Invaluable info. Always back up to cloud and to a physical drive. Also save in native Procreate and a universal file format to an external drive in a drive format that can be read by Mac, Windows, or the one you most often share out. Also if developer announces new full version.

Is acrylic ink same as acrylic paint ?
@BlackletterFoundry
@BlackletterFoundry 23 күн бұрын
Great question! Acrylic paints and inks are different - paints are thicker while the inks are thinner (they flow more readily) so that they can work with tools that would otherwise get clogged using paints (like an airbrush for example - some acrylic inks are compatible with airbrushes). Hope this helps! 😃

I can’t believe as iPad evolved, it’s getting worse and harder to manage, not easier….thus I have diligently back up everything in my procreate, including pencil pressure setting, brush library, swatches, procreate files, imported images etc..a whole recovery folder in my external hard drive

I know what you mean, Anna! I was definitely disappointed with the latest releases, especially with the decision to only make the new Pencil Pro compatible with new devices. And good for you - it's fantastic that you're backing up everything! I though about including backups of the brushes and swatches but really wanted to emphasis the importance of backing up the art. I'm planning to include more info in the follow up video. Thanks so much again for your comment! Sounds like you're doing awesome at keeping up with your backups! 😃

Super helpful video, Tamer! I’ll be sharing this with my Procreate community for beginners. I lost everything when the app updated to 4.0. Another mistake I’ve made that I share with everyone is when you’re backing up, make sure the files are completely downloaded to your backup storage before closing app. Just moving them and then closing app doesn’t save them 😢 Have patience!! I’ve been using Procreate for 8 years and still learned something new from watching this - to also backup as PSD 😮 Thanks again for sharing this information!
@BlackletterFoundry
@BlackletterFoundry Ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment, Cristin and I'm so so sorry to hear that you lost everything when the app updated!! I really do feel there should be some alternative built in of the procreate art database so we have some recourse if there's a problem with the app. This could have easily happened to me too - I almost never even think about it when the app updates (and most of the time they update automatically these days which is even riskier!). Thank you so much for sharing with your community - I really hope to encourage everyone to keep their art safe as they really do become precious treasures 😃 And yes - I totally agree! A little patience goes a looong way with this - I know it's not the most fun process but a little patience now can save a ton of heartache later. And so happy that you found the PSD tip helpful, too! Yeah, I have some of those "troublemaker" files that I can't even backup anymore and PSD is the only format that still keeps the layers (also there are other apps that can open the file format - I think Affinity can open PSDs). Technically I think tiff files can also support layers but when I tested it out I just got a flattened file. Thanks so much again for your comment and, again - so, so sorry to hear that you lost your work because of an app update! Hope you've got all of your newest work safe and sound!

This is FANTASTIC! Thank you! I have lost work deleting the app before I understood I would lose it. Also when I upgraded my iPad and transferred the data Procreate took ONE WEEK to download all my art, and was unavailable to use the entire time! Ugh! PLEASE make a video on keeping the backup updated! Your videos are always so informative! My husband is also a Chem Engineer so I know I can trust your information!
@BlackletterFoundry

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your work, Barbara!! It really feels like there should be a built-in backup system so that if you delete the app or it stops working for some reason, we don't lose everything. And wow - it took an entire week to download?!? That is so crazy - it's definitely why I got more and more uneasy while I was researching and will keep advocating having separate backups that we can access much more easily. Relying on a backup of the entire device to get our art back is really rough. Thanks so much for the feedback and I'll plan for an follow up and keeping the backup updated (including brushes 😃). (Also wonderful to hear your husband is also a ChemE! 😃)

Great reminder. I did this ages ago but with art I probably wouldn’t care if I lost. None of my most recent files are done. I do stack but rarely rename. Being lazy is dangerous. As a procreate brush/stamp hoarder, I need to get back to offloading the brushes I don’t use regularly. Putting them in a folder also characterized by type makes them easy to bring back for a particular project. While you can always redownload them from purchases or find the original zip files, it doesn’t help with modified or edited groups. I have many holiday themed packs that I only use for a few weeks. No need to have them taking up space and cluttering the list. Your videos are becoming quite slick! I’m impressed.

Thanks for your kind feedback and awesome comment, Susan! Really, really great point about also backing up the brushes! 👍 I was going to include backing up brushes in this one but I really wanted to emphasize the importance backing up art. It's a great point, though, that we put work into modifying and customizing brushes and it can be super useful to back those up as well. Thanks so much for sharing - I'll definitely remember this for a follow-up video! 😃

Thanks so much for sharing, Melinda! I think the challenge is that the actual machine that used to make the paper is no longer in operation so, based on my understanding, there's no way that they can make the old version. They're reliant on the new machinery and processes (and the ownership company has also changed, I believe from Tomoegawa to Sanzen), so it's unfortunate that it seems this paper can't be made any longer.

I know what you mean - this one really hurt to make. I was so excited to finally have the newest version of the paper that I'd been hearing about, and my heart sank when I saw how much it bled while recording the video. My understanding is that it might be tough to make this again since I believe the ownership has changed and the machine/process that made the original paper is not in service. I'm always on the lookout for alternatives, though, and have been really enjoying Canson Marker paper for blackletter calligraphy fun. I'm still on the hunt for a new favorite notebook for fountain pen fun, though...
