this is so fundamental & yet rarely made explicit to rowers. this video goes beyond the how to show the equally & if not more important why. thanks!

I think all rowers could benefit by spending time on a fixed seat rowing boat. How to use your body correctly to generate power. Without using your body you wont go very fast. The pull of the oars just feels different. I spent years on a fixed seat rowing boat. On a fixed seat boat 80% of your power comes from your torso. USE IT! Not to use 100% at the catch? You should be using 100% at the catch! All your arms are doing is maintaining momentum. Now I have a scull. When I am using my torso correctly the stroke feels different. The pull in my oar handles dramatically feels different.

Also my coach keeps telling me to step down and push hard as soon as I catch. I told him I do but not 100% in the beginning because that’ll make me open my back. I save the hardest push when my blades are almost 90 degree to my boat and i push, swing and bring my handles towards my chest, and watch the split goes down and down, and the boat feels like a rubber band. Is that the right sensation? If yes, how should I tell my coach? He’s very nice and sincere…btw I just stroked a quad women’s 60+, and we beat 40* quad, mixed quad, some men’s quad, and many of the juniors. The boat really felt like on a rubber band during the recovery and drive. It felt really good.

A couple thoughts: the "hardest push with your legs" will almost naturally come mid drive as your legs are in a much better angle to perform than at the catch. The "rubber band" analogy makes sense, you could also describe it as a lethargic undynamic acceleration

Hi Aram a young man in my rowing club wants to buy your erg. I told him I’ll introduce him to you via email and he should join your Saturday rowing club. His name is Amogh. Thanks for the help
