Excellent series, thanks for uploading. And just by the way, a little mention for Penny Bostock who plays the student Marion - what a pretty girl and very good actress. Shame she seemed not to do many more roles, as far as I can see?

Really good series, and based on a great novel by David Lodge. But interesting that 'virement' wasn't in The Shorter Oxford. Just looked in my Chambers, and it's in there.

"Look, it is funny." "You sure?" "Yaeh." "How?" "There is a laughing track playing." "Oh. You right." "I know." "How?" "I laughed for that Track when it was recorded." "Oh. I see." "Yeah." "Funny." "Yeah. Funny coincidence." "No, the Show." "The Show as a conincidence?" "No, the Show is Funny." "And the Coincidence not?" "Why should it?" "Because I laughed."

When this came out my then g/f who was fluent in German laughed out loud when Robyn says her goodbyes to the German men. Sure, fairly predictable but still funny.

This is the show that kicked off my huge crush on Sarah Alexander. Later on, she would go on to star in Coupling and Green Wing, two of the funniest British sitcoms ever made. What an incredibly talented, funny and beautiful lady.

Actually there's a study that shows that placebo works, even if the patient knows it's a placebo. If I remember correctly, in 50% of the cases.

The real Henry Ashworth (Anthony Way) got a lot of publicity out of this and he did appear on many TV shows unlike what is depicted in the movie. Like all Boy Sopranos, he lost his treble voice around 1997-8. I saw him on some TV show. He mentioned that the casting team did not want him... they were looking for an actor who could sing. But could not find one. He said that they finally settled for a singer who could do a bit of acting. I would say his acting was excellent.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
