Thank you for sharing your experience in this video. For my part, I have had some considerations to make this same transition, but I must tell you that on a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 I have the OCLP and the only thing I don't like is that the boot time is very slow and that has made me not leave the OC Martin Lo on my cMac Pro.

Seems I've read about others having a slow boot time with OCLP. I haven't experienced that. Monterey boot is about a minute.

@@douglas_edward likewise. I installed Monterey (with a clean install)with OCLP and the machine runs very well. The machine is giving me the option to install Monterey 13.4.1 which I'm told I can do(and others have) fom System Preferences, but I am concerned about losing Bluetooth, Wifi, and USB. So Monterey is fine for the moment.

Unfortunately for me its the end, Adobe Premiere and After Effects 2024 don't run anymore on a Mac Pro 5.1 because there is no AVX2 instruction set support on Xeon processors. After 15 years of loyal service and upgrades I have to use my Mac Pro 5,1 as a server or something. Davinci Resolve 18.6.4 runs very smooth on this machine however.

You made this look so simple! I have a similar setup to you: Mac Pro 5,1 (upgraded 4,1) with OCLP (0.6.7) but Monterey is at at 12.6.5 and I would like to upgrade OCLP and Monterey. Would following your example work for me or is there more to it in my case?
@douglas_edward4 ай бұрын
If you already have OCLP installed, then you only need update OCLP and use Software Update in Settings to update to the latest OS. Make sure your GPU is supported in Sonoma, though (Navi I and Navi II are not). I use a Navi I Radeon Pro W5700 in my Mac Pro, so I am staying on Monterey.

@@douglas_edward Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond. My GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 4 GB (flashed). What you say about updating sounds almost too good to be true - if I hadn't seen your demonstration. I think it would be wise for me to stay on Monterey. When you say 'Update in Settings', do you mean that I should allow the OS (Monterey) to carry out the update? The whole process used to be so tricky. I use a 4k BenQ monitor and it doesn't show the Apple boot screen even though it is flashed and works with other monitors - something about the drivers according to the people who flashed the GPU. Apparently, OCLP now shows a boot screen. Still can't fathom how easy you made it all look.

Sure. It looks like these came with Big Sur, from a little Googling. I don't know if you have to actually install Big Sur and then upgrade to Monterey to get them or if they will come in with a fresh install of Monterey. To get to them, right click o the desktop, then pick Change Desktop Background. Under the Apple folder there is a Desktop Pictures folder. In that folder they're under Dynamic Desktop.

Older Son sold me his M1 MB Air, which is on Ventura. Having used it for a few weeks I see no reason to update the Mac Pro. GPU drivers was the reason to update to Monterey, but I see no need to take the cMP further. Until I get bored this winter and need to try something new, that is.

I did a fresh install of Monterrey with OCLP with an 1 TB SSD in my 2012 MBPro. Once I installed my software my fast boot time, became 4-5 minutes. I have been able to live with that for having a bulletproof Montrerey installation on 11 yr old hardware. I don't know why it takes so long to boot either, but, I have verbose turned on and it definitely hangs for seconds multiple times on multiple points in the boot process, then tries again and again, until it gets past that point. It hasn't failed me in over 6 months of daily use, so I am leaving it alone.

Hi Doug & thanks for the video. I went ahead and switched from Martin LO's version to OCLP as weell. However, I've ended up with painfully long boot times, 4-5 minutes, which wasn't the case with Martin LO's version of OC. Also, my system firmware version still states 144... & not 999... like yours does, any ideas why? I have the same cMP withan RX 590 (8GB) and a dual nVME with Monty & Venty installed. OC is installed on a separate SSD (SATA) with Mojave on...

I don't know what is causing the long boot times. That hasn't happened to me. I have Monterey and Windows 10 on separate SATA SSDs. Have not tried Ventura. I wonder if the patching needed to run Ventura is causing the boot time.

That's great, GPU flashing is a messy business. Douglas, I'm confused about two things: 1. at the beginning of the video, you mention that Monterey broke support for your nVidia Kepler card, so I would have expected to see you perform the move from M. Lo to OC Legacy under BigSur, yet in the video you do it under Monterey. How is this possible, if the card was not supported under Monterey to start with? 2. at the beginning of the video, it sounds like you are keeping the nVidia Kepler card in the 5.1. But at 4.30, OpenCore Legacy detects a Polaris GPU. That's more AMD than nVidia, isn't it ? Thank you in advance.
@douglas_edward Жыл бұрын
Sharp observations! I'll explain. This video shows the second Mac Pro that I switched. I didn't record the first one. The first computer had the RX 580 and Monterey. I switched OpenCore to Legacy Patcher, then removed the 580 and installed the GTX 760, then ran OCLP's root patch for Kepler driver. OpenCore provides a basic display driver that works on the GTX 760 for boot picker and the like, so it can be started up before the drivers are installed. But, it won't have hardware acceleration. Mouse pointer movements aren't quick or smooth. I now have the 580 in the second computer, the one used for the video.

I would like to have the 3 systems on my boot page. Did OCLP might be helpfulll ? Any suggestion ? Regardss.
