If the Green Party had of been any good, two things they could have done was, get rid of Fluoride and Choline in the water which is proved to lower IQ and the second thing was to reopen all the train lines through out Ireland, cars off the road. Question what percentage of GDP pays off the National Debt 😮

Amazing.The stupid stunts took up the rail links from Dublin to Athboy which ran from 1865 until the brainless stunts decided that we would no longer be reproducing in Ireland and would have no need for connecting the midlands to the Capital.

@meadowm174218 күн бұрын
Talking absolute tosh. The trains you are looking at in this footage were Drumm trains - electric run on batteries invented by Dr James Drumm, an Irish man - my late father being one of his scientific team and we're built in Inchicore.

That's really interesting. It looks foggy with some smoke mixed in. It was something of a miracle to me that it was possible to build the Luas so many years later on the same line. Around 1:29 appears to be the iron framed wooden foot bridge later at St Benildus (1966). It was the best part of the school week to cross to the pitches. Great video. 1:29 The footbridge later at St Benildus fields (1966)

Thanks, nice to read it brought back good memories, I only managed to see the cutting just after construction began on the Luas.

Wonderful, Thank you. Moving beyond outrage at the closing of this line, it should be re-opened from Charlemont all the way south with upgraded DART. Re-lay the proper track and use the newly ordered mixed-energy-source rolling stock. High frequency Drogheda, Maynooth & Hazelhatch lines do not require DART + but instead should utilise newer versions of DE rolling stock.

1 minute 35" in and that bridge is the one that used to connect Balally parish with St Benildus College. It gradually fell down by about 1980. When the planks rotted and fell off we used to walk across the central metal girder to get across. Just for dares as there was a filled in section beside it that you were meant to use properly. I think the bridge skeleton stayed there till about 1984. The bridge's stone/metal pillars stayed there much longer till the rebuild.

Thanks, that's great info. People have told me it was like a swamp looking down below from the bridge! Unfortunately all traces of the bridge seem to be gone now.

Thank you for sharing. I could identify with the lad in short pants and long coat following his mother [?] across the line from the Up platform to the Down platform at the end of the Foxrock platforms. This must have been a Leopardstown race day as the race day track was in use. To think i was a young lad playing somewhere down the road that day not realizing what we were about to loose. Tragic. The name, Todd Andrews, is still infamous in south Dublin for his insane decision to close the Harcourt railway at the very time it was needed most; when suburbia was spreading rapidly outwards from Dundrum.
@jimwoods955123 күн бұрын
Not insane really… he had to close several rural lines for obvious economic reasons, but due to the gerrymandered rural / urban political realities then as now, he had to slaughter the baby.

I have heard it said that at a time when there was a mass closure of rural railway lines the harcourt street line was closed just to show the government was prepared to close city lines as well, a sort of sacrificial lamb if you like. Not sure if there is any truth in this but I think there very well could be as the closure of the line made very little sense.

It's a pity the once mighty railway metropolis that Waterford once was has now been reduced to an almost wayside halt, with only one of the old bay platforms in use for ICR trams. Urgent climate action suggests reopening the line to wexford/rosslare for commuters, freight and foot passenger as ferry access will become important once again when we start switching back to ferries from low cost air travel (ie when air travel is carbon tax out of the sky).
