The 455 ruled in the oldsmobile back in the 60's
@Tom-yj6mt5 сағат бұрын
I have a 71 Olds 442 with a 455. Use to street race it back in the day. Was quick for it's time. Definitely had the torque. Olds engines are built for torque. Horsepower is another story. Yeah, you can get some HP out of them but it's expensive. They have a heavy bottom end and don't like high RPM's which is where most engines make their HP. I pushed mine to many times and due to the olds engine liking to hold oil in the top I spun a rod bearing. Rebuilt the engine and then the cam went flat. Now due to health conditions I'm not sure if ill ever get it going again.

I'm not sure that you need forged crank and pistons for that if it's not at high rpm for long. I was able to get 370hp at crank with milled and home done cleaned up vortecs circle track cam with just under 0.5 lift performer rpm intake and stock bottom.r I eventually damaged a piston using nitrous but it would have been making well over 450hp at that point. Notched he bore around the valves and added ring gap. Went ok for a 305, revved close to 7000 rpm. If it's sustained high rpm, boost or high comp than forged stuff be good idea but for street or the odd drag race with careful tuning might be ok with stock stuff

ived ran both stock and base modified headers intake carb changes my best 400 had its peak at 6200 rpm and held a 5-8 min pull ... my now current 468 big Chevy same compression but bigger exhaust......... top end Pontiac cant outswirl a Chevy head design is very tough.... it can pull volume metrics faster into the bore

1:30.. it is worth it..because later ..(it never ends) you can add a turbocharger ..make sure to gap the rings for boost when you do the pistons/rods .. 2:25.. was..turbochargers make anything worth it..🏁

The wider valve covers on the 454 are more attractive. In theory, at least, the splayed valves of the 454 should breathe better. And, some later versions offered four-bolt main caps - ideal for forced induction. I don't think that Olds, Pontiac, nor Buick offered four-bolt blocks - but I could be wrong here. I have a Gen V 454 BBC in my 454SS , and it has four bolt mains. (it is a GMPP crate motor, as the OEM Mark IV jumped timing and bent the valves). Interesting video. It seems that more aftermarket speed parts are available for the Chevy, than the others.

Having a KAUFFMAN-BUILT 467" dropped into my 1970 GTO Convertible in Spring 2025. Have it all kitted out, with .600" Hyd Roller, Ported KAUFFMAN D Ports (310cfm), JE Pistons, Eagle forged steel crank and rods...and, in a nod to Nostalgia running a 3x2 TRI POWER with 3 HOLLEY 500cfm 2bbls. Also doing an SD PERFORMANCE lifter valley kit to strengthen the area, 1.65 rockers, ARP head & main studs/4 bolt mains (studs). KAUFFMAN runs a video of a similar motor (albeit they're running LESS cam and LESS cfm head flo: 290 vs my 310), and that motor makes 571hp and 580+ ft lbs of torque. The dyno curve is still going UP at 6,000rpm where that 571hp is taken from. And yes...shes a 4 speed car. Having a custom-built MUNCIE from a guru in Wisconsin. Likely running 4.10s in a beefed 12 Bolt - tire height will "knock it down" to aprox 3.90. Its gonna be and INSANE street motor. Cannot wait !!!

I never had a 400sbc but remember the people who did had issues with overheating. Several friends took the cranks out and put them in 350s. They claimed the 383 made more power than the 400. I stuck with Pontiacs but I know my Pontiacs cost a lot more to rebuild. Back in the day I could have built 2 chevy engines for what 1 Pontiac cost me......or at least according to friends who built chevys

Since the EPA outlawed methylene chloride, there isn't a single decent paint stripper in the USA, in comparison.. It's garbage and companies should be prosecuted for false advertising as paint stripper. In less than 15 minutes, methylene chloride strippers would have paint just falling off of steel.

My engine builder built a SBC 383 9.8-1 compression, stock Vortex aluminum heads, mild roller cam. QJ carb with headers. made 425 HP and 514 TQ. The power is all in the heads. Put RPM performer hands on the 407 Pontiac and you will see similar numbers.

Just bought a 67 tribute car w modified suspension, 4 wheel DB, AC, 5 speed manual, and a fuel injected 455 from a Catalina. A literal rotisserie restoration starting with a 6 cylinder Lemans. In many ways it’s better than a real GTO. Most real GTO’s were driven hard and beat up and souped up over the decades. The 6-cylinder Lemans cars were likely babied and just kept clean and stock. Perfect canvas to build a car that outperforms a stock vintage GTO

I have owned them both back in the days.Both were stock when I had ran them.Basic upgrades were headers,intake,ignition and carb.I can tell you one thing for sure is the 455 had some serious torque.Felt more torque with the stock 455 then the stock 454.That being said the 455 would stop pulling around 5300rpms where as the 454 would pull to about 6000.I did my best at the time with the timing curves.

This is just silly.. by your thinking , you really shouldnt "waste your time" unless its a big block ? I mean... why do a silly thing like a 350 when for similar money ypu can just build a 427? Or 454? .. I ,for one, would be quite happy with a 360 h.p. motor. Not to mention , as a daily driver its likely to get a bit better has mileage with a little les cubic inches. So your seeming to put it down as a waste of time and money is WAY of the attitude and objective of the hardcore, passionate true "hot rodder" .....
@LSxHunterАй бұрын
I mean, if you making a strictly race car, displacement wins. I drove and road raced a 305 for years, car was still a ton of fun. My daily is over 400hp and I get bored with it fairly often. Coming off of being in 600+hp cars, it's all about perspective and goal.
@kennethlee1031Ай бұрын
@LSxHunter One my latest is a very original 78 G10 Chevy van with a 305 . Ill be building that just because itll be cool having a quick old van with its original motor. Its not always a dollars , horsepower thing. My 305 is stock about 145 hp.. without pulling the block I should be pretty easily be able to double that for under a couple grand. Ill be thrilled with that. With a speadbore I may just still have decent milage . Same with my 70 Camaro SS .. If i want to just build a beast, the block I start with will be FAR more important.

From Chief Engineer of the 301 Turbo - originally designed to run on premium unleaded with synthetic oil but GM Mandated vehicles to run on regular unleaded - they would have been more durable with that - ad intercooler - FI - better head design Bigger Turbo etc. in the future it would have been World Class by the mid 80's and on 🏁🏆😎

Maybe show people how to pick a cam and heads for their application. I think a lot of people get pretty confused doing that and use more of bro-logic than science. I hear people talking about duration and LSA, but rarely do people talk about valve events while considering head flow, rpm and displacement
