I love that you are living out your dreams where you're at. It's always nice to see your videos again. For some of us considering EM with no research experience, how much does this matter? What do residency programs look for in applicants? I've only got grades(at least I'm top half in my class if that counts for something) and campus leadership roles like ER club leadership and MS1 tutoring. What should I be thinking about at this time?
@ERdoctorMike2 күн бұрын
Research isn’t as important in emergency medicine. Leadership is great! Showing an interest in EM is best. Being a normal human is what we look for.

@@ERdoctorMike TYSM for your response. I’ve always known that it’s what I want to do, but worried about the experiences, ways to stand out without necessarily doing things I don’t care so much about to check a box. I know that I don’t like research and doing research to check a box didn’t feel right, so that had me a little concerned. Appreciate it.

One more question from a curious oms. Would a COMLEX only applicant have issues matching into EM in today’s market? I’m sure having USMLE def helps and is recommended, but how much of a difference wud it have when applying? Saving time and money by only focusing on comlex level exams seems nice. Thanks again doc
@ERdoctorMike10 күн бұрын
You probably only need COMLEX.

As someone with lateral arch issues I love my Birks and their 3/4 insoles make it so I can wear other shoes as well. What I can say is that it takes me 40-60 hours to break mine into the point where they start to become comfortable. Probably double that before they are comfortable enough that I forget I am wearing them. Finding the right size was a bugger though! Fresh from the store a 42 feels best but a broken in 41 fits better. I wear a Regular/Wide and do wish a 41 extra wide was a thing though. That extra 2mm on the 42 is nice but they are just too long after broken in, which puts my arch in the wrong spot.

Great video Dr. Mazur. I had a question about the soap process in relation to EM. Friend of mine is worried about matching into EM (low stats for comlex and usmle), so he’s dual applying with IM this up coming cycle. He really wants to match EM, IM is not ideal for him. Would it better for him to just apply EM only? Worst case scenerio he can soap into an EM after non matching right? Or is that unlikely? Thank you.
@ERdoctorMikeАй бұрын
I would just apply EM. Apply broadly 70+ programs. Shouldn’t be too difficult to match.

Hello Dr. Mazur, you come across as a nice person who will be a great physician. My nephew and his fiancée have just wrapped up their third year and are doing away rotations. He wants to go into orthopaedic surgery and she into internal medicine and cardiology afterwards. They have been working insanely hard to match into their desired residencies next year (they will be doing a couple's match). Both are top students who have honoured their rotations and crushed their USMLE step 2. I enjoy your videos as I can have an idea what they are up against. Keep up the good work!

I failed last year and had to repeat. Just had the mid year exam, and it was AWFUL. They ask the most random questions. Like more than 50 percent is rogue stuff that we've not even learned or was mentioned once. Things we were told not to worry aboout. I feel like my school constantly sets us up to fail. We only have mid year and end of year exams. If you fail, you repeat. There's no resits. It's so hard. I hate it. I wish we had block exams like you had. God. I would kill for block exams. It would definitely take some of the pressure off, especially as a repeating student. Anyway, sorry for the rant. Haha

I wonder if the algorithm understands deep enough to consider your performance in medical school and then avoids matching great students to subpar residency programs? If that makes sense?

The algorithm strictly tries to put you in your number 1 program.
