As a driving instructor perhaps you can answer a question I have about instructors and students. In the area I live I have noticed instructors advising their students to pull up and park on the offside kerb facing oncoming traffic then pulling off again when clear. I have also noticed instuctors allowing the student to drive a short way on the wrong side when clearing some driveway entrances. I was never shown this during my lessons which I have to admit were some 50 years ago. Is this now part of the usual instructions and tests.
@DevilsHand07
@DevilsHand07 Сағат бұрын
@@johnkitchener9931 yes, one of the New manoeuvres in the test is to pull up on the opposing side of oncoming traffic, when it it safe to do so of course. I believe it replaced the well known Turn in the Road, or in my day the infamous 3 point turn. I personally don’t agree with this as a manoeuvre, just my opinion should have left well alone.

@DevilsHand07

@@fredlenz4743 Good question, most times they can come in unison. Where this is not the case you would react to the first whether that be markings or signs, sometimes markings can be covered by queuing traffic. Common sense should prevail, you should be paying attention to both.

@@DevilsHand07 I live in South Africa where, if outside of the Western Cape, road markings are like hen's teeth. Road signs are less notoriously absent, but the ignorant will gleefully ignore posted stop street signs, claiming there were no road markings. That might be the case in Northern Ireland but not in the rest of the UK where there is no legal obligation for pedestrians to ensure their own safety, that responsibility falls primarily on the motorist as they are the ones who present the danger. It is an offence for motorists to be careless or inconsiderate but there is no offence of careless or inconsiderate walking As you point out, they Highway Code permits pedestrians to cross wherever and whenever they choose (unless the council has issued a regulation under section 46 of the Road Traffic Act 1960, which I doubt was the case here). The freedom to walk on the highway is a right that has existed for many centuries and remains the case today, in spite of the best efforts of motorists to restrict it. Crossing at junctions is often the most convenient and safest place to cross as traffic is generally travelling more slowly.

It seems to me that "social contagion" is really a thing! You only have to look nowadays just how many people don't indicate, no forward planning, ignore red lights completely, mirror signal etc., drive like idiots and so on. These "trends" seem to escalate really quickly and they spread even quicker among certain groups of drivers that are also struggling with delusions of grandeur, driving a German car or a Range Rover (an Indian car) doesn't make you special. As I've said many times before a lack of policing on our roads also adds to the problem, there's no one telling people they're wrong and issuing fines or points. The police now rely on the public and their dashcams for evidence of wrongdoing so the police can cut costs even more. We, the people in my Cotswold village, asked for a copper with a speed gun to stop people doing 50mph plus on a straight section of 30mph road. We were told there was no one available but we could go to Gloucester and be trained in the use of a police radar gun, report our findings, and the police would issue a letter saying "very naughty". This is a reason drivers do what they want on our roads.

I keep saying this but I wish we could go back to policing from when I was a kid. In the 80s I'd see a copper somewhere at least a couple of times a week and we always saw one at Chichester cattle market where us yoofs used to meet up in our beat up Cortinas and Capris. The police would give us advice and sometimes a warning if we were doing something daft but this was proper community policing. I remember making a front spoiler out of galvanised sheet metal and it was more of a snow plough type thing with sharp pointy bits everywhere but I didn't get a ticket from the coppers I got a laugh and a friendly warning to get home and remove it. I'm lucky if I see one copper a year nowadays and that's normally when they're setting up speed traps. They don't even turn up for theft/break ins now, you report it, get a crime number, and never see the police. Shameful really!

While I don’t agree with passing in a dangerous manner, I have to take issue with your “there was no reason to pass” comment, you have no idea how long the journey is that the motorist is undertaking? I have a two hour commute if I didn’t pass people that are hesitant, that are driving below the speed limit, or are just not making appropriate progress (and that includes most learner drivers) my journey would take an extra 20 mins. And FYI I was a motorcycle instructor and a driving instructor in my youth so I understand the behaviour, however your only time pressure is your next lesson slot and your route can be varied accordingly, other people may have more pressing issues to deal with.

Why some of those roads shown have 20mph limits just beggars belief. A dual carriageway with a 20mph limit?! Before these daft limits came in, the desire the some drivers to have to overtake was far less as everyone else was driving at a more sensible speed. if you're not capable of driving a car safely at over 20mph on these types of road then you shouldn't be driving, and certainly not a position to set speed limit policies. One thing I do disagree with you on one of the clips was the Volvo driver not stopping for the kids stood on the pavement. it was far safer for the Volvo to carry on up to the give-way line and then the kids could have crossed safely behind the Volvo. I'm sure the kids were waiting for the Volvo to pass anyway, and they were stood well back from from junction. We're not even sure the kids were wanting to cross anyway, they might have just been having a chat on the pavement. This is far safer than the Volvo stopping to force the kids to cross in front of them, and this might make the kids rush and not check clearly if the other side was clear. The safest thing to do is clear out of the way of people who may want to cross so they can do it on a clear road. The rest of the Volvo's driving after that point was pretty grim though.
