You can’t charge an electric lantern on the side of mt Everest or K2 but you can run a lantern on the same cylinder that the stoves use.

Another good fire starter that can be made from common household items is Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly and Cottonballs. Coat the cotton balls with Vaseline and pack in a small container. I use an old 35mm film container. To use just pull it apart to spread-out the fibers. A few sparks from your ferro rod and you have a flame. If you have enough Vaseline on it you can get a 3-5 min flame. It doubles as a first aid item. Can be used on your lips for chapped lips or coat bandage as not to stick to wound.

It's good to have both in your camping equipment isobutane or white gas and rechargeable LED lanterns. Use the isobutane or white gas outside and LED in your tent. If one fails you have a backup light source.

Sterno stove, IF you can still find it, was $6 back in 2014 but a lot higher today. One does not have to use the firebox sticks in order to use it. The Sterno stove is nice for light duty use. Aluminum can melt at high temperatures. Bending metal is called annealing, which can make it brittle. A better burner than the sterno is the Trangia. Or Redcamp. You can actually put two of those in there for added heat! Firebox is built to last a lifetime. You can use many different fuels in it. It is impervious to most levels of heat too. Including but not limited to: Sticks Mini Sweedish Candles Alcohol Stoves Charcoal Esbit fuel tabs. And with an optional kit, you can even use butane burner in it. Downside is that it is a bit on the heavy side. You get what you pay for though. A question about the sterno stove - can you bake on it? Can you use the fuels listed above without problems? Firebox has a zebra billy pot that is designed to work with the firebox to bake with. Can you do a comparison video with the different kinds of fuels actually being used to cook with besides heating water? In both? I have the Firebox with all the extra goodies and the Nano too. Just trying to keep options open ya know.

I use white gas lanterns while camping. They usually work better to light up a large area. If you only need light close up, the battery one works just fine.

Please not: butane freezes at -1°C, and a household freezer will easily reach -10, so the gas in the lighter will become liquid very quickly, but the low latent heat of vapourisation will allow for the butane to become gas very quickly again.

The Sterno folding stove is EASY if you learn the trick! HERE IS THE TRICK: (1) Start with it ON ITS SIDE. This makes the back easy to insert between the tabs. (2) Before inserting, fold the Bottom wire in and inch or two so the wire on both sides will fold into the slots. (3) Insert the back between the tabs on both sides. (4) Fold the bottom wire into the slots. (5) Close the door. Viola! If you try to set it up holding the grill side up and attempt to fold everything together, it will be a lot of work. Gravity will work against you. You will feel like a scene from an Abbott & Costello movie. Trust me. Lay the box ON ITS SIDE and you will see how simple it is. BTW, as a test as a wood burner, I put mine together and added a piece of aluminum flashing on the bottom. I added some wood and lit the stove. Once I had it going, I put on a 2 quart stainless camp pot with 2 cups of cold tap water. It started to boil in 4.5 minutes. Light windy, breezy conditions. About 65 degrees temperature. Wood was dry. I was pleasantly surprised at the results. I found I added more wood through the top than the door. It reminded me of the braziers used by Revolutionary War reenactors.

I haven't smoked since 2006 but I still carry a bic everywhere I go. Why? Honestly, why not? If I need backup lighting to find my flashlight. If I need to melt something. If I need to light someone else's cigarette. If I need to douse myself in gasoline in protest it would be super embarrassing not to have your own ignition source.
