Hello, I am an aerospace engineer interested in utilizing your gear parametrization model. While reviewing the list of user parameters, I came across the equation Xsh1 = 0.30992 + 0 * Haddendum / mod_n * (1 - Z1 / Zmin) * dosh1. I would appreciate clarification on why the value 0 is employed on the right side of the addition operator.
@steelstone10 ай бұрын
The expression on the right side of 0 is the "automatic" profile shift coefficient formula. I left it there as a reminder, thus the 0 to "ignore it" for the calculation.

This is a great design, well explained. How did you arrive at the formula for the Twist Angle for the sweep? Building my own helical gear, I can't just use the helix angle, beta, as the Twist Angle as it is clearly (visually) incorrect: the value out of the formula looks better but obviously I'd like it to be actually correct rather than just visually correct.

Indeed. Search for "spring motion animate" and you'll find various examples of how it can be done with Fusion 360. It is not an actual spring compression, but spring portions animated with joins. A bit tricky and not really usefully, but funny ;)

Thank you for this video. I want to model the hyperboloid gears ith and inventor. I managed to model the hyperboloid surfaces correct if the transmission ratio is 1 and r1=r2. However if I change the transmission ratio to lets say r2/r1=3 both Hyperboloids are interfering, but the straight lines on the surface are perfectly in contact. Can you give me hint, what I am doing wrong or send me a your file for the model. Maybe this helps me to in out what I am doing wrong
@steelstone Жыл бұрын
I have the same issue as yours, increased interference as ratio diverges from 1. Actually I couldn't find any example on youtube or elsewhere of a hyperboloid gear with a ratio that is not 1. I would be happy to share my project, but since last February 2023 update, Fusion 360 crashes when opening any of my projects with a sketch containing an involute gear tooth [and it's very frustrating :( ].

@@steelstone Seems like youtube blocked my reply. Thanks for your answer. A former colleague of me developed two hyperboloid gears with transmission ratio bigger than one. (If you are interested, I can send you his publication, I can't use links in the comments). He proposed in one of his publications the formula for the axis angle: theta_axis=atan(w1)+atan(w2) or theta_achs=atan(w1)+atan(w2/i), where w1 and w2 is the twist angle of hyperboloid 1 and 2. However, with this formula I also get wrong results. If I make any progress I will let you know.

hi, can you advise me on how to change the lead angle of the worm (the angle between the helix and a plane of rotation). i am doing an experiment on how the lead angle affects the efficiency of worm gears and I need to print these gears with different lead angles.
@steelstone Жыл бұрын
On my model there is the user parameter that I call "beta1" which is the angle between the axis of rotation and the helix. I assume you mean the plane of rotation as the plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation, so you want "90° - beta1".
@davecrabbe4579 Жыл бұрын
Really nice.. the downside is that for small parts storage you need some type of containment. If you could come up with some type of vertical stacking, with a top cap that could make the system somewhat portable, would be genius. So I have 10 small screw sizes for small boxes, some larger boxes to contain bearings, some longer for steel threaded rods .. maybe design to be stacked 2 units high.. and then want to take that set of parts to the office.. so you need good containment.. Thus selecting sizes that make squares easily and then design some "lids" and methods for stacking.. maybe not possible.. I really like the snap-together features!

hi, when i create the sketch for the first part, 0.08 seconds, how do i ensure that the plane is parallel to the axis? because i kept getting it being horizontal and the end product is not desired.
@steelstone2 жыл бұрын
There are 2 planes constructed : Construct Menu -> Plane at Angle : Z axis (blue, up), "beta1_w" angle. Construct Menu -> Plane at Angle : Z axis (blue, up), "beta1_w + 90 deg" angle. So, these 2 planes are vertical along Z axis. The first sketch is done on the first "beta1_w" plane constructed. (my Z axis is vertical, that's the default orientation in Fusion 360)

