man ive seen you on youtube for a min, we talked in the comments like a year ago since I was working as an FSE at the time. Just wanna say, your really good at this youtube thing I just think your topic will never be super popular though. At least all i've seen you talk about is being an FSE and everything related to it which is cool but that isn't a huge demographic so your youtube/video skills feel a little wasted. Thats just one guys opinion though don't let me stop you making content.

Thank you for putting out these videos as being a FSE is a unique role not meant for everyone, but for those who do it long-term, they usually love it. I think you can simmer down very well what traits and scenarios being an FSE can face when at a customer site. I have only worked in the biotech and medical device space, so I think you give an excellent breadth of the different FSE roles out there as they can vary so highly. Thank you for your work.

I'm out of SLC, which is a Delta hub so I try very hard to book with Delta if at all possible. United is my next choice and after that as long as it isn't spirit I don't care. National offers just walking to the lot and grabbing whatever car catches your eye. Fast easy and they are my company's preferred rental service, so it's a no-brainer for me. A few years back with a different company the guy training me was a Hilton guy. So, I focused on Hilton. He even said most of the Field Service guys prefer Marriot but for whatever reason he was Hilton. I'm still with Hilton but I do agree, it seems Marriot is a bit more modern and I even think their rewards rate is better, but I'm not sure.

I hope you can answer my question. I am doing some field research about employment benefits. I would like to know what is common between employees as to which class you are allowed to fly (economy, premium comfort or maybe even business). For info: Mostly international flights and on average they are working at sites about 60% of their time. I appreciate your answers.

My $0.02 on fixing down to component level vs. whole assembly replacement. My current company prefer to replace a broken assembly however as far as I am concerned, you still always need to fault find down to component level for two reasons: 1) You might need to make a temporary repair whilst waiting for a part. 2) You need to know that replacing the failed assembly will actually deal with the root cause of the fault and that the assembly didn't fail because of something else. Like engineers who just replace blown fuses without thinking about why the fuse blew. I just went to a job where two previous engineers had replaced an ion gauge and then the cable and driver board for it. When I went, I took the time to troubleshoot instead of just throwing parts at random and found that a FET in the driver circuit had failed short. Further inspection revealed that there had been overheating elsewhere causing thermal runaway. I was able to source an appropriate FET from the customers workshop and make a temporary repair. I checked that the gate driver was still good but I ordered the replacement board anyway since I was worried about the previous heat damage. This meant that they could keep running for the couple of weeks it would take to replace the board assembly. I classify FSEs in two camps: part throwers/fuse changers vs. troubleshooters. The first don't think too much, they just throw expensive parts at machines till something sticks. The latter think through things and take time even on a PM to really consider everything and understand what is going on. It doesn't matter if your company want you to be a part chucker (that happens too... they can resent employees thinking too much) as someone who aims to be a professional FSE with their own integrity, you always have to be troubleshooting and aiming to understand exactly what is going on. I have gotten myself in trouble before because I have pointed out flaws in designs and made suggestions as to how we can stop chucking parts at things by doing things differently so they are more robust but then I represent myself as a professional technician as well as my company so integrity means I have to do these things.

Holy cow Jake G! I can tell you’ve been at this for a while. What industry if you don’t mind me asking ? As someone that likes to think deeply, it’s part of the reason why I enjoy this job. Knowing the root cause and being able to solve a problem knowing the exact cause.
