I sorta like to think that it wasnt really struggling on a strength basis to hold it back, just limited by physical foot traction. Then woke up a bit more and properly "grabbed" the glacier,letting it actually use its strength. Which also explains how they could move continents, as no matter how strong on a purely physial basis, something its size would just snap bits of the ground off if it only grabed with its fingers.
