Two cents on JMRI. Start adding rolling stock to Excel as follows. Car # first, road reporting marks next, then car type BX Boxcar, gTX Tank car and so on, and last length of car. Run trains 😊 wait, did you say pool table? 😮

I love the focus on ops! I have a lot of thoughts and comments for you. Overall, I would sit down and figure out how many trains you are going to run. You might know this already, but it wasn't 100 pct clear from the video. Doing that will require a simple track diagram from west to east (or north to south) and then figuring out how you are going to move the traffic along your route. For example based on what I can glean from the video, I think you will need at least 3 locals, and you will need to know the yards those locals originate from, where they end up, and what they pick up along the way. I would then make running the full extent of each local 1 job run by 1 guy along the extent of its route.
@KandWRailroader
@KandWRailroader 12 сағат бұрын
@@admiralseabass8993 Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Each staging yard can hold five trains and each staging yard is dedicated to either La Junta or the Wichita yards. There are actually four local runs, one in each direction from either Wichita or La Junta. I've figured this all out in my head at least because I figured out the operations scheme before I laid a single piece of track. My operations videos are basically test runs of different elements of the scheme but I can't really try more than one element at a time without additional operators. I'll get there someday.

Opts are an ever evolving process. I've operated on two large club layouts that had every type train running on them. My layout is a regional shortline with no through traffic, so all my trains are single operator only. I'm the "train boss" and I have basically enough positions for 4 or 5 crew members, room for them likely not lol. There no dispatch, the crews self dispatch and communicate with each other. Things get hairy sometimes but that part of the fun.

I've never worked for a real railroad, but the industry has always fascinated me, especially the organizational/efficiency/operational aspects. I can certainly operate my entire railroad on my own "one train at a time", and will be happy doing so. I struggled with that issue for a while myself. I'm not sure how I would feel about inviting a perfect stranger into my home, railfan or not. I have met one person already via my channel, and we found a local event to meet at first for an introduction before anyone showed up at anyone's home. I've also run into a few channel subscribers at local train shows. It helps I think that I wear a t-shirt with my logo on it for just such a random meeting. I'm always amazed at these larger city model railroad tours where you ride a bus to private homes to view layouts. I'm guessing that there haven't been many, or any issues for that type of event to take place. I have already mentioned on my channel and in a few comments that I live in Wichita, Kansas, so that cat is already out of the bag. My email address is listed on my channel home page so any interested person could contact me via email and we could get the ball rolling via that route. I've spoken to a few people already that way.

@@AirwolfCrazy Yes, the cell phone and computer pages are different...the cell phone version is difficult to navigate in general. Either way, I have zero expectations for anyone outside the Wichita metro area to be interested in traveling to my home for an op session so no worries there. From all the videos I've seen of the Timonium show, it sounds like a great time, but yes, not a show I will likely ever get to visit. Heck, I have hard time making the shows in Wichita! I am aware that livestreaming is a thing (not the same as Wifi ops, I know), and have seen other KZbinrs do that, but I am neither equipped or have the knowledge to make something like that happen. That could be a fun way to interact from what I've seen so that may be in the cards in the near future...who knows. But you're right, it wouldn't be the same as being there.

I agree with you about repainting the Royal Gorge rock area but haven’t wanted to say anything. For Holcolmb, you might want to consider using the highest part of the cover over the helix track as the base for a new platform that covers the entire top of the helix. It would give you much more room for the electric plant and it would hide the track entering the helix and allow you to move the storage tracks out to the edge so you would have much more room for the conveyors and scenery and then if you wanted to you could turn the electric plant 90 degrees counter clockwise so the coal pile could be next to the loading and unloading tracks to be more prototypical and not jammed up against the wall in the back of the scene. Just my thoughts to solve some of the issues you have mentioned.
@KandWRailroader
@KandWRailroader Күн бұрын
@@derekalexander4030 Please! Never hesitate to make a suggestion! I've made all sorts of changes to my layout based on viewer feedback so I always welcome more! As for the change you recommended to Holcomb, the problem I had there was as the cover for the helix track got higher and higher to provide clearance for the train underneath, it then became higher than the subroadbed for the power plant, thereby creating a "bowl effect" for that scene. This essentially limited my space for the scene to what it currently is, except that it was partially obscured and also difficult to reach. I hope that makes sense without a visual aid...although you could refer back a few videos to when I still had that cover in place temporarily to see what I mean.

For your electrical cabinet, you don't need to make a permanent backdrop. If you get some flat neodymium magnets and use double-sided tape to adhere them to a masonite board, you can stick that board to the electrical panel no problem, and remove as easily. I'd probably overlap that board over the flanking boards on each side first, glue the printed backdrop over it, then cut the backdrop with a razor knife along the seams. Then touch up the edges of the removable board so it blends in a bit. Otherwise, I'd also keep a flashlight on the wall ouside the door to the train room, so you don't tap in the dark looking for the electrical panel. 😄

They also make a regular gel that sets up quicker! The ultrgel sets up in 15 seconds, this gives you the time to make any adjustments you may need to make! And the other reason I use specific brand is that you can control the amount of glue you need, you can see the smallest drop per post, once the first post is secure you can move to all of the rest! It is so much easier than using the runny CA! I hope this is some help!

I will vote for backdrops. These really need to be added so that you can better plan your foreground structures. It is easier now to do them rather than later because if you wait for later after your structures are in place then you will go crazy trying to find a background that fits the scene. If you do it now you can fit your structures to fit the backdrop scenes a lot easier. Also if you are using something other than clouds and sky especially if it has a road going off in the distance remember to radius the bottom to better blend the background to the foreground. It doesn't need to be a long radius but just enough so that you don't have a 90 degree joint between the backdrop and the bench top.

Vote and great tips recorded! Thank you! You have a great point about the roads, as I already have a problem with the Holly backdrop for that reason and will probably have to replace it. I won't be adding any more roads until the backdrop is in place for that scene. I have a pretty good idea what I want for backdrops for the rest of the layout, but most of them are going to have to be custom and I've yet to approach Trainkjunkies on how that will work. I'm sure I will have to take my own photos though which will require visits to each location, something I'm hoping to accomplish this summer.

@@KandWRailroader If you are going to need some custom backdrops there are several very good tutorials on KZbin showing how to do it correctly and showing the software to stitch them together for doing long backdrops. The best part is it's not very hard to do and you don't need a fancy camera to do it. Of course the bad part is the cost of printed backgrounds today.

@@sierge1 Thanks for the tip, but there are just some things that I refuse to even try to do myself, this, working on loco electronics and 3D printing for some examples. A lot of it has to do with "is it really worth my time trying to learn how to do some of these things to save a few bucks?" If my layout was already complete and I had more time to try new things, I would probably be more interested. I know that Trainjunkies can do custom work, I just haven't taken the time to find out what they need from me to make it happen. I understand your point about making sure the backdrop works with the foreground and structures, but my structure locations are pretty well fixed as well as the track and I am happy with all of that. The way I have envisioned the backdrops, I believe that I can make them work with each scene as they have been designed. None of my structures will be glued in place so they can easily be removed to install backdrops and if a scene reaches a point where I need to have the backdrop installed before doing more scenery (like the Holcomb Power Plant and Royal Gorge Route), then I will do so, regardless of the poll results.
