All the other commenters already said what I wanted to say, so I shouldn't even bother with commenting. So instead, let me say that it is OKAY to have a different favorite than the main character. One of the strengths in One Piece is that everyone goes rabid over different individuals, and half the time they aren't even one of the protagonists! The East Blue section that you finished here is what fans refer to as the prologue of the story. If you look at it in terms of relative length and the function it serves, you'll eventually come to realize that the parts you saw were akin to a meaningless early-game tutorial that helps to set up the world with some fun newbie quests attached. They were awesome.. but above all, those arcs just served the purpose of a) gathering a crew of protagonists, and b) introducing you to the general mindset and weirdness of the One Piece world with its devil fruits, non-binary approach to good/evil, and how it likes to do things in as silly a way as possible. In regards to the crew members, just know that they will develop throughout the story. Sometimes in big ways where they become the star of an arc, and sometimes in far subtler ways, but the things you have seen up to now is just the most bare core essentials of what makes them decide to set out to sea under the banner of an idiotic captain. They have their own dreams as much as they are helping each other accomplish those dreams; it is just that Luffy's is the most ridiculous dream of them all. Once you reach the point where the author decides to start reaping the many little worldbuilding seeds he's sown over these hundreds of chapters, you'll start finding that the story transforms into so much more than the sum of its parts. Right now, you've just seen simple stories that stand on their own merits, but you can literally see the mangaka grow as a storyteller and learn how to weave the most complicated and batshit insane world you could possibly get lost in. If it were a novel, people would not hesitate for a moment to name him along the fantasy greats like Robert Jordan, George R.R. Martin, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and so on. But because it is manga with different types of standards and expectations, and produced on a weekly release schedule to boot with far different aims and constraints than a novel which gets so much more editing, it never had the refinement nor benefit of being able to ignore the need of weekly cliffhangers, so instead it just fails to have peers that can reach its standard of longterm worldbuilding and storytelling which makes it hard to explain to people unfamiliar with it just how much they might enjoy it despite being a medium they've never touched before. Enjoy your journey, and remember: there is no shame in crying! We all do it!

Luffy isn't relatable on first impressions, like how successful people, extroverted people, and emotionally stable people usually are to the common person.... until you know more about them and until you know what made them who they are. So stay tuned 😂

I don't think Luffy was supposed to be relatable this early on. And I think because you don't know him that well because he has no thought bubbles (or rarely ever) and the rest of the crew had more of a solid backstory. The only thing you know about him was his interaction with Shanks... and that's about it, nothing before and nothing between that and when he went out to sea. Isn't that curious, yeah?. Don't worry, you have 1000 more chapters to go.

I think you're expecting Luffy to be something he's not. I mean yeah protagonists are the person we'd be following but what's unique about him is that we're following him but we actually don't know what he's thinking so you can never relate to him like how we usually envision protagonist are. There's not a single inner monologue or a thought bubble that comes out from him so expecting him to be relatable would never happen. It's understandable to want/like relatable characters though so do you. I'm just gonna say it here, he will never be relatable, only his actions. Honestly as much as people clown Luffy to be simple, he's actually one of the things people get wrong especially outside looking in. It's like a radar if a person actually read One Piece or not lol. Most of the time they just stick Naruto personality on him because that's the closest anime associated with OP that they've watch. Anyways, enjoy the journey! (*˘︶˘*).。*♡

Your friends were right, you still haven't seen anything. Everything is connected. Dialogue that seemed unimportant at the time will be brought back again. You will reread this story someday and be flabbergasted about the details that were always there. Also if you didn't know the last island they visited before going to the grandline is called Loguetown. This is a reference to the words prologue and epilogue. The town called the beginning and the end of the pirate king. Where Roger was born and died. But this also means the East Blue saga(first 100 chapters) was only a prologue(The beginning of the pirate king's story- Luffy). So yes, the story has only begun. Think of this story like an Epic. Just like: The Iliad, The Odyssey, Le Morde d'Arthur, Mahabharata, Beowulf, or Journey to the West. It's a long story with Epic proportions. I believe that when this story ends. It will still be talked about centuries from now.

