team's been less defensive than Italian clubs . The thing about Italy always being a defensive team is a myth born in 1938 world cup when Italy won against Brazil in the semifinal . basically 1) Italy was one of the first great teams to use the 3-4-3 when others used often 4 or 5 striker . 2) Italy had the 3 strikers returning to the midfield when the one attacking was the opponent . Those two things in an era where the offside didn't exist were something which limited the goals scored both by you and your opponent . This style of playing assumed the derogatory name catenaccio . Name many people today use without knowing it's basically what every team does today .