Can the same procedure be done in solidworks?
@steelstone2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think so. Solidworks has the same abilities (and actually more) than Fusion to sketch, extrude, sweep, loft, split, combine, etc. I modeled a spur gear a year ago with Solidworks when I had access to it. The only thing that bothered me was the management of parameter units, they seemed inconsistent to me. I was unable to set a parameter with no unit (a count number for pattern features for example). Also, conversions to/from Degree from/to Radian had to be done manually, they are implicit with Fusion.

hey man, me again lol, how did you determine the formulas you used to calculate those unroll angles and lengths? Also I would actually like to talk more if possible, maybe through email?
@steelstone2 жыл бұрын
Those formulas are mathematics applied for Fusion 360 on circle involute definition. I didn't invent anything 😉 I suggest you to look at this video, it's a full screw gear modeling. I give a link to the parameter list in the description. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6jJZXyomNajiqM A parametric screw gear can be considered as the generic for cylindrical gears, so a helical gear is a particular case of the screw gear (same helix angle for both cylinders), and a spur gear is a particular case of the helical gear (helix angle being 0).
@chisomnnamani62002 жыл бұрын
great stuff! please where did you get the profile tooth shift formula from? and also what is xsh, Rsh, and dosh?
@steelstone2 жыл бұрын
Most of my knowledge about gears comes from these 2 websites : www.tec-science.com/mechanical-power-transmission/involute-gear/profile-shift/ www.sdp-si.com/resources/elements-of-metric-gear-technology/index.php#Section1 All concepts and formulas I used for Fusion 360 are deduced from there. "Xsh" is the Profile Shift Coefficient (a unitless value). It is usually labelled "X" on documentation. "Rsh" is the actual profile shift (in millimeters). It is labelled "V" on tec-science website. "dosh" is a parametric Boolean of my own that dictates or not a profile shift on a gear. Values shall be 1 or 0, depending on the gear teeth count (pinions are usually shifted because of their low teeth count). Then the Profile Tooth Shift formula you ask for is the expression for parameter "Ash", right ? Read stuff about Tooth Thickness on tec-science website. The expression for "Ash" is deduced from "e0" and "s0" expressions.

@@chisomnnamani6200 I corrected and updated somewhat my design since I made the video. Hi, amazing tutorial, I watched a few times to understand your usage of parameters when designing. I have a question: I was looking for way to design a helicoid focusing gear set, that are used in lenses. Usually it's 2 sets of helical gears and they work together for moving the optics for focusing. What I haven't seen online so far is how to make an internal/external helical gear set that can be parametric just like you have here in this video. Any idea of it's possible/easy to parametrize that? I'm a relatively new into gear design so don't know the extents of the possible things you can do parametrically. Thanks
@steelstone2 жыл бұрын
External gears follow the same rules as internal gears. They can be parameterized the sale way. I didn't play yet with internal gears. I guess they are the negative of external gears. So with Fusion 360, if you already have an external gear, with 3 more steps you can obtain an internal gear (circle on sketch, extrusion, and substract combine). Maybe add clearance on tip circle, remove it from root circle (tip and root are somehow inverted), and set some negative backlash on the tooth profile.
@yuriy772 жыл бұрын
@@steelstone just to show example of what I'm talking about is shown in beginning of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2SlYYeEoaZ5r80 There's the inner and outer helicoid, and I'm trying to model that parametrically so they mesh together and I could change parameters as needed (number of teeth, diameter, helix angle, etc..) I can model the pair somewhat using a plugin for helicoils, but I can't change the parameters once the component is made and have to go create new component from scratch again for a change.
@steelstone2 жыл бұрын
@@yuriy77 OK, I see. I wouldn't call this "gear", it's more like a (helical or screw) rail. I think this should be easier to model than a gear as you don't need an involute tooth profile. You can start from one of my helical gears simplifying the tooth profile. I don't see any obstacle to get a parametric design as you wish.
