will this work as a container for a citrus tree?
@SoilMatesofGeorgia
@SoilMatesofGeorgia 4 күн бұрын
I would think so, but you'll need a bigger container and it could get top heavy as the tree grows. Susy had a small lemon tree she had in one of these, but it didn't make it through the winter in Georgia.

@@SoilMatesofGeorgia Thanks for the anwer! 'm planing on stacking two garage totes to make a container for a citrus tree, i'll cut the bottom of one, then put that one on top fliped down so they fit nicer, i Will use some tools and silicon, it Will have more root space and weight so the tree wont fall as easily. Hope it works!

How do you know when its out of water?
@SoilMatesofGeorgia
@SoilMatesofGeorgia Ай бұрын
It doesn’t need to be empty before you refill it. So, we usually top it off every other day. When it’s over 90 degrees and sunny, you’ll see it takes longer to refill. You can’t overwater it if you’re just refilling the reservoir

I’m so excited to try this! Does this work with seeds and young plants with short roots or do you need to wait and plant them when they are bigger? I guess I’m wondering if the water will wick all the way up to the top of the container.
@SoilMatesofGeorgia
@SoilMatesofGeorgia 2 ай бұрын
I didn't do it this year, but I've had success planting seeds for cucumbers, mustard greens, cantaloupe, and watermelon in these containers. I don't think it'd be bad to water some on the top in the first couple of weeks as long as you can do it in the first half of the day. I try not to water later in the day because the surface doesn't dry out enough before nighttime and I believe in encourages mold. If you are only watering through the tube, it is probably worth refilling it every day on hot days.

How do you handle drainage though? Did you have to drill holes in the bottom?
@SoilMatesofGeorgia
@SoilMatesofGeorgia 2 ай бұрын
For this one, we put holes on the bottom. We have another style where there is just a single hole on the side. You can see it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sH6tZpVnh5Zsa6c. Putting them on top of bricks is an easy way to elevate them some if you're going to put holes in the bottom. The totes are pretty heavy when filled with soil and water.

does it take out the rhizomes of bermuda grass?

It doesn’t get too deep like a real tiller would, so I’d guess it would only take out shallow rhizomes at best. I didn’t have any Bermuda in the areas I was working it.

This is my first growing season with a compost tumbler. Do you keep yours in a sunny location to help with the breakdown? How long does it take for you to get usable compost? Do you have to dilute the compost tea you collect?
@SoilMatesofGeorgia
@SoilMatesofGeorgia 3 ай бұрын
Yes, ours is in a sunny location, just because it's a convenient place. It really varies on the time it takes depending on how balanced I have the mix and what season it is. It breaks down a lot faster when its warm, but what I put in during the summer isn't ready until the fall. I don't dilute the compost tea, but it's fairly diluted already from rain running through it and around it into my collection tin. Good luck with your first growing season!

We put some old dry cow manure in ours a couple of times. I don't think it is necessary, but I think it adds more good food for the plants. Most of what we use is from the kitchen or yard, like leaves and grass clippings if you don't use herbicide or pesticide on your lawn.

So much water draining indicates you have too much water and your compost is probably aerobic. You need to cut back on the water you add and leave the lid open to help the compost dry out. Close the lid, spin or mix it and open the lid. Your compost should be damp like a moist sponge. Your compost probably smells. When you leave the lid open, bury any foods like meat scraps so animals don't smell it. You should only get drips and drops of water, if any, and no accumulation. No worries if you take it all out. Compost starters are over rated and decomposition will start quickly. Your peppers started in the refrigerator!
@SoilMatesofGeorgia
@SoilMatesofGeorgia Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It doesn’t smell, but I can see a difference this year using less water than I used to, mainly because it’s in a different place, not because I meant to make a change.

@SoilMatesofGeorgia

Sorry I didn't see this comment before. I think it doesn't wash out because it's not getting running water over it. It's packed fairly firm and only has a small notch to allow water in. That seems to keep it in place. Mine have stayed in place for a few years now, even with moving them around.

Yes, but we've found it's better to put a bigger hole on the side with a short PVC pipe and a false bottom. It takes more work to set up, but the soil drains better. This works too, but needs to be on bricks or something so it can drain better.
