Does your TreSpade grinder have bearings for the auger shaft? If not, have you experienced much friction damage on the shaft? Tx
@GrantWynessАй бұрын
Hi, the shaft is without bearings and relies on one nylon thrust washer. If you used it heavily everyday the tinplating would wear off the shaft and rust if not treated after washing. Mine is used often and is still in good condition 👍🏻

Thanks Grant - watched all of this - appreciate the detail you provided. Im setting up a VFD for woodworking, to run a 3-phase 4hp motor for a dust extractor I made. Finding the electrical side of all this a bit daunting, but this really helps. Mostly struggling with the earthing concepts, and shielded cable concepts. My motor cable will only be 1.5-2m long but it sounds like I should go shielded. Also, good to see how you've used an enclosure for the VFD - I best follow suit as I don't trust the VFD will last otherwise with potential for wood/general dust being drawn into the VFD fan.

I love it, I just have one question why did you use 25gr of celery, I have been reading and the ratio would be 3gr per kg. would you please can explain me how do you get this numbers? thank you!
@GrantWyness5 ай бұрын
Hi Ramon, I used 25g of celery powder as an experiment to see if it would inhibit green-mould growth due to our damp English weather. The batch of chorizo in the video came out perfect in otherwise imperfect conditions. I would recommend half the celery powder amount for chorizo made in warmer climates. The celery powder does become a noticeable flavour (not unpleasant) when using 25g. Your suggestion of 3g per kilo is accurate as long as the salt levels are 2 percent and above. Celery powder is not necessary at 3 percent salt, it would just add an umami background. Celery is just a nitrate substitute which traditionally was never used. Salt does a perfect job of curing when the curing conditions are ideal. I now cold smoke all my chorizo three days after making, this also inhibits bad mould. 👍🏻

Hi Mario, the smoke temperature stays a few degrees below ambient at all times because of wind chill factor in the short delivery/outlet pipe (ie: if your outside temperature is 20 the smoke will be 16 depending on the length of the smoke delivery/outlet pipe)

Having just purchased one of these, that’s some really great information, thank you. I’m certainly going to get some casters for mine. I don’t suppose you remember the ones you went for?
@GrantWyness9 ай бұрын
Hi Andrew, I don’t remember the castors exactly, but I can point you in a good direction - www.bilgroup.co.uk/product/polyurethane-cast-iron-stem-swivel-braked-castor-35mm-100kg-load/ Go to Bil castors and look at their braked swivel castors, the ones with a fixed bolt for preference. Choose a braked castor that has a loading at or above 100kg. Polyurethane tyres with cast iron wheels on ball bearing races are the bogs dollocks. The castor can be chosen to suit your height, keeping in mind a 35mm wheel (58mm total height) will be harder to push around than a 100mm total height castor, but of course the latter may take the lathe centre height above what is comfortable to use. I have used Bil castors for years and they are by far the best value available in the UK…also check out their ‘sale’ section for bargains. Have fun 👍🏻
@andrewfitzmaurice78439 ай бұрын
Hi Grant thank you so much for taking the time to reply, it is greatly appreciated. Given I’m rather tall (6’ 4”) I was planning to higher the lathe anyway, so the castors will probably be enough. So I shall get 5 of them ordered. I certainly hope to have fun learning what to do!

Awesome how that nifty drive coupling worked out huh! lol Sweet! One piece of advice, take it or leave it. When you slide the components together you shouldn't have to lift one side or the other for the fit. If you do, make the necessary adjustments with shims so the alignment is as close as possible. It'll save your bearings from premature failure. Could be part of the cause of motor noise under the load also? Still, nice work brother!
