Amazon sells a clear drain valve that screws into the drain port on a heater. Inside this clear valve is a metal 'whip' that is actuated by a drill. It works reasonably well to stir up and remove hard water deposits at the bottom of the tank. Does it prolong the life of the heater? Maybe? Maybe not? At the end of the day, if you're paying someone to come in and flush the heater you're probably better off just leaving the heater alone. While it might extend the life of your heater, you're likely losing money vs just replacing when the heater goes bad. If you're doing the flush yourself, it might be worth it depending on how much you value your time.

If you are short do NOT buy "comfort height" toilets. They are very UN-comfortable. Nothing worse than trying to do your business while your feet are dangling. We bought our current house from folks that bragged that they replaced all the toilets with "comfort heights." We promptly replaced them all with TOTO normal heights. Our next door neighbors have giant height toilets and they placed foot stools in front of their toilets, which was cheaper than replacing them!

He's saying nit to do anything to a water heater? Tiu can save your water heater by replacing the Anode rod every 5 years. That's the one that collects all the minerals and what causes the heater to rust. That's what prolongs your water heater.

Some of the worst advice on the internet. Doesnt understand hard water, lake water or how anodes work. LOL
@weeblo54604 күн бұрын
There may be some exceptions to your Dad’s advice. We own a seasonal lake home that sits idle in the winter, our water source is a community well with extremely hard water. If I don’t flush out our water heater every spring, we get a rotten egg smell. And even with a water softener system, a lot of white sediment drains out. I turn the water back on a few times to clear out all the sediment. This is a “must do” maintenance procedure in order to keep things operating properly.

Hey, Mr Jim We have a drill well but we have an issue. Water comes out of out pipes forcefully as if spitting water out almost like it has air inside… When this happens with the toilets, it sounds like they’re about to explode and it also does it with the washing machine and dishwasher… My husband has installed an oxidation system to keep our water clean… Not sure what type of problem this is or if our we’ll is going bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated or suggestions of what to check
@TheGrumpyPlumber4 күн бұрын
@@lorasteger6205 you have a submersible well, correct? That means the pump is hanging on a pipe inside the well casing. At the bottom of the pipe, just before the pump, there is normally a check valve. That valve could be leaking slowly and draining the water out of the pipe. So when the well pump comes on, it pushes the air out first before you get water. That could be one issue to check. Have you heard of wells drying up or having the water level drop in your area? Do you have a galvanized tank or a bladder tank? I hope you have a bladder tank but they can go bad. Easy way to check…..you can grab the tank and shake/ move it. If it doesn’t move and it feels real heavy, that indicates that the bladder has ruptured. Even though the bladder tanks can be quite large, there is very little water in them. That’s why it’s easy to move. Does the oxidation system have an air vent on it? It might be releasing water. I think the problem is in the well. Check these out.

@TheGrumpyPlumber6 күн бұрын
@@stephen9851 you want to take the dishwasher hose at least 6-7” above the inlet to the garage disposal. Take a zip tie or string and tie the hose up underneath the sink. If you have a stainless steel sink, tie the hose to a clip on the sink or the base of the faucet coming through the countertop. Find a way to anchor it. I don’t know it looks like under your sink.

How do you set the flush adjustment on the side of the lifting flush part, the part with the little pin in a slot , which slot? You will get better flushing if you extend the tube up , buy the pink tube extender on bay cut it so its top is just lower than the place where the flush lever is screwed in.
@TheGrumpyPlumber6 күн бұрын
@@bestseedorchard1107 the fill valve should be adjusted so when the water in the tank shuts off, it should be 1/2” to 3/4” below the top of the overflow tube. The flush valve chain should be as tight as possible. You normally have the clip on the flush lever in the farthest hole on the far right side of the tank lever. There should be very little slack in the chain connected to the flush valve.

Isn’t it great to have him near. Grumpy? No…practical and useful. Buy cheap, buy twice is my motto. Learning how to do the basics is what saves money. With wonders of internet, it’s possible to locate the specs page on any product, see what it has to say. There are so many new designer faucets…I worry, too much glitz. Are they going to be around in five years? My idea is to take insider pictures. Each household commode, snap a picture with the lid off. Let’s see what it looks like. Now you have Photos to look through. Same with serial number plates, furnace, appliances, water heater. Grump turned my family on to washlet. Doing it in January. Not DIY, electrician and plumber both needed. Bidet Seats you can DIY, but do this with experienced installers. Case to be made for medical deduction, meeting ADA requirements, safety and functionality. We are so far behind with these things, water saving showerheads and the like. Thanks Grumpy and Son. We have a noise like someone pushing a heavy dresser across the floor or a large air compressor sound in our house at random times (sometimes goes days or weeks without hearing it, today I heard it 4 times in a few hours). It comes when there is no water running, the furnace isn't on, or anything else being used. The sound seems loudest on the main level in the living room by the garage. It is decently loud (like an air compressor in another room) and it makes a rumble vibration on the floor. It is not near our water heater, air conditioner, or furnace. It is somewhat close to the water supply turn off. I am at a loss for how to investigate a random sound that seems to have nothing running or plugged in or in use when it occurs! and since it's so random, I can't even get a recording! Is there a possible water line issue that would make noise even when no water is being used? This noise has been noticed off and on for about a year now, and I think it seems to be happening more often. Would love to get some guidance on where to start looking!!!
