Can we think about it this way also? There are 3 points of contact with the boat: seat, foot rest, and hands on oars. By keeping the knees down we lock the foot rest and seat together; this makes us more stable in the boat and the boat more stable.

I’ve been curious as to what your bio rower athletes do when they attend an indoor race, how do they transition to the concept2 erg?
@AramTrainingКүн бұрын
Good point. They do well on linear ergs. Technique wise, it is a down grade. So you can essentially row like a monkey on a linear erg, and this is always easy. The other way around, namely uprading from the linear erg style to true rowing technique and still performing is quite a step up, though rewarding.

Thanks so much for the extra video with the knees down explanation! Makes so much sense, I've been trying to use that que for back health and tap down room but the logic behind it has eluded me. Thanks Aram!

Anecdotally speaking, most of the coaches I've spoken to (and I would agree) there is a roughly a 70 to 75 percent correlation of linear erg performance to water performance. There are always individuals that are marginal erg performers but are very difficult to beat in a seat race on the water. Many variables immediately come to mind as to why linear erg performance does not perfectly correlate to water performance such as blade mechanics, balance and as you often eloquently point out the lack of the arc motion of the oar. But I never took much consideration towards stroke length. After watching this video I would conjecture that a taller rower would have an advantage over a shorter rower on the liner erg not just because they have useful long levers used to accelerate the flywheel but they can spend more time under acceleration. I would guess this time under acceleration advantage is less on the water because the increased arc path of the oar is less advantageous near the catch and the finish. It seems to me that academic rowing centered research is rare. So often I have to go to research from other sports to gain insight into best performance practices. It's nice for a change to get objective quantified information from rowing centric research. I look forward to Mr Cardoso's future findings.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqPLe6Z7iJxrsLM&feature=shared Hi Aram, we're a 4- team trying to find out what we're doing wrong here. We have only been out maybe 5 times in this boat, normally we row in 4x. I'm the stroke. I follow your video analysis of rowers, could you kindly (grovel, grovel) do one for this?? It's at 8 am in Alicante Port, Spain on a chilly December morning just yesterday. Merry Christmas 🎄

Now we know, linear ergs don't float, but the Biorower most defiantly could. As for stroke technique, linear ergs can be deceiving, you can pull longer strokes by leaning further back at the finish with your hands up at your neck, but try and do that with your feet out of the straps on a linear erg and you will end up on the floor. You cannot really do that in the boat or the Biorower without messing up the the stats.
@HealthforGrownups15 күн бұрын
Incredibly fascinating pictures of the skeleton in movement… wow…. But one thing I missed a bit (of course from my medical pov) is that the linear ergs do reward physiological dangerous techniques by giving you better scores if you go really hard right at the catch (not healthy if you’re not positioned very well) and pulling up to the neck… but it’s a bit unfair to compare a concept2 to a biorower… it’s like comparing a BMW 3 series to a 7 M… (Btw: how come that everybody on that chesterfield is optically gaining 10 kilos..🤔🤔😜)

Would being more relaxed, as in having relaxed and loose shoulders, help with bringing the load and stretch into the upper back? I am quoting from my coach here.
@AramTraining15 күн бұрын
Not quite. Being too lose does not help as well.

It's difficult entering rowing at the university level, because one moves through novice, intermediate, club (and into senior) quite quickly, and there is so much information to be absorbed in that period, and much of it is conflicting. For instance, I have heard one should be patient at the catch and feel for a good connection before driving, but then I have coaches saying "don't hang around at the catch; use the elasticity you've built up during the recovery and immediately drive".
@kranmaster21 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I keep trying different things at the catch, and even though it feels best or "right" when I have my shoulders relaxed and they move forward at the catch (as you suggest), I had nothing to confirm this intuition before this video.

EXCELLENT video Aram, going to be showing this to my crews. Would you mind explaining the knees thing you mentioned in a second video? Besides knees down together I wouldn't know what you are referring to
@AramTraining15 күн бұрын
Thank you! The "knees down" refers to the early stage of the recovery, where your pelvis should rotate forward significantly. Essentially: bring your upper body forward into its final forward lean angle, while your knees are still (almost) extended. This is not possible for many, however, just the intention has great effects on your body weight distribution.

Isn’t it the case that the force is transferred from the shoulder to the handle in order to lever the boat past the blade locked in the water rather than from the handle to the shoulder?

Aram, another very important video, thanks. For a future video topic, what should the coach look for specifically in each individual rower to make sure the rower is making the connection to the water and achieving suspension. Oftentimes, the rowers are wearing sweatshirts, or loose clothing and you can't see the musculature at work. So whatever details you could provide would be appreciated. Again, thanks for this invaluable service.

But when you talking most rowers...they don't have this kind of machine. And when you say square arms..most of us can't do it on a basic rowing machine. Got that one handle bar and that's it. Extend arms and that's it. No nice movement like with this machine. It would be nice to have this kind of rowing machine but all I see is so many moving parts..which is great and it's what you need...but what happens when you gotta repair machine ?Does it have lifetime warranty ?Even that these day means nothing. And I finally saw difference between 20 and 30 strokes. All the others I've seen they don't really show monitor...just talk talk talk. Even though they row...it's not the same as this one. But true they didn't row on this kind of machine. Concept 2...which is what my next aim is because the water rower they bought years ago just isn't cutting it. And one day maybe this kind of machine.

However, the nature of social media has groomed us to seek streamlined information from digital sources. I am glad I spent the time viewing one of your videos a few weeks ago, because it was information dense and contextually comprehensive. I now tune in to at least one of your videos daily.
