havent gotten far but wanted to say, part of why the motions look and feel weird to you are proportions. your weapon is way shorter and lighter, and although with the proper proportions it may be too heavy for you, hunters are stronger than normal people. also it needed more horizontal motion and speed, but I understand why you wouldnt want to swing too quickly

This video popped up at the most opportune time because I've decided to dive into forging for the first time. Using the most bare bones set up being bricks, and a hair dryer but I know it can work from other videos just gotta stick with it.

The biggest issue with turning back to sword mode (except small things getting lodged in the maechanism) is that you don't seem to have a lot of handle to caught for it. But it look great and as balanced as it can be. To improve it, maybe putting a second edge on the top to use it more effectively for piercing.

I bladesmith and blacksmith as well and often hear the same comment but if you saw my first knife and how I went about making it you would never in a thousand years call it talent. But I did find that with every knife I made and continue to make I improve in some way and never is a newer knife worse than an older one. I won’t say blacksmithing is hard but it has a learning curve that people usually regard as nothing but I guarantee you I being of relative talent when making things will tell you that talent makes no difference when you’re blacksmithing. It’s persistence, patience and stubbornness that produce a good knife.

I think it depends on the tone? I’ve never taken it as a back-handed compliment I guess. Take two people of the same experience level and put their work next to each other, and maybe one portfolio just has… idk. Cleaner lines. Or better handle fit-up. There’s absolutely a thing as “you’re so talented” as being a heartfelt compliment. That’s just my take on it I guess. There are sincere, and insincere, ways to deliver said compliment, for sure. Idk - maybe I’m just a 35 yo, 11-years married, father-of-3 little girls, and will just blindly, gladly, and willingly take whatever compliment someone throws at me 😂😂😂

i think it would be most useful to create some way to lock it into *sword* mode. it seems to have a tendency to go back to axe mode usually.

This is really cool. It reminds me of a transforming weapon from Bloodborne if a samurai had designed it. I was watching you demonstrate how a tip-hit could force it to initiate the early stages of axe mode, and I'm not an engineer, and you'd know better than I would, how your weapon works, but I was wondering if "V2" someday might be able to prevent this kind of issue using a simple detent-like mechanism. Just a peg that goes through a hole, or a ball that sticks out into a recession, to lock it into sword mode. With a detent, the press of a button or switch can retract the peg to allow movement when desired, and help prevent it when its undesired. But I know nothing, really.

You could take the design of a plain longsword, use an axe head as a crossguard, cut out the area where the fuller is, and at the end of the fuller near the point there could be a latch that could catch the axe head in place. A trigger of some sort could be used to engage and disengage the latches that hold the axe head in place.

I suspect the word "talented" gets misused or is simply misunderstood by many. I suspect it's intended to be a compliment, but you're right, it can feel a discredit to all the hard work you put into learning something. You absolutely proved the point that practice leads to progress. The improvement between your first and last knife is striking! And it's not just the hammer work, but in all aspects of the process that you improve. Also, something a mentor smithy told me that I could never quite achieve but always kept in mind was that you need to keep the elbow of your hammer arm closer to your body. Holding your arm out more feels natural, but it's similar to slouching and will cause problems for your elbow and shoulder eventually. I think that's the tennis elbow you described. Just an observation. Great work! ^_^
