The format for this world cup is shocking. The groups were pretty unfair due to the seeding, meaning a non-seed that beat a seeded team would likely then have to play them again just to confirm it before progressing, unless they could at the very least earn a draw against the other seed, and extra time was played if there was a draw. The Hosts weren't seeded (the only time the Host wasn't seeded when seeding was used) (even Qatar were seeded). Even weirder the seeding occurred before the qualification had actually completed, with Turkey ending up seeded under the assumption that Spain would beat them. Even more bizarre the four group winners (Hungary, Brazil, England and Uruguay) went into one half of the draw, whilst the runners up had the other half (Yugoslavia, W Germany, Austria and Switzerland). This created an uneven route to the final.

@@TheSportsFiles-mm1kg Would be an interesting what if to look at what could have happened if the format had continued. Not that easy a task, as the 58 world cup was unseeded with a draw based only on Geography; and later draws had only top seeds, half of which went to the hosts and defending champions. But might be possible to guestimate.

One of the greatest maybe the greatest ever comeback in football World cup history. No Team ever turned it into a win when trailing with 2 goals in a World cup final. The 1970 comeback of Germany against England could cope with it considering the high temperatures in Mexico which made that comeback so extraordinary.

It's def one of the greatest for sure. You can make a strong argument for being number 1. Hungary was so strong as a team. Plus, it had such a huge impact on Germany as a nation, too.

As a German, I have to say that Hungary should have won. Of course, I am proud that Germany won, but at that time Hungary was the best national team of all time.

I think part of the early goals for Hungary was the carelessness of German keeper Toni Turek. He was known for not really taking his enemies seriously, sometimes he didn't even move for a shot

No one hiding in the midfield jungle here, coasting on their previously made reputations, as so many in the post 60's did. I am convinced that the real 'golden days' of football were the 1950’s. At that time it really was the players who mattered, but today it is all tactics, posing etc.

Everybody knows that Hungary had by far the best team in 1954. It was a mix of arrogance and bad luck that lost them the final.

Nice video with a few details I didn´t knew before. But you could have talked more about Germany or Germanies matches. Yugoslavia had the better team, especially a great keeper. Austria was thought to be much better than Germany with players like Ocwirk or Stojaspal. They were for many people favorites for the second place behind Hungary. And the German team itself: Good that you mentioned Herbergers tactics. He knew that he had a chance against Hungary since the 6:3 in Wembley. He was in the stadium an saw the poor Hungarian defence. Herberger was even more confident after his second team managed to score also 3 goals in group stage. And in the final you had on the pitch Kohlmeyer who made many mistakes in the tournament but managed to make a few goal-line clearences in the final, Turek with the best match of his life, Rahn who was no clear starter until the Yugoslavia game but proved Herberger right and of course the best captain of all time Fritz Walter who cared for the whole squad till the end of their lives.

As a 61 year old HUNGARIAN-CANADIAN feel like crying over this video!! A bit angry a bit bitter how its even possible to win against almost every team and losing to GERMANY in Final!! This Final in Bern killed Hungarian Football!! Never again Hungary managed to be at the TOP of the World!! They beat Champions and lost to a team they already beat 8:3!! So its still a Heartbreaker many friends from other Countries told me HUNGARY was the real winner THE GAME BEEN STOLEN so was the Cup!! Germany played dirty and won dirty!!

Your feelings are understandable. I think this Hungary team is the greatest never to win a World Cup. They were dominant for years before the final. I think the soviet communist regime really damaged Hungarian football as well as this final.

@@TheSportsFiles-mm1kg I grew up in Communist Hungary so this game was a TABOO we could never discuss it out in the open!! Only behind closed doors people often said it was fixed and rigged game!! I only knew the final score once the Communism fall and already in Canada!!

ONE LAST COMMENT! Puskas really upset the Germans at their first Match by telling them in fluent German that he can trick them with his left foot and also right foot he can score from any distance and score real easy... so the Germans knocked him out and was injured for a long time!! Hungary paid a heavy price for PUSKAS careless comments!!!

Stupid format honestly. We saw the same with the stupid playoffs in 58 when Czechoslovakia won 6-1 against Argentina and had something like +7 goal difference but Northern Ireland went through because they won in the playoffs 😂

Even if they used pervitin which is still in dispute, it was not a banned substance back then. And if you really think Germany doped but the Hungarians weren't doped you are pretty stupid.
