I've been looking through A LOT of "Graphic Design Books" videos. This is the best one I've found yet. You do a good job of presenting, showing the book content, explaining what each is, and why you like it. Excellent. Thank you!

So underrated 😭 im really glad i stumbled across your video, i was planning to make my first vision board this year but the vision was quite hazy for me, since a lot of the visionboards people make are just pretty images stuck together 🥲 As a creative myself, i found your advice of looking at it like a project moodboard is simple yet mind blowing 🤯 Im gonna make one soon, hope this video reaches more people! 🎉💗✨

I totally feel the same way about Canva now especially the template/hand over of assets to clients so they can update copy as needed vs them coming to me for every single update. It also makes it more of a collaboration which is vital and has brought repeat business. I still can’t stand the interface or even being able to select a text box lol but I’ve learned to embrace the app even though I was very stand off forever. I’m so glad to hear this reflected by another human ❤❤❤ - wonderful content and info! I love your format too!

Thank you for your advices. About the part "record our thoughts and wins", how can we do it? I mean, it's like our screen shots. Honestly I never took back to review my screen shots. And I have a ton of them. Do you know some good tips about that to tell us? I wrote some of my thoughts about my plan in my phone's note but as I told I didn't review them for the second time. And my note is on the edge panels! It's totally reachable. It's frustrating that I don't know how to manage this basic things. And I absolutely will need this skill for my freelance career in the future.
@JanelleHugel

I can totally relate! For years I would have notes in a bunch of places and random screen shots of things and never look at them again. A few years ago I discovered an app called Notion (which is totally free to use). It basically starts out as a blank page (kind of like a word document on steroids) but you can build whatever sort of structure you want to keep all of your notes and planning and to-do lists and anything else in one place. I highly recommend picking one platform and then spending some time creating a system for yourself so that you know that every time you want to make a note about a certain kind of thing you know it goes to one place, and you can actually find things again. I'm going to be making several vids this year about how I've set Notion up to help organize my life and business, so I hope those will help!

I was an in house designer for awhile and tried to go freelance … the business side of it was super scary and the taxes even scarier. Totally, it can all feel really overwhelming! You are exactly the kind of person that made me want to make videos. I've actually been really wanting to make a vid about taxes as a sole proprietor but I've held off because it felt super niche and I didn't know if anyone would care. Maybe I'll bump it back up the list come tax time. :) So glad you found me, thanks for saying hi!

I've recently gotten into collage, and one of the best presents I've recently gotten for December 6th (that's when Santa comes with presents in Poland) was a huge stack of old National Geographic magazines. A subscription is nice, but for the same price I got like 5x more material to work with.

Hi Janelle. Great Video. Do you have any recommendations on what websites an aspiring designer can use to build an entry level portfolio?
@JanelleHugel
@JanelleHugel Ай бұрын
Thank you! I know it's pretty ubiquitous, but I personally think Squarespace is the best platform for simple sites. I've built dozens of sites on their platform (including my own portfolio) since 2008, and I just don't think there's a better platform for code-free, WYSIWYG editing, especially for portfolios. I've also been really impressed with their customer support over the years, so that's a bonus. Hope this helps!

My circle of friends andI have given up the embarrassment about lists. We create a Christmas list on Amazon and stick stuff on that all year, then the first of November we send a reminder email with the link to each other. Yeah, books are amazing and usually not things we would buy for ourselves.

I am an elementary school art teacher. My aunt and uncle asked if there was anything I'd like for my CLASS. I asked for a manual wall-mount pencil sharpener. Used to be in EVERY classroom, but no longer. Cheapy pencil sharpeners just chew up your pencils.
@tinksky7354
@tinksky7354 Ай бұрын
Hi! That is a good idea, I might have a suggestion you might like more that your students might like more as well! Maybe if you could find some silent electrical sharpeners (with a pencils only sign obviously) or maybe have a box of handheld ones that don’t leave the classroom that could be some ideas as well! Or maybe have those off to the side if some students prefer handheld ones over the wall ones! (as someone who used to use the manual wall sharpeners, my hands were always cut up because of bumping the wall because of how close they are to the wall, I don’t want that happening to your students as well. Maybe you could get a padding for the wall or an extended one but I remember me and my classmates would have hurting knuckles from them)
@j.rinker4609
@j.rinker4609 Ай бұрын
@@tinksky7354 I don't really like the electric ones, and we have some of the cheapy handheld ones that break a lot. If we had a manual one for pencils, I would get the nicer handheld ones out when we used colored pencils.

@thisnthat42

These are all really great ideas but I think we should normalise asking the person if they would like it before buying it. Some of these items artists swear by but either I personally do not want or I already own it, like some of those books so I wouldn't want someone wasting their money but there are other art books that definitely come under that "would love to own but can't justify buying" category.
@JanelleHugel
@JanelleHugel 2 ай бұрын
That is a totally valid point! I’m definitely one of those stubborn people who feels like directly asking someone for a list is kind of defeat and would rather furiously scribble a note any time something comes up organically in a conversation all year, but I definitely agree that the best way to know what they already have or want is to straight up ask. That’s also why I like the idea of gifting subscriptions to things that they need to have to pursue their creative practice. Things that are annoying but necessary to buy yourself, but if someone gifted or upgraded for you would feel like a treat.
