Good video, thanks for sharing the truth about this radio. All these capabilities the radio has are cancelled out by a poor receive problem that is probably hardware, low price for a reason. These Chinese radios are more difficult to program for sure. I have a Anytone 878+ that is a major PITA to use with most of the changes have to be done by software. How do hams put up with a manufacturer having the user doing the debugging, imagine if auto makers did this. Oh, wait they do also😂.

Thank for your review. I too find it extremely deaf. Just monitoring the APRS frequency to hear the APRS burps, I believe SQL was at the lowest setting before it being off, all of the other radios, in the same weight class, heard it just fine but this radio never open SQL. If I turned off SQL, then it heard everything just like everything else. I think SQL is very aggressive, and maybe this is something they can fix in the firmware. I really want this radio to work well. It was not inexpensive for its "weight class". 73, KN4VA

This was just fixed in todays beta firmware. They are really good about responding to emails. They fixed a NOAA scanning issue in the firmware for me and fixed a bug in the app where I couldn't edit the channel group names. This radio has a lot of potential and I like the responsiveness of BTech.

Thank you for your honest review. I've gotten a bit weary of the channels that almost function like commercials to sell every new radio that comes out. I don't wish to be critical of them but the reviews that show pro's and cons are much more valuable to me. The channels I like the best are the ones that critically test the features, talk about whether the audio and reception are good, and especially ones (like TheSmokinApe and Ham Radio DX) that break out the test equipment and show me whether there are spurious emissions to look for and other technical quality aspects. I'm especially appreciative when a channel gets out the tone generator and show me the receiver's sensitivity. I love to hear when it's explained that a particular radio has much better airband reception that others. I realize that not every channel an be great in every area, so when they give me the pros and cons honestly, I don't take it as a negative thing. It also great when they show me how they throw their antenna up in a tree for POTA. (Ham Radio Tube). I don't completely understand the problems you're having with APRS because I don't know enough about it. However I do appreciate the fact that you are trying to help improve this radio for the community and explain to others like me who don't know what we don't know. One of the channels I really like (I think it was Ham Radio Crash Course) explained that using the APRS-DROID app helped bridge the gap because when you were tying to send an SMS message, APRS-DROID would try multiple times, rather than just once. Perhaps you can explain in a follow-up video if using APRS-DROID (expecially now that this radio has KISS-TNC that apparently works with it) addresses the problems you see with the radio. Personally, I really like features of the UV-Pro/VGC N-76. The top one for me are IP-67, the larger battery with USB-C charging, and other features. I would rather not be completely restrained to programming only through the UV-Pro phione app. I think at least one other radio with bluetooth, such as the Radtel 470X allows you to program via a bluetooth APP and by Chirp. At this point I want any future radio purchases to have at least USB charging (even if it's an older USB connector) and the ability to program via my laptop. I'm leaning toward adding full Bluetooth capabilities to the mandatory list, as well given the outstanding utility this brings. Already having purchased top-tier Motorola, Hytera and Kenwood radios I don't mind spending $160. Then again, seeing the cool things being done with the Radtels, the Tid H-3 and Quansheng K-5 (thanks to Marcus, OMOET, MOXFB Heavy Metal Horizons and Ringway Manchester) keep sme interested in the less-expensive radios as well.

Thanks, Rahn. I have been eyeballing this radio for a while. I may just get one and wait for the dev team to fix the bug. With Red down probably for the rest of winter, testing APRS in this area may be a challenge. Sometimes I can get into CHill and I would have to be over the pass to get into your digipeater.

Hello Ron! Great info in this video, as always. I've been having a problem this last week that I would like to solicit your help on. It's the DISPLAY TAB I think I need to focus on. Both my wife and I have the same 878uv radio. On my CPS, I go to comport/write to radio. When I transmit in DMR, my name, callsign come up on the [secondary] display when transmitting. Then shows [B] last call sign, [B] last group and [B] last caller] on the main display, but turning the radio off, then turning it on again, the display does NOT show my callsign, DMR number or any of my info. I have updated my CPS AND the firmware to 3.02, as well as initialize the radios. Still no info on the display. I just checked into my local DMR net tonight, no display info. In my CPS these are the settings I have in the "optional settings" display tab: optional settings/display/last caller "both". call display mode "name based". display current contact "on". Is there someplace else in the optional settings that I should look to eliminate the problem? The radios are not saving the info somehow. Never had this happen before. What am I missing? I am new to DMR although I have been an amateur radio operator for 65 years. I plan on purchasing the Anytone 878 uvii Plus in the coming weeks and am eager to join the ranks of DMR operators. This video was very helpful to me in understanding the Optional Settings of the CPS. Prior to watching your video scrolling through that section of the CPS was like reading hieroglyphics!

Thanks! I have always had “FPP” (front panel keyboard programmable) type portable radios, starting with the Motorola JT1000’s and moving to the XTS2500 and 5000. All of a sudden, Motorola decided to completely cripple the XPR7550e radio. I need DMR / P25 / Analog and only one or two VERY PRICEY radios currently exist with multiple digital protocols. So.. I ended up buying a Motorola APX8000 ($6900) for Analog and P25 and the AnyTone D878UVii ($310) for VHF/UHF DMR. The AnyTone certainly isn’t “public safety grade”, but is an excellent little radio at a phenomenal price. You can change most settings you’d ever want to change - out in the field without a cumbersome computer. The radio has an incredible amount of features. Everything from “promiscuous mode” on both timeslots to 2-tone sequential paging encode and decode. Pretty much the only signaling system missing is MDC1200. (ANI + Emergency call + subscriber control services). I sure wish AnyTone would make a similar radio with P25 / DMR / Analog + MDC + a more rugged housing. I’d easily pay double or triple the current price. Well.. Thanks again for the deep dive into the AnyTone features!

I just Updated my Anytone 878UV Plus to version 3.02n and My GPS now gets a signal within 2 minutes of turning it on. Update your radio and give it a try. I am super happy now that they have fixed it.

I have an 878UV+ manufactured in Feb of 2020 and it routinely takes 45 minutes or more to get a lock if it ever does get one. I guess the Plus means additional time waiting on GPS lock.

Hi. Thanks for your great video. I have an AT-D878UVII-Plus. Do you know where I can get a list of detailed definitions or explanations of what each of the couple dozen terms/options for the 5 programmable buttons do? The 48 page paper manual does not provide much to define those terms or the best use of each of those programable button functions. I understand that the programming of those P buttons depend on the primary uses of the radio, such as using repeaters vs. hotspot; using mostly digital vs. analogue; traveling or stationary. I hope someone can come up with the most helpful programming of these buttons for each of these use scenarios. 73

I run all the way from Idaho up in to Havre Montana I delivered to all the Walmart stores I’m having a hard time finding good frequencies for the 2 m and 70 cm in Montana. HI.... how to exclude "miss call" prompt?

I enjoyed this video. It cleared up several things for me. I have a question about the record option refered to on page 34 section 7.8 of the users manual. They mention an option to increase the total record time from 10 hours to 500 hours and the capability to record both analog and digital audio. how can I tell if my AT-D878 UVII Plus has this option, and if it does not have it how can I add the option?

I would love for you to cover the auto repeater tab on the optional settings. I would also love to know in the programming guide how you an get the offset to change the transmit automatically based on freq. Great stuff. and Thanks for the video!

Hi W7DOA Can I program the brandmeister tg's and use them on a DMR repeater not linked to brandmeister? In my area only 1 repeater near me linked to BM but I have other DMR repeaters just not linked to BM
