I'm not sure that you need forged crank and pistons for that if it's not at high rpm for long. I was able to get 370hp at crank with milled and home done cleaned up vortecs circle track cam with just under 0.5 lift performer rpm intake and stock bottom.r I eventually damaged a piston using nitrous but it would have been making well over 450hp at that point. Notched he bore around the valves and added ring gap. Went ok for a 305, revved close to 7000 rpm. If it's sustained high rpm, boost or high comp than forged stuff be good idea but for street or the odd drag race with careful tuning might be ok with stock stuff

I partially locked out my centrifugal advance, deleted one advance weight spring, added weight to my advance weights, high fire coil, opened the plug gaps, installed a Quick Fuel 450 and an underdrive crank pully. I probably sacked a little hp, with the smaller carb, but torque from idle to 4,500 increased a lot. now it burns rubber and accelerates😂 always starts on the first bump, idles beautiful, runs cool... the works. I have yet to advance the cam 4°, true duals, and may treat it to a summit 1102 cam. As the engine only has 67k origional miles on it, that is as deep as I am going to go into it. It is night and day from when I first bought it. I'm extremely happy with it.

305's last a good while smacking em to 7 on the street.. hell, they last a good bit seeing 7 plus regularly balls out on the dirt track too without forged anything for that matter. Oil supply with a windage tray and baffled pan is crucial at that end. That's just a hobby class. Racesaver 305 Sprint car class the motors crank out 470-480 horse on a solid lifter 10.75 compression. Brodix "French Grimes" heads no porting allowed. They are forged. Not an exotic setup. Very basic. Those engines see 7 or 8k, occasionally the tach strikes 9,000 rpm coming out of corners. But here's the catch, they just last and last. You'll get 3-4 seasons out of it, no problem. 358 class you'll see 600 horse but it gets more cost prohibitive by a good margin, and the engines don't last all that long.

It is an interesting vid. A lot of people have 305s, in these 80s and 90s classics now. If you do not have an HO or votech 305 (most people don't), you can do a lot with it. First off, I looked it up. They come with 0:1 compression, from the factory. You can advance total timing, A LOT, without causing knock. Delete a spring, and add heavier ignition advance weights. All of a sudden, it wants to burn one tire off. Shit can your quadra junk, and put a holley 450. I went from a 600cfm carb to a tunable 450, and it responds like a 350. Add an underdrive crank pully. You will also need to get a smaller alt pully, so you have voltage, at idle. That makes a very big difference, and for cheap. I have yet to upgrade to electric fan and water pump. My clutch fan weighs as much as a bowling ball, so I know there will be very noticeable gains, there. So, you definitely do not have to be sad, just because you have a 305😂

I race an 87 Monte Carlo SS in NHRA Stock Eliminator K/SA class. Im putting 419 hp with a stock manifold and a quadrajunk. The heads you want/need on a 305 is the 081 center bolt (unported with multi angle valve job only) not the 416s. Im using a custom ground Lunati solid flat tappet cam, JE pistons. Getting 400 hp out of a 305 is the same as a 350, that extra .200 bore isnt going to make much difference (mines .060 over). I spin my engine to 6500 rpm and those 081 heads outflow most every double hump head @ .391 / .410 lift which is what a stock cam has. The flow numbers on your 416 head are around 165 cfm @ .391 lift which is why you made shit power. Ive put more 350s, 289, 302, and 351 fords, 318 and 340 mopars, and pretty much every other 305 on the trailer so many times I cant remember them all. If you cant get 400 hp out of a 305 you need to work on lawn mowers.

I have a question... why is a 5.3 with a 3.78 bore considered kewl but a 305 with a 3.736 not? You do know that 305 Vortec heads, though missing the 350 style ports, still flow like LS or Fast Burns, right? Why build one? Same reason you build a 5.3- because they are cheap and most importantly thay can handle boost WAY better than a 350 because of the thickness of the webs between the bores- dugh. And also because like you said, where do you stop? Another reason, you can keep low end torque lower thannon a 350 yet make it rev for any HP level you want making tranmission builds cheaper. You can also stroke it with a 350 crank and make an extremely light rotating assembly that will easily rev high. The magazines used to do it with ported S&R Torquers. Any engine can be built to perform, why do you think import guys build 4 bangers- and they aren't light like they were in the 90s anymore.

@@jarrellwilliams2562 well you can bore a 305's cylinders out + O.O3O" over the size it is stock for larger than stock valves- although you may want to less like +O.O1O" or something if have stock real small valve, this shall clean up the bore and unshroud valves a bit and its enough to make improvement, but what you really need is deck hieght to a zero deck measured at each 4 corner pistons it should come to 9.O25" stock, or pistons down the hole O .O25" about the thickness of your pinky fingernail tip if you got thin ones like me. so you want to take that O.O25" off the deck surface and have a 9.OOO" deck hieght and then use some great gaskets like felpro and get it O.O39" thick although you could get a O.O4O" also. this gives you perfect quench, i would say oh 500 dollars for both maximum on the high side. or you can hot oil bathe it and spend more but its worth it to replace cam bearings and clear out the coolant and oil passages real good and run some high pressure through there to make sure to get it all out and use wire brushes that reach deep and blow all that crap out of there. Now you'll have a great oiling system to last a long long time. i would just get a dart 400 small block with 350 mains and use your 305 crank in it and bore it to 4.165" use your 305 heads . put in an XR282HR comp roller cam or magnum 280H10
