I'm 52 and have only recently learned of this game, I would have absolutely loved this when I was in my teens and lived on the spectrum. My retro spectrum will be here Sunday and Lords of Midnight is on it.

The first time I understand what those kids see in video game streamers. Everything about this video is very entertaining. I have Frontier installed and I could play it right now but I'd rather watch this. Loved the piano intro theme.

In fairness to the capital punishment at a moments notice in ED (ik I'm taking a joke seriously 3 years late). You're not being shot because your loitering. You're being shot because you're loitering a massive spaceship with incredible destructive potential. It's less parking a car in the wrong bay and more flying off course above a military airfield.

Think I’m going to buy a 92 golf with an aba bottom end swap. It’s fantastic under when under acceleration. There are 2 things I’m not so sure about. 1 is at idle the rpms will just steadily fluctuate between 1000 and 1200 rpms. The owner thinks it is due to the tune that may be on it. The other thing is the owner told me when the engine is cold, and it has set for several days there will be smoke coming from the exhaust upon startup. I did not witness this as it was already warm.

Great vid. Thanks for posting, Drew. I'll try not to take it too personally that you failed to mention the Acorn Electron 😆 Like the BBC Micro version, except for... • No Continents on planets • No Suns • and No colour at all - not even shades of grey

My favourite part was - and stop reading if you haven't watched it all - is when Drew showed off Lave station from all four games' perspectives at the same time. Skillfully and masterfully showcasing the advancement of technology in the video game industry all the while producing a still baffling sense of nostalgia for the viewer. I remember, some twenty years ago, delving into the Elite franchise's games, and here I am, two decades later, taking my first steps into the newest iteration, Elite: Dangerous Odyssey. Truly remarkable stuff, really.

i believe "the club" is intended to be the in game equivalent to the developers themselves

1:49:18 Well, you might have a color limit on the Amiga 500 with only 32 or 64 colors at best. But on the PC, you had 256 colors with VGA available. The game doesn't support EGA or CGA. Also, black is already used in the cockpit graphics.

1:36:52 The textures were a nice thing in Frontier: Elite II. It was one of the first game, that made use of textures. Thus this was very impressive at that time.
@OpenGL4everАй бұрын
1:24:57 That's a nice thing i didn't know.
@OpenGL4everАй бұрын
1:14:37 Definitely not. It may be technically impressive, but Newtonian physics ruins the gameplay unless you want to play KSP. And even in Kerbal Space Program you get a lot of help to at least somewhat master the orbital mechanics.
@OpenGL4everАй бұрын
1:28:10 Exactly and this was one of its problem. The autopilot might help, if it doesn't crash you into an object. But doing it all manually was usually too difficult for most gamers that just wanted to have fun.
@OpenGL4everАй бұрын
1:32:56 This was the next problem of that game.

I was a member of CoR for years. Would love to get back in. Just recently got into Odyssey and honestly I am mind blown about where the game is now.

This kind of stuff needs to be in the game as cut scenes. Not audio clips and a screenshot. It would be great if Elite had a story mode. That’s what hooked me on the original Guild Wars series of games years ago.
@OpenGL4everАй бұрын
28:25 Frontier: First Encounter was not a success because most players already knew from their experience with Frontier: Elite II that the realistic inertia mechanics meant that the game was not fun to play, especially in combat. Windows 95 was less of a problem. While it is true that this program, written in assembly language, required DOS, but Windows 95 and Windows 98 provided a way to exit Windows and boot into DOS. So it was relatively easy to get it to work if you wanted to. My guess is that it used its own DOS extender that was incompatible with DPMI. Or it used Unreal Mode, which was also incompatible with Windows' DPMI Host.

The original BBC version was just 22kb in size and blew the minds of the designers of the BBC Micro. I think they created a custom display setup (not just the mode split) such that the horizontal pixel count was lower so as to free up memory. The 128k spect had several times the memory and could switch between 2 frame buffers.

BTW, could you please number these lore videos from one to one hundred for example that we can watch it uninterrupted. Now it's a bit confusing. KZbin does not arrange them correctly as thee is Thargoids part one and part two. It thinks those are separate from the lore...

Played this off and on the last idk 5 years never really got into it got into groups that just fed money to me and I didn't learn this time the past idk month I have sat down and started learning on my own with what I picked up over the past off and on in the past five years and I am finally enjoying the game the way I wanted to. I finally have a python and working on fed grind just for the corvette then I'll move on from there. And I will be listening to this the next few days with a huge thank you from me. ❤

I’ve enjoyed these streams of Wing Commander, but I’ve realised I prefer the experience of WC1 and WC2. I find the difference between the real actors in cut scenes and the computer graphics elsewhere pulls me out of the immersion. I’m wondering if that will change when the cut scenes are all CGI again.
