Thanks so very much! I am just beginning, after receiving a starter felting kit from my brother as a surprise gift (what an awesome brother!) Your videos are “right up my alley”…as a retired scientist, I really appreciate your studies of different supplies and techniques, and your fine attention to detail! Your finished animals are fantastic! With gratitude, from the west coast of Canada.

I know this is two years later, but phones have a way of knowing what craft I’m doing and recommend things to me. So you popped up. I bought a kit similar to the one you showed first, and it was wonderful to get a variety of needles and colors. The best part was mine came with little eyes and fastenings. The foam mat and needle holder had me quickly buying a small wool mat and better needles along with better quality wool. My first project was a little cat tucked into a teddy bear costume. So cute, but awful. With the kit mentioned ABOVE, however, I’d gained enough confidence to make some Christmas ornaments for a friend. Such a fun craft.

Felting, the perfect craft for making cute little fluffy toy animals, as presents for your friends & family, rather than taking out your needles on voodoo dolls & cursing your enemies, perfect art therapy. 😆✌️

I was taught to create a hoop for the head, but I've found it tricky as when I come to felt the head the hoop can be a point of resistance. Do you attach the head as a single ball of wool?
@juliesfeltedfriends6 күн бұрын
Yes there are lots of different ways of doing this and you can create a hoop, but as you've guessed I tend to make a ball and then make a hole with an awl for the pipe cleaner neck to go into. Hope this helps and thanks for watching

Would like to add a shaggy brown donkey and a Highland cow (yes, I know there were no heelancoo in Bethlehem) to my nativity scene. While I’m sure they’re very well made and worth it, I don’t fancy paying $80 each for them! Thanks to you, I now think I may be able to do this myself. I’ll live my wonky donkey!
@juliesfeltedfriends6 күн бұрын
Aw I'm glad you've found my videos helpful, I think you can have whatever you want in your Nativity 😊 a donkey and Highland cow sounds lovely. Unfortunately as you know needle felting takes a long time, so that's what you're paying for when you buy made items, as well as the skill of that maker. But glad you've been able to make your own, thanks for watching

I needle painted for a while. I found I could make small amounts of blended colours on small hand carders. So if someone is starting off you need not purchase oodles of colours but blend your own. Once you know the main shades you like then you can buy larger quantities in a limited number of colours/shades/tones.
@juliesfeltedfriends6 күн бұрын
Definitely, thanks for mentioning this really good advice, yes it's a good way of making a colour that you might not have, thanks for watching

@juliesfeltedfriends6 күн бұрын
Sorry do you mean a very small scale model as in like the ones for train sets? If so, you'd have to work out what height you wanted the model to be and draw it out using those measurements. I brought needles that have large,medium & small how do I work out what gauge they would be? I’m just starting out this video I found very helpful & just purchased the ones you are using 🙏
@juliesfeltedfriends9 күн бұрын
Hi there, if you have needles that are only marked large, medium and small, it can be tricky to know what gauge they are, Felts by Philippa does a very good video on different needles which you might want to check out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5KyopSkaa2shJIsi=A2kZpTlNPsdBB8iw I would think that the small would be around 40 to 42 gauge, the medium around 36 to 38 gauge and the large be more like 32 gauge. Glad you like the video, thanks for watching

I sincerely appreciate your attention to detail and ability to convey the subtlety between tools and types of wool, techniques and options. I trust artists that endeavor to know their materials innately. You spend quality time with what you work with and it shows. ❤ secondly- you have BEAUTIFUL nails/skin. Just wanted to let you know that. As a woman in my thirties, I can admire the lustre, the sheen and texture of your cuticles and nail beds. Those are quality genes you have there. 😊

The yarn ball took you so long because you kept putting it down to stab it. To wind a nice round yarn ball, you can just start with a few loops of yarn you fold onto themselves, and then you wrap the yarn around it in one direction at first. Once that is wrapped, you do a set perpendicular to the first. And then a set covering the 'top and bottom'. Keep making sets in different directions. Your ball will look like a Zauberball (google it). The final layer can be wrapped all over to even it out. And then covered in felting wool.
@juliesfeltedfriends22 күн бұрын
Many thanks for this, I'm new to winding wool 😊 I think I was over-worrying about it being round enough 😊 I'll try this in the future, once again many thanks for sharing ❤️

I thought I'd share a tip I discovered the other day: if you, like me, have trouble pulling big hanks of wool out or pulling them apart, get some thinning shears. They're meant to be used on hair, and they have one sawtooth blade, which makes uneven cuts that are much more like pulling the wool apart. I have some dyspraxia, so anything that lessens the amount of strength required of my hands is better for me.
@juliesfeltedfriends22 күн бұрын
Oh wow thanks for this tip, I guess the thinning shears cuts some of the wool up into shorter strands and helps to mix it up, I'll have to try that, thanks again for this and thanks for watching
