Hidden Tang Hunting Knife with Hamon

In this video I am making a hidden tang knife out of 1095 steel. It is diffentially hardened using some furnace cement, which creates a nicely visible line, the hamon. The guard, pin and pommel are all out of brass and I still have no idea what kind of wood this is. Please let me know if you do.

Hi there ! Nice knife, but DO NOT DIRECTLY GO FROM DISH SOAP TO THE FERRIC ! 😬😬😬 Dish soap is here to neutralise the ferric, you'll mess the whole solution of ferric by going back and forth between the 2. Clean it with acetone, go into the ferric, rince with water while rubbing with sand paper or steel whool, then back again into the ferric, etc... Until you have the finish you want. The dish soap is the very last stage after all that stuff 😉

Pretty bad ass, I hope your neighbor liked it! 1095 is easy to sharpen, and has good edge retention, but it’ll rust pretty fast if it’s not lubed up. Also, you may want to oil quench instead of water. I think most Smiths and knife makers are using oil. Because only the cool guys are oil quenchers 😅

Yes he liked it. I lubed the knife before giving it to him and explained a bit about maintenance of high carbon steel. I actually also made him a leather sheath about a month later and by that time the blade already gathered some brown rust because he kept it in his cold, damp garage 😅 so yeah, 1095 is definitely not for everyone

@@NjordArtisan Jeez, that kinda sucks! I mean it's cool that he let you use his anvil, but damn that knife would almost have been better to keep or sell, with the great job you did on it! I get the point though. You were making a grand gesture, but after that it's kinda out of your hands.

Yes, it was kinda sad to see as this was the first knife I felt good enough about to even consider selling it 😅😄 But I still learned a lot and as you said, at some point it‘s out of your hand