Dope video man! Felt like a nice overview of things while still inserting your own opinions throughout. Personally I would love for the games to be canon to idw, but idw doesn’t have to be canon to the games. Allowing idw to build on what came before but not being beholden to the big events from the games that have yet to happen. As long as the characterization is close I think it should be fine for idw to create its own identity. It won’t confuse people if movie sonic is anything to go by.
@ashster_sunshine
@ashster_sunshine 10 күн бұрын
Thanks, man! Your support is always appreciated! :D To me, the whole thing with IDW-- as it is now-- is either canon, or MIGHT AS WELL BE canon. It's a whole topic, and it could totally be its own video, but since you brought it up, imma elaborate a bit more on my thoughts. As you implied, having the games to build on as a basis is one of IDW's biggest strengths. A lot of its impact comes from that. Unlike Archie, that had literal decades to build itself up for the big climaxes, a lot of IDW's excitement comes from seeing the same characters you already know and love go through new experiences and learning more about em. Seeing Gemerl again after so many years only hits as hard as it does because we know that's the same Gemerl from Advance 3. Seeing Eggman reveal how he sees his rivalry with Sonic only works so well because it recontextualizes any of their conflicts that happened before AND SINCE. Unless we go with a very hard "divergent timeline" sorta canonicity, all of the character returns, elaborations and recontextualizations kinda fall flat with this being a whole other continuity entirely. Eggman's whole "I could carpet bomb Sonic any day" speech could theoretically not be accurate to game Sonic in a world where IDW isn't canon. And that kinda expansion on the characters is so great imho. It works not because it's an Eggman, but because it's THE Eggman. In that sense, unlike Archie Sonic-- IDW is 100% best as a companion piece to the games. Which can be great, too! While, as I said in the video, I'd love for Sonic to have the flexibility to tell whatever story the writers wanna tell-- canon be damned-- I believe IDW fills a niche for me that I feel is very special. It's my monthly trip into the Sonic universe. And I'd certainly not be NEARLY as invested in mainline Sonic as I am if it wasn't for IDW. In a perfect world, both things could exist. We could get an Archie revival, or even something completely new to fill the niche Archie used to fill of "ultimate off-the-wall Sonic adaptation", but IDW's strengths are completely different, and I fell are just as good in their own way. I also think prime is a great example on how being forced to be canon when the work clearly wants to do its own thing can be a TERRIBLE thing. Being Hollywood blockbusters for the whole family, that only come out every few years, I believe the movies also certainly benefit from being non-canon. Time and place, basically. While I agree that logistically, dealing with new game releases during the release of a monthly comic is a pain in the ass, the writers have already said they're planning to move beyond Frontiers soon enough. And the current arcs don't feel particularly affected by that (Phantom Rider has been great!). It seems they have things figured out when it comes to that. Like I said in the video, the games rarely-- if ever-- change the status quo or reference each other's narratives too deeply. So I don't feel like being canon necessarily bottlenecks the comics' narrative from being as epic and grandiose as some of the games, if it ever wants to. We saw what it could do in Metal Virus. Moreover, I think future games only have things to gain from having IDW to support em. Even Frontiers works better if you see the Eggman who took Sage as his daughter as the same one who, not to long ago, became Mr. Tinkerer and created Belle. Sonic's more ""mature"" demeanor feels a lot more appropriate if you recognize this is the same Sonic that went through Metal Virus. Plus, the knowledge that these characters in Frontiers went through the events in the comics just feels more right to me. Especially when there's like-- no reason not to believe so. Exactly because the IDW comics have always been written as if they were canon, even now after Frontiers, there are no big plotholes or inconsistencies that make me not want to believe it's all part of the same lil world. That the Sonic in MOSTH can be the same one from Frontiers, who can be the same one from IDW, which are all the same Sonic that is being spoofed in the Twitter Takeovers, really helps things feel connected. I'd also love to see future games utilize characters and ideas introduced in IDW, which is considerably easier if they're already established characters in the same continuity. All, of course, with proper re-introductions to not alienate game-only fans. Similarly, seeing what IDW could do with the stuff introduced in Frontiers is a veeery exciting prospect! One that's likely gonna become true sooner or later.

Luffy is my favorite character, because I find him to be the most interesting. He's so simple-minded and over-the-top that you would think you know him, but he's always surprising me. I find him to be the most mysterious, and even with Oda deliberately not writing inner thoughts for Luffy (the MC at that), you can tell that this is the exact intention for Luffy's character. He represents this freedom "to be" and "to do" that I wish I had. He truly is a symbol. Welcome to the One Piece. Do continue sharing your perspective. I enjoyed hearing about it.

