Zippo Emergency Fire Starter (Live Use)

I just ordered one of these myself to keep in my pack / survival bag. I was wondering if there was a way to test it with something other than the included wax sticks. I mean say you run out and you have no way of getting more of those. Maybe a test with the flint lighter say with think strands of cotton ball impregnated with vasoline, or maybe seeing if it will light well with a piece of ferro rod etc.
