What rods are you guys using for the Tuna? Hard to know how it would hold up if you didnt hook one but ive heard of a few 12wts getting busted on yellowfins.
@dorsaloutdoors14 сағат бұрын
Some folks who fish em said you could get away with a 10wt and thats... a lie. The biggest issue is that tuna run down, not out; so it puts a fly rod in the least advantageous position of lifting. We found even a blue water 14wt wasn't really that great. It was more of waiting for the fish to tire, and then hand-cranking them up. Recently, George has tried the "line-lift" with Jack Crevalle, which really seems to work when a fish is sitting under the boat (you point the rod at the fish, and literally lift the whole rig, carefully judging the line strength). So maybe that would work with a 12? Regardless... nothing works for Dan.

Great story. I just recently started duck hunting with my 1 year old lab and 23 year old son. One thing I’ve learned. It’s not about the ducks. It’s about spending time with a great dog, family, and friends.
@dorsaloutdoors13 күн бұрын
It's funny -- as we film the finale of the series right now, we actually talked about this. The car rides, the camp coffee, the breaking down the day... those are the biggest wins. The ducks are just a side benefit.

I’m invested in this story man. I’m not sure if you have ever heard of Taylor Creek in Theodore Alabama, but they do bird hunts and guys volunteer to take their retrievers over there for those hunts. It’s a great training opportunity and a great way to network with some good retriever owners.

Great video! How many weeks did you train with Riggins before his first hunt? I have a 4 year old golden who shows natural instinct like this but I always figured it was too late and he needed to be trained young.
@dorsaloutdoors20 күн бұрын
Thanks! We procrastinated too much if I'm being honest -- starting in November and doing the first hunt late December. (Through that time we did the shotgun test, daily retrieval practice, etc) What made it work was Riggins' instincts. It was really more about unlearning some behaviors that were perfectly fine as a family dog, and adapting those to small pond duck hunting. With each "checkpoint" it ratcheted up the pressure/activity, knowing we were going to have a chance.

Feel your pain! Second😂 week of Aug 2024, Full Moon, Venice, 111 heat index, guide does not believe in lunar tables. In three days, partner four Black Drum, five Reds and me ZERO! Partner casting a shrimp fly and I’m casting a chartreuse dragon fly imitation ? The guide highly recommended…with no barb…the last day the lunar table said peak feeding 0735 to 1025. Partner caught his fifth on the schrimp.😮Me, I had managed to snatch the fly out of mouths of three slots and lost a big bull in the rollers at the mouth of a ditch and the gulf when she made a run straight at me. I could not strip fast enough to keep the slack out. That’s when I discovered the barbless hook. At 1100, the bite was off. That afternoon neither of us could tempt anything. Yep, it was a Curse.

This was awesome. I started training my chocolate lab named Ruger at 2 years old. We both went duck hunting for the first time in 2020 and this video is exactly how it went.😂 2021 was the season he got his first retrieve and from there it was on my shooting skills got better and he got more patient and quiet. I actually went hunting with some guys i know and they complimented how well he behaved compared to some professionally trained dogs. I hope you and Riggins get that first retrieve its the best feeling in the world when every comes together. Good luck brother 🤙

@dorsaloutdoorsАй бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! It was really cool to get a win and has us excited for what's next.
@claysnwingsshotgunningАй бұрын
Amazing story thank you for sharing. if I may as a shooting instructor offer some advice, slow down, the shells that you are shooting are probably pushing out pellets close to 900 MPH, so use your eyes first lock on the bird's beak or something outstanding on the bird, like a color on its neck or head, then get into your gun, match the speed of the bird with your swing of the gun while looking at nothing but the bird and trust your hands to get the gun where it needs to be before pulling the trigger. Don't rip off three shots in a row without having some type of visual connection to the bird. Riggins will thank you for it.
@dorsaloutdoorsАй бұрын
Really appreciate this. And it's funny you mention the "slow down" part because I've been doing a lot of clay work this summer and that's been the key. Not rushing the shot, pinpointing an area, and pacing. Now, not going to boldly proclaim it's all "fixed" haha but there's a chance.

Genuine question. What do yall do to be able to go and do this? It’s a dream of mine.
@dorsaloutdoors2 ай бұрын
To be honest, it's a crazy mess of a story. About a decade ago, we bought a camera off of eBay to bring home some of our memories. (At that point we were doing DIY, sleep-in-airport trips that could be paid for with a tax refund and some travel points hacking). That camera ended up helping us land some cool images, that then got us in touch with a really talented filmmaker (our Belize video has the full story). That then led to us to dreaming up fishing films produced by ourselves (still, hacking travel costs, staying in $30 a night ecolodges, etc) which honestly? busted. We got rejected all over the place. We then re-calibrated, and focused on stories that we cared about. And there is where we started to get a little bit of traction. A photography gig here, a social media spot there. But still was a trickle and we just kept trying new things. For the next 5 years, we'd take one trip a year that we all could afford, but started to be able offset some travel (airfare) with some of the video/photo work we were doing. It truly wasn't until this project here, when we were able to leverage our talents to go and experience a full fly fishing lodge. It was a dream come true for us and we're extremely blessed and humbled by opportunities like this. But it hasn't been overnight. It's been an iterative 10 year process, with an unreal amount of setbacks.
