If keen trout fishing boys [& even mature men] learn how to fish this wee burn & look after it in the process, they will get the returns an fun from the chasing of trout that I got from around the age of 10 years old until I left Scotland in 1980! From the upper reaches above & under Marthas brig, to the lower reaches below the main railway towards the 5 mile cut. In that stretch the trout took on a silver near transparent appearance with few spots that were red, a throw back to their origin from Loch Leven to an unplanned introduction due to a hot day & not reaching their true destination due to hear stress. They tended to be bigger lower down as well, that would be 1 of many stories, going further afield & exploring where I had never been on coming from around a bush adjacent to an ancient stone arch bridge with its own "deep" pool a fish swam down from the stream & under an old wood sleeper in the bottom before the bridge, no doubt due its size an no sign of any other I knew it was its pool, thus set out to get advice from grown ups on how to catch - - - Great work by all in re - introducing!

How many are you seeing there? I can't see many? Do you have a polariser filter on?
@bumptybump
@bumptybump 3 жыл бұрын
I reckon there were about 5 salmon there Richard and they were fairly large for the Ayr. Yes, I used a polarisng filter on the lens but still wasn't that clear and I was limited in my ability to get closer .... I was on top of 90' cliffs and peering through branches just to see these fish. It was encouraging to see fresh salmon so far up the river even during the exceptionally low flows that prevailed all summer.

Well we've been a year later and treated the area again. There was plenty of Giant Hogweed on it this year but virtually none flowering so looks like we have made progress. This area will require attention for several years to come and vigilance for at least 10 more years as the seed bank is probably pretty large and can remain viable for years.

@@bumptybump You guys need to come to Edinburgh, there's tonnes of it here, particularly around the bypass, airport and River Almond. I've managed to get the council to spray a couple of patches this year. Some of them were jutting out into busy paths which were being used during lockdown. I'm amazed more people haven't been hurt. Many people in the city don't even know what it is, or what it can do to you.

@@bumptybump We've been complaining for years. I know that some children have had incidents. The only way to get the politicians to do anything is when someone gets severely hurt or they think it is an electoral issue. On the flipside, the Water of Leith Trust seems to be good at tackling it. We used to have tonnes of it up where I lived in the north east. Remote areas sometimes. I'm sure cars and trains spread it. That's the only explanation for how it gets into some corners of the countryside.

www.thesocietyofwilliamwallace.com, writes......"historian John Major referred to Wallace - albeit more than 200 years after this death - as the "King of Kyle", Kyle being an area of Ayrshire, but the Kilmarnock "Ellerslie" actually stands in the area known as Cunningham, but this has not deterred some from claiming it as his birthplace. The Stewards owned land in Kyle, so perhaps this is where Major’s history is mistaken. Intriguingly, Kyle is a corruption of the Gaelic word for a wood, Coille (pronounced Kyle), so perhaps Major was right in naming him King of Kyle or King of the Forest, as we know Wallace based himself in the great forests of that time".
