I was running Monterey with Rx580, after a swap of graphics cards. I could not boot back to Monterey, I initially thought I knocked the NVMe on the next lane. However, two weeks later tonight, I had tried numerous methods to reinstall Monterey but nothing, always stuck at 1/4 of the Apple loading screen. I'm trying to install Catalina now :)

@@terrenterren4856 I haven’t had any such problems with mine. I also used an RX 580 to get to Monterey and then just swapped the GPUs and no problem. Is the W5700 known to work in a different machine? Could it have a modified VBIOS? I had that problem with my RX 580 initially and had to get the original VBIOS from TechPowerUp then flash it in Windows. After that it works fine in macOS.

Thanks for your reply Douglas, no, nothing at the USB-C port. The funny thing is I can use the w5700 with Mojave OS - with limited functions. So far, no luck with Monterey, nor Big Sur or Catalina. Perhaps something about the graphics Card. Its a new HP reference W5700. Considering it works natively with Mojave, it really should with the Monterey. I'm seriously scratching my head over this.

Works great EXCEPT that when the Mac boots with anything plugged into the USB C, I get no display. Once booted the port works fine. I have a Sandisk Extreme 1050 MB/s external SSD. I didn't actually show plugging in the cables, as I thought talking about the devices and setup would be more interesting to someone doing this. The connections are: 1) Plug the optical audio cable into the Digital to Analog Converter from the Apple TV's optical audio out. 2) Plug the RCA cables from the DAC into the stereo receiver's aux. inputs. Set the receiver input to Aux.

If you already have OCLP installed, then you only need update OCLP and use Software Update in Settings to update to the latest OS. Make sure your GPU is supported in Sonoma, though (Navi I and Navi II are not). I use a Navi I Radeon Pro W5700 in my Mac Pro, so I am staying on Monterey.

@@douglas_edward Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond. My GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 4 GB (flashed). What you say about updating sounds almost too good to be true - if I hadn't seen your demonstration. I think it would be wise for me to stay on Monterey. When you say 'Update in Settings', do you mean that I should allow the OS (Monterey) to carry out the update? The whole process used to be so tricky. I use a 4k BenQ monitor and it doesn't show the Apple boot screen even though it is flashed and works with other monitors - something about the drivers according to the people who flashed the GPU. Apparently, OCLP now shows a boot screen. Still can't fathom how easy you made it all look.

The lossy vs. lossless discussion is interesting. I noted in the video that my use of Bluetooth with the same stereo sounded flat and lifeless while AirPlay sounds full and rich. I suspect that I have older Bluetooth transmitting equipment is the problem. However, I had understood that AirPlay was compressed but lossless, using Apple's Lossless Audio Codec. A quick Google search shows conflicting information, but it appears that the original AirPlay standard, as supported by this Apple TV, is lossless, while the newer AirPlay 2 standard will transmit lossy compressed audio sometimes. It goes over your home network (WiFi and or LAN).

Really just two ways of doing it. I had a Bluetooth receiver on the stereo but had problems with signal strength even across the room. Walking between the transmitting device and the receiver made it cut out. WiFi is strong throughout the house, so the transmitter and receiver don't even have to be close. Also, the sound is full and rich via AirPlay. I've just never got Bluetooth to sound good. It's lifeless and flat, probably because I am transmitting with older BT equipment. Bluetooth is also finicky with pairing. AirPlay never requires leaving the player app to go to settings, turn Bluetooth off and back on to try to get it to pair, then back to the player app to play.

The RX6600 is a great card, and flashing it is a one-time deal. Once done you have a card that can be used in the Mac Pro and transported to a Windows PC. Don't you know someone with a gaming PC? I used my son's to flash an RX 6600 XT and then an RX 6800. The company I work for has some older workstation PCs in reserve for "just in case". They would have lent me one with no hard drive for a weekend so I could have used it to flash a GPU.

What about getting rx6800 to work with oclp and Sonoma in a 2010 cMP? Navi support??
@douglas_edward5 ай бұрын
For now I am stuck at Monterey. Ventura and Sonoma GPU drivers require AVX2 CPU instructions, which no classic Mac Pros can have. OCLP will need to patch the GPU drivers for Navi. All of the Apple computers that shipped with Navi GPUs had AVX2 processors, so very few of us (classic Mac Pro users) need this patch. I hope they will patch it, but we aren't a high priority.

@douglas_edward5 ай бұрын
The RX 6800 XT is a Navi 2 architecture GPU. The driver in macOS Sonoma for Navi and Navi 2 requires AVX2 in the processor. No processor supported in the classic Mac Pro has AVX2. OpenCore Legacy patcher has not yet patched the GPU drivers for Navi or Navi2 in Ventura or Monterey. The last OS that doesn't require AVX2 is Monterey. SO, that GPU cannot be used in macOS beyond Monterey.
