I was entertained when you said backwards loop co you’ll never use - I actually use it for everything! Just shows you how flexible knitting is, and how personal preferences can be a big part of what you choose. For anyone wondering: I always knit a round of straight flat knitting after I cast on, which makes the backwards loop much easier to start from.

Yep, just because it isn't to my taste doesn't mean it doesn't work great for someone else LOL!

I never thought of cast ons as substantial or insubstantial, only stretchy, very stretchy, not stretchy. Thanks Again for sharing your in-depth, technical knowledge!🧶🧶

I enjoy all your videos and this was no exception, great topic and well done. This is a good message to get out there for beginner knitters. It is your project, you can modify and as long as you are happy with the outcome more power to you. The important thing is to enjoy the process. The more you knit the more experience you will acquire and the more comfortable you will feel modifying in the future. Thank you MS Benson for the expertise you share with us and for always making me smile.

I think it is an important transition from Beginner to Intermediate to know that you CAN change a cast-on/bind-off. And knowing which ones work to flip. And to change colors, or change yarn, and how.

This is the best book in my library! Cap S. explains if a CO/BO is stretchy, flares, etc. Also, some xxx CO have a similar look to yyy BO. Explanations are excellent! German Twisted CO and Icelandic BO are my faves !! I have fun looking thru the book just to see what I want to try! Thanks for this video, I remember my early knitting days…books, magazines didn’t have the “how” to make/do the simpler things…I guess they all thought everyone knew … until I found info explaining a technique. Internet is also a very useful tool/reference, once you weed thru the extraneous bits.

I absolutely despise the long tail cast on and ditched it as soon as I learned the cable cast on - it works well for socks and is so much easier. I might even have learnt that from you!

Thank you so much for this video! I have been knitting for 2 years and had no idea it was ok to substitute cast on or bind off methods. I get frustrated with the long tail cast on and running out of yarn, I'd like to learn the knitted or cable cast on and use that instead. I've been watching your videos for a long time and really appreciate all the content you provide, I have learned so much from you!

Well this is awesome. This one reply has made the entire video worthwhile. You are exactly the person I was talking to. Here is a short on the cable cast on: kzbin.infohxBQZeM4b38 and one that is a little more in-depth: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJK7paeHlsygnNk

Thanks for sharing about cable cast on for in the round. I've had the twisting with long tail cast on.

It is such a pain in the tuchus. I love knitting in the round, but not the "join in the round being careful not to twist" part.

I agree on long-tail cast on. Other than quickness, I do not see the attraction and estimating yarn is a pain. I too, use the cable cast on which is easy and a good versatile cast on.

I would understand the obsession of the long tail cast on if it was easy to teach, but it really isn't. I just don't get it.

So interesting! I bought a shawl pattern where the cast on was the one you’d use for a toe up sock. After multiple failed attempts I looked at the 16 page pattern and said “Nope!”. 😂😂😂

as a person with limited dexterity I have a hard time doing a lot of different cast ons, especially ones that require a “slingshot” position of the hands. I do the knitted on cast on for most things, but I do know the alternate method for doing long tail that doesn’t require the slingshot. What I would love to find, and haven’t yet, is a similar alternative method for other cast ons, such as German twisted, that will allow me to expand my repertoire a little.😊
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 7 ай бұрын
This is an excellent reminder. The slingshot requires a fair amount of finger finesse and a lot of twisting of both fingers and the wrist which can also aggravate repetitive strain injuries. I ran across a video on the no slingshot long tail and tried it out and very quickly decided that it was so not worth it. The long tail cast on just isn't that special in it's performance.

I learned the twisted german cast on for your Mapes shawl and never looked back lol I use it for almost everything. I also almost exclusively do the icelandic bind off to match, so many things are like "do a sewn bind off" or whatever and I'm like nope noooot worth it lol

This is funny because a friend of mine who has been crocheting and knitting for decades was recently complaining about a hat brim not being stretchy.i asked her what CO she used and she said idk. I didnt know there was more than 1. 😂

LOL, but seriously these are the people I am talking to. If you learn a single cast on and then the standard bind off in your learn to knit class and the teacher doesn't at least briefly mention "Hey, just so you know this is only one way to do these things, there are literally dozens of other ways to do this." then how would one even know to ask the question. You don't know what you don't know sometimes.

Sadly, the book you showcased is only available as a high priced used book on Amazon. As there are no lys in my area, makes it near impossible to obtain. That being said, as always another amazing video with some really great information.

When I clicked through to get the link to the book it was priced around $28. I know that Amazon has a surge pricing algorithm and I can't help but wonder if enough people went to look at it to trigger something wonky. I just looked at my preferred used book seller and it has new copies for a mind boggling $252. I had no idea. The video is still free tho LOL!
