I’ll be real, the first time I watched this episode I found Donna pretty annoying (in a way that I still enjoyed a lot) almost entirely. However obviously by the end they try to make her unclench a little, in a way that ends up making the whole episode super endearing upon rewatch after you’ve seen all her episodes. And of course even when I found the character annoying that first time I knew that Catherine Tate was absolutely crushing it and I was still laughing and having a blast.

Haven't listened to many Big Finish, so these stories sound both fascinating and daunting to me. I might stick to the weekly stories from Into The Tardis for now... And I could definitely see a scene of Romana claiming the oubliette hadn't been used for a long time while in the background, people are being shoved into it. Sounds right up Moffat and RTD's street.

Catherine Tate was getting overexposed in 2006 (her catchphrase "bovvered" was Word of the Year!), so I do remember a bit of backlash against her casting, not helped by Donna being rather annoying in this episode.

One of the better 7th Doctor series and a decent argument for a season 27. It'll be interesting to see if Fenric or any of the other members of the Pantheon will make an appearance in future series though.

Small correction, Ghost Monument and Rosa were both filmed in South Africa, not a quarry (as usual). Decent Christmas Special and a much better introduction to this series than the season opener. And yes, black cabs are quite roomy inside and the passengers face each other.

Two episodes with a decent setup, but completely torpedoed by terrible third acts. L.I.N.D.A. and its members deserved so much better: Chibnall had a cruel reputation for killing off people for no good reason, but RTD is very capable of that as well. And the Absorbalov does look a bit like Mojo, but I'd rather suggest Fred Dukes, aka Blob.

Had heard a lot of good things about this one for a long time, so finally listened to it on Spotify and, yes, it's very Douglas Adams. Pretty funny, bit of tonal whiplash and an underwhelming ending, but still a great listen, especially for old Whovians. Frobisher is a delight and I now need to read/listen to more of his stories!

If New Who ever wants to do another TARDIS bottle episode I want a horror moment where (insert current companion at the time) finds a hallway and it’s just old companion rooms, like going down the hallway you’re going chronologically through them and then there’s a blank spot on the wall at the end where (current comapanion)‘s room will eventually go

A companion having an existential crisis when they realise they're just a blip in the Doctor's existence, could be incredible in the hands of the right people, but sadly I would be very surprised if this would ever get green-lit.

Ah, the good old days of 1972, when the UK (Peladon) was thinking of joining the EEC (now the EU) and had to work together with it's old enemies to build a better future... Anyway, a good third Doctor story with a decent follow-up (the Doctor being confronted with the results of his actions should happen more often).

@@DuelingGenre Tbf, the UK's position in/out of the EU has been a hot topic for half a century here, while it's probably just a blip for American fans. But just in case, the 1972 Miner's Strike that led to power cuts interrupting this story's broadcast, inspired the second Peladon serial.

I’d be fine with Ruby’s mom being a nobody if Ruby ended up being a somebody through some chain of events. Like cool, she’s just a chick, the season was very pro-adoption, but yeah even in a “magic is bleeding through” kinda season she’s not making magic snow to the point where literal gods are confused and scared just by wanting something hard enough.

Really robs them of any power. And if they're going to be the focus going forward, that seems like a mistake.
@alfje5492
@alfje5492 2 ай бұрын
A few things from the commentary: - RTD likes Rey Nobody, so decided to make Ruby's mom a 'nobody' - the 'kind mother' scene was almost cut, but RTD wanted to show Sutekh's effect on the universe. - the memory-Tardis was made for this finale, but they liked the set so much that they kept it and the Tales of the Tardis came from there. - RTD thought of Sutekh hanging onto the Tardis after he saw Pyramids in 1975! - Lenny Rush (Morris) was indeed originally cast as the voice of baby Eric

RTD does need to leave these world-ending threats that get resolved and reset so easily, out of his finales and focus on what he does best: character, drama, emotions! Sutekh was just background noise in the engaging (but ultimately disappointing) search for Ruby's mum. Great setup and a meh resolution, pretty much on track for RTD. Anyway, we got some good episodes in this series and hopefully s2 will be even better (and longer?)

Never seen Bridgerton or any of these wealth-pr0n series, so wasn't looking forward to this episode, but I was thoroughly entertained. There were a few issues (especially the Dr moving in way too fast), however Capt. Jack 2.0 is a welcome addition to the lore. I'm still not sure how this series is supposed to lure in new viewers though, as this episode was probably a step too far for some (lapsed) viewers and the next episode has a lot of call-backs to the old and even older series!

Lots of trepidations for this Black Mirror lite episode, but it turned out to be unfounded. Great episode, but didn't get the racism message the first time: I read Lindy as xenofoob (the Doctor is not from their planet) and classist (Ricky is older, probably not one of the rich kids, but a paid entertainer, so a 'servant' and therefore expendable). Watching it a second time, yeah, it's very clear how she keeps blocking, ignoring the Doctor. RTD in Unleashed immediately says it's all about racism, so maybe this episode just shows my up my white privilege.
@DuelingGenre

I definitely think it became all about racism, but given that it was originally written for 11 or 12, it was clearly going to be about something else at some point. There concept has potential for so many social themes.

There are a lot of indications that The Devil's Chord was supposed to air later, probably at the end with the other Gods episode(s). Enjoyed this episode, but it might not live up to a rewatch. A bunch of good ideas glued somewhat clumsily together: really strong start and seeing Ruby's life glide by was great, however the Welsh-nationalist bit felt surplus and the ending was slightly underwhelming.

As we said in the podcast, the stuff in the pub was easily the worst part. Felt like RTD had a real bone to pick, but targeting Ruby with his ire felt like a mistake. Glad to be catching up with the podcast! General thoughts- Space Babies was funny and cheesy and pure distilled RTD, it’s just gonna take me a while to get used to it after Moffatt and Chibnall kinda made me put my big girl pants on for several years. The monster did make me fight the urge to barf for a couple minutes though. Devil’s Chord felt a little unfocused- like all the plot beats were there, the story was there, but it felt like they were trying to do a lot in a short span. If this were back in RTD’s first run, I have a feeling this would have been a two-parter. But Jinkx Monsoon could play every over the top villain in everything I watch from now on and it wouldn’t be enough, I could tell everyone was having a BLAST filming.

Space Babies is half an episode constructed around the need to dump 60 years of history in 20 minutes so that new viewers can jump on... it's a worse version of Rose and if this was my first DW episode ever, I don't think I would continue watching if Ncuti wasn't so charming. However, the second episode is really great, so I can see why they dropped both of these at the same time. And now that we're past the awkward introduction, I can look forward to some awesome adventures in the rest of season 40!

Absolutely. I get that it was the first companion loss of Doctor Who, so it had to feel like a big deal because it WAS a big deal to most of the new to Who audience... but it still felt like overkill.