Great video! Great observations and great points on the story thus far. All your questions and uncertainty about Luffy will be answered in due time, so just keep and open mind and an eye out for it when it happens. The way I would describe Luffy as a character and as our protagonist is, yes he is an enigma, and he's a great friend and he's our Captain. With a lot of stories, the "protagonist" is often the character we know the most about, we hear their inner thoughts and we follow alongside them through their decision-making and thought process, that's why they're often the most relatable and self-insert type of character for the readers; we understand them the most on an internal level. What makes Luffy different though, is we barely know anything about him beyond what we can see from an outsider's perspective. What he says and what he does is all the info we get. We're more like Coby in this situation, some random guy pops out of a barrel with no resources, no crew, or any sailing knowledge, and declares he will become King of the Pirates. You'd find that he's not even a very talkative character, instead he'd be standing on the sidelines as a conversation unfolds and next thing you know he's already taking action, which makes for a very interesting and bold choice for a protagonist role. As a reader/watcher, Luffy is not our self-insert character, he is hard to relate but we put our trust in him nonetheless, he is the character that leads us onto this big adventure; our Captain of the ship, and we are a part of his crew.

Luffy doesn’t wanted to hear the story of nami’s past was not to make nami feel good she wasn’t even present at that same place to begin with but because he doesn’t need a sad Past or any reason to help his crewmates. If youre nakama he’d help you. End of story. Yes hes stupid and dumb but He’s super emotional intelligent when comes to understanding ppl’s feelings and emotions when in need. This is literally seen throughout the series. So he picks things which others can’t. Every crewmember is literally given ample time or even proper dedicated arcs where luffy “bonded” with them, get to know them and this is the reason they’re asked to joined the SHs. The goal of One piece is simply said from Chapter 1. Finding one piece and Luffy to become pirate king and in pursuit of that he needs to gather at least 10 crew members. And those crew members in return have their own own dreams to fulfil. In conquering that there they fight govt, Pirates, Solve different mysteries go on different islands which are marked by the log pose. Simple yet complicated when you paint in picture how big one piece world is.

Ohyeah, I do understand what they were going for with Luffy deciding not to hear Nami's story. It's interesting for sure, just again-- not the direction I was expecting for the character, and one that's just maybe a little bit exaggerated. I'm enjoying everyone's development so far, but remember, I'm still early on, there's still a lot I haven't seen. Keep that in mind. Just simply from the point I'm at, I'd have liked to see Luffy actively show that he listens to what the crew is saying, rather than having like-- half of his conversations end in punchlines. I'm sure he IS listening, it's just more-- subtle than I'd like, I guess. I like Luffy! It's just that-- so far-- his characterization has felt the least grounded of the crew for me, that's all. If some man want to say them as a woman, he will accept it. same for some transman too. The best thing about Luffy is he can see what his people truly want. That's why he got the best friends like Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Chopper, and everyone. Most of the MC don't know their friends desire. It is the most annoying things to see. On the other hands, Luffy truly knows what his friends want and nothing can change his mind about his friends. Luffy also know what he can do and he can't. That's why he need his friends to do the things he can't. Luffy is the best friend I wish to have in real life. He will trust you and he will protect you. Nothing can change his mind and goal. luffy is smart in a dumb way with a bit of sheer luck. he can understand how people feel but will not understand shit about simple explanation of a scientific thing. like the calm belt for him it's just a weird magic sea we can't cross by boat. but on the other side he understand the feeling of laboon to not want to give up on the one he love and trust, and that the only way to stop him from killing himself trying to destroy the red line is to give something else to wait for, but since he is still a dumbass who do not think things through he do the first thing he think of, he cannot replace his friend but he can be a rival, and showing laboon how strong he is will make him believe that he will succeed in going all the way back to him. and then he drew the flag on him because he wanted to mark their friendship for the fun of it, but by luck it make it so that laboon would not dare hurt his head anymore since he would want to protect this memento in the case something happen to him on the grand line.

Cool vid bro. One piece is a ton of fun. You definitely grasped luffys “idea” persona well. Though I think the best thing that grounds him for me is still his backstory. Whenever luffy acts the way he does it’s good to compare him to the brash kid who wasn’t strong enough to back up his words, and thus allowed someone he cared about to lose an arm. Now he’s someone strong enough to take on the world. The strength that matches his spirit.

Spiral power is willpower. It's determination. Its evolution. The most scientifically understandable and perceivable form of willpower. The urge to keep going past our limits and not let anything stop them or get in their way. But like simon learned, we need to do that responsibly otherwise that same willpower can also lead to ours and others very ruin.
